Be it known that I, THEODORE ALEXANDER, of the city and county of Providence and State of 'Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tenter- Clips for Cloth- Stretching Machines; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection-with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be .afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to clips or holders employed in tentering machines for stretching and finishing woven fabrics, in which the fabric is carried by an endless chain of clips which engage the fabric at its selvage, and has for its object to eliminate the spring or springs now commonly used in such clips, and to produce a clip of this character which is extremely simple in construction and cheap to produce, while at the same time being extremely sensible and reliable ,in operation.
To these ends the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement ,of parts hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the claims, and in; describing the invention in detail reference will be made tothe'accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel and improved form of clip.

Fig. 5 is a similar view :showing the gripping jaw closed in engagement with the fabric.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents one of the links of an endless chain which carries the clips. Projecting from the forward side of the link 1 and formed integral therewith are two parallel arms 2 which carry at their outer ends a slotted plate which forms the lower jaw 3 of the clip. Pivoted in the arms 2, intermediate the link 1 and the stationary jaw 3 is a swinging frame 4 which is provided at its top with inwardly extending parallel arms 5. Loosely pivoted in the free ends of the arms 5 above the stationary jaw 3 is a movable jaw 6, which has an extension 7 upon its front face which is arranged and adapted to be engaged by suitable mechanism to open the movable aw.

Extending from the rear face of the m0vable jaw are two parallel arms 8, at the free ends of which is loosely pivoted an S-shaped controller 9. The lower end of theS-shaped controller 9 is arranged and adapted to engage the slot in the stationary jaw 3 when the movable jaw is in closed position, and the upper end of said controller is arranged to engage a stop 10 located between the arms 8, to prevent said controller from turning too far on its fulorum when the movable jaw is moved to open or closed position, as shown in Fig. 4.
The swinging frame 4 is provided upon the rear end with a stop 11 which isarranged and adapted to engage a stop 12 projecting from the forward side of the link 1, as shown in Fig. l Said swinging frame 4 is also provided upon its forward side with stops 13, which are arranged toengage stops 14 formed 011 the arms 2, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The operation of the device is as follows lVhen the fabric is placed in the machine, the swinging frame 4 is in the position shown in Fig. 4 with the stops 13 in engagement with the stops 14, and the edge or selvage of said fabric is passed into the clip beneath the upper movable jaw, and over the slot in the lower stationary jaw and under the lower end of the controller 9. Said end of the controller 9 then bears on the fabric and holds the gripping edge of the upper movable jaw out of contact with the fabric, as shown in F ig. 4. The swinging frame 4 is so constructed and pivoted as to almost counter-balance the weight of the free ends of the arms '5, and the pivoted movable aw 6, so that the controller 9 will bear lightly on the fabric. As soon as the selvage of the fabric passes from beneath the controller 9, the lower end of said controller, being new unsupported, enters the slot in the stationary jaw 3, and the movable jaw 6 is free to fall by its own weight to grip the selvage of the fabric.
As the movable jaw 6 grips the fabric, and as the cloth begins to pull. on said movable jaw, it exerts an upward pressure which is transmitted to the swinging frame 4, which turns upon its pivot until the stop 11 engages the stop 12, thereby preventing any further movement in said movable frame. It will thus be seen that further pull on the fabric will exert a downward pressure on the movable jaw, which tends to increase the grip upon the fabric, as shown in Fig. 5. j
When the stretching operation has been completed, a suitable appliance on the machine engages the projection 7 and opens the movable jaw 6 to release the fabric.
With the above construction, it will be seen that an extremely simple form of clip is produced, and one in which the use of all springs is eliminated.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A chain clip having a stationary jaw provided with a slot, a movable jaw pro vided adjacent its free end with two rearwardly extending arms, a stop between said arms, and an S-shaped controller pivoted between said arms, the lower end of said controller being arranged to engage the slot in the stationary jaw when the movable jaw is closed, and the upper end of said cont oller being arranged and adapted to engage said stop when the movable jaw is in opened and closed positions.
2. A chain clip having a slotted stationary jaw, a pivoted swinging frame, a mov able jaw pivoted in said swinging frame, and a controller pivoted to said movable jaw.
8. A chain clip having a slotted stationary jaw, a pivoted swinging frame, means for limiting the swinging movement of said frame, a movable jaw pivoted in said frame, and a controller pivoted in said movable jaw.
4. A chain clip having a slotted stationary jaw, a pivoted swinging frame, means for limiting the swinging movement of said frame in the forward direction, a movable jaw pivoted in said swinging frame and a controller pivoted in said movable jaw.
5. A chain clip having a slotted stationary jaw, a pivoted swinging frame, means for limiting the swinging movement of said frame in the rearward direction, a movable jaw pivoted in said swinging frame and a controller pivoted in said movable jaw.
6. A chain clip having two side bars carrying at their outer ends a slotted stationary jaw, a swinging frame pivoted to said bars at the rear of said stationary jaw and provided with two forwardly extending arms, a movable jaw pivoted in the free ends of said arms and a controller pivoted in the rear face of said movable jaw.
7. A chain clip having two side bars each provided with a stop, a slotted stationary jaw secured upon said side bars, a swinging frame pivoted to said side bars at the rear of said stationary jaw and provided with stops adapted to cooperate with the stops on said side bars to limit the forward movement of said frame, a movable jaw pivoted in said swinging ffli-LITQG and a controllerpivoted in the rear face of said movable jaw.
8. A chain clip comprising a link-member provided with two integral forwardly extending side bars and a stop between said side bars, a slotted stationary jaw secured upon the free ends of said side bars, a stop member upon each side bar, a swinging frame pivoted to said sidebars intermediate said link-member and said stationary jaw and provided with a stop at the rear of its pivot arranged to engage the stop upon the link-member, and stops at the front of its pivot arranged to engage the stops upon the side bars, a movable jaw pivoted in said swinging frame and a control- .ler pivoted in said movable jaw.

A chain-clip having a slotted stationary jaw, a pivoted swinging frame, a movable jaw pivoted in said swinging frame, a controller pivoted to said movable jaw, such swinging frame normally occupying a lowered position and adapted to be raised by the action of said movable jaw when said movable jaw is lowered by the action of said controller, and means for limiting such movement of said swinging frame.
