C. THOMAE.
CIGARETTE CASE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.29. I919.
Patented Dec. 23,
/N l/EN T017 KM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES THOMAE, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB TO THE TI-IOMAE COMPANY, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
CIGARETTE-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1919.
Application filed January 29, 1919. Serial No. 273,727.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES THOMAE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Attleboro, county of Bristol, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
My invention relates to cigarette cases with particular reference to a bezel therefor, my object being to produce a simplified and more convenient pocket cigarette case than anything at present available.
In the accompanying drawings Figure I is a plan view of the case in open position showing cigarette in holding compartment. Fig. II is a topplan view of the bezel. Fig. III is a sectional view of the bezel from A to B. Fig. IV is a sectional view of the same from C to D.
Like characters denote like parts in all the figures.
My device consists of two (dished cover sections 1 and 2 hinged together at the bottom and provided with a catch at the top. The inner edges of the cover sections are provided with bezels of novel and peculiar construction which are essential to form the cigarette holding compartment or compartments of the case. It will be noted that this new bezel can be applied to either or both of the cover sections, .thereby forming one or two compartments as the case may be.
The bezel is preferably made from one piece of stock and consists of the base portion 3 which conforms in shape to the outline of the cover section to which it is to be applied. The sides and bottom of this portion extend inwardly toward the center of the case for a sufficient distance to provide flanges 4 and 7 respectively which form, with the cover section, a holding compartment for the cigarettes. These flanges are elevated from the portion 1 sufficiently to provide suitable space between it and the cover section for the accommodation of the cigarettes. The side flanges 4 are spaced apart sufficiently to provide an area where convenient access to the cigarettes may be had so that they can be readily grasped by the hand and withdrawn from the compartment. The bottom flange 7 is cut away in the center thereby extending said area to aflord access to the last cigarette lying at the bottom of the case. It will be further evident from the drawings that the flanges 4 do not extend to the top of the case but stop short thereof in order to leave a space suflicient for the introduction and removal of the cigarettes therebetween. Inasmuch as the floor of the holding compartment lies at a lower level than the surface of bezel portion 3 there is provided midway of said space and at the top of said compartment an inclined riser 5 which forms a runand guide from the floor of the compartment up to the surface of said bezel portion 3, greatly facilitating the insertion and withdrawal of the cigarettes. In the bezel 3 adjacent to this riser an opening 6 is formed to permit the operation of the catch means.
It is evident that the bezel above described when applied to either cover section will form therewith a cigarette holding compartment within the case and that the cigarettes can be conveniently inserted or withdrawn there-from over the inclined riser by a simple sliding pressure of the hand applied thereto.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a cigarette case comprising two dished cover sections, hinge means; catch means; a bezel, and integral therewith an inclined riser adjacent the catch means, and extension flanges adjacent the case sides separated by a space from the cover section and the riser.
2. In a cigarette case comprising two dished cover sections provided with hinge means at the bottom and catch means at the top thereof; abezel having an opening to receive the catch means; an inclined riser adjacent thereto from the bezel toward the center of the case to meet the cover section; extensions from the bezel adjacent the case sides separated from the cover and from the riser by a space; and. another extension therefrom of variable width adjacent the case bottom separated by a space from-said cover.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 24th day of January, A. D. 1919.
CHARLES TI-IOMAE.
