JOI-IN BORYK, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINATION-LOCK.
Application led .Tune 8, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BonYK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Ansonia, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in locks adapted to be manually actuated wlthout the use of a key. Q
The principal obj ect of the invention 1s to provide a lock adapted to be used 1n -connection with swinging doors and the like, the lock having a plurality of bolt elements which are moved into operative position by a combined action applied to a knob and handle respectively, means being provided whereby when the bolts are entered into their keepers to prevent their return until further manipulation of the lock operating arts.
p These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and'shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a topl plan View, showing a lock made in accordance with the invention, the cover or top plate being removed.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view, showing the parts in another position from that of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view, showing certain of the operative elements.
The lock body comprises a-face or front plate 10 to which is engaged an inner rigid 'bar 11, and a rectangular casing having side walls 12 and rear wall 14, with which are also connected top and bottom plates respectively 15 and 16.
Reinforcing strips 18 are secured transversely of the side and back, the strips having inturned elements through which pass bolts 20, provided with nuts 21, other bolts 22 having nuts 23 connecting the face plate 10 with the bar 11.
A bar 25, parallel with the outer plate 10, is movable laterally within the casing and has secured atits ends and midway of its Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 238,860. i
length, a plurality of lock-bolts 26, the bolts extending through the bar 11 and face plate 10 so as to engage with the keepers (not shown). This bar 25 is normally held pressed inwardly, due to the contact of pins 28, fixed in the free ends of levers 29, the levers being pivoted upon screws 30, set in the lower casing plate 16 and moved outwardly, due to the bent fiat springs 31, which encircles the pivoted ends of the levers and are provided with inturned ends 32, engageable within corresponding recesses formed in the edge of the levers, the outer ends of the springs making contact against fixed pins 33 also set in the casing plate 16.
Another bolt 36 is arranged centrally between the inner pair of ybolts 26, and is formed with a shoulder or abutment 37, against which contacts a lever 38, pivoted on a stud 39, set within the casing and held in position by a nut 40, threaded to the upper end of the stud.
The outer end of the lever 38 is secured by a pin 41 to theV eye 42 of a rod 43 extending through the rear wall 14 of the lock casing in such manner that when it is pressed in, the bolt 36 is forced outwardly into engagement with its keeper.
A narrow raised projection is formed on the upper surface of the center bolt 36, adapted to make contact with the surface of the eccentric 62 and also to enter the recess 63 at certain times, whereby the spindle and knob are prevented from being rotated.
Aiixed uponthe bottom plate 16, at one corner of the casing, is a bracket 7 0 having a bolt 71, on which is pivoted a lever bar 72, the outer end of the lever bar being pivotally engaged with a link 7 a, by the screw 7 3, the link connecting by another screiv 7 5 with an arm 77, formed with a hub 7 8, secured upon a spindle 7 9 extending outward through the upper plate 15 and provided with an actuating handle 80, the lever 72 passing through a recess formed in the rear end ot the central lock bolt B6.
Mounted ireely on the spindle l is a ratchet Wheel 82, the teeth 102 being,` engageable by a paivl 83, pii'oted by the screw 8l to the lever '72 near its outer end, the paivl S3 having a plurality oi' teeth 85 so as to Contact at diii'erent points with teeth oi the ratchet T his pawl is normally id into operative engagement by the dei, SU, actuated by a bent flat spring 87, carried on a tiXed plate SS, the dog pivoting on a screw S9, the ratchet being,` held from rotatingl in the opposite direction by a dog` 92 pivoted upon a pin 93, set in a bess 91, termed with the guard trame 52 and held in operative position by a bent iiat spring` 95.
Secured to the loivcr side et the ratchet wheel 82 is another ratchet wheel 9S, having; cani shaped teeth 09, and toi-med in the periphery ot wheel 98 is an open slot 100, the saine occuring so as to be in register with a similar opening 101, termed in the periphery 102 ot' the ratchet wheel S2, the arrangement being` such, that when the slots 100 and 101 are in alinement with the projection 65 of the center bolt 3G, the latter can be retracted, together with the bolts 26, by action ot the universal bar 25, which, as before described, is normally pressed toward the rear of the lock casing. Thus in releas ing` the bolts troni their keeper it is necessary not only to turn the knob 5S so that the high peint ci the eccentric 62 is directed toward the rear et the casing, but also to manipulate the handle 80 so as to bring` int-o position the recesses in the ratchet Wheels to receive the projection 65 at which time the lock will be open.
ln order to unlock the lock, the knob 58 is turned so as to bring the high point of the eccentirc 62 toward the rear of the casing in order to bring` the projection 65 of the bolt 36 in alinement with the slots 100 and 101. 1f now the handle 80 is turned, it will operate the lever 72 and the paWl 83 to ro tate the ratchet Wheels and 98 for bringing the slots 100 and 101 therein in alinement with the projection 05 and Will also operate the central bolt 36 and through the intermediary ol" the universal bar 25 Will also operate the other locking bolts forreleasing` the same from their keepers, so that the door can be opened.
rlhe locking` et' the lock is effected by turning` the knob 58 in order to disengage the projection et the bolt 36 from the slots 100 and 101 'whereupon the operation of the handle lever 80 will bring the slots of the ratchet Wheels out et' alinement.
Having thus described my invention What l claim as nenT and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
ln a lock et' the character described, coinprising a casing, a knob and its spindle, an eccentric on said knob spindle, a universal bar movable laterally Within said casing and normally pressed toward the rear of the same, levers pivoted to said bar, flat springs encirclingl the ends oi said levers and stop pins against which said springs contact for normally pressing said bar inwardly, a plurality otlock bolts on said bar, a projection onithe center bolt, a ratchetvwheel on the knob spindle having 'an open slot, a second ratchet Wheel secured to the lower side ol' the first named Wheel, cam shaped teeth on said second Wheel and an open slot Vlformed in its periphery, and a lever adapted to be operated tor bringing the slots ot said ratchet Wheels in position to receive the projection of said center bolt Jr'or allowing a retraction ot said bolts by the universal bar, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
ln testimony whereof I have aiiXed my signature.
JOHN BORYK.
