To all whom it may concern: I
'Be i known that 1, JAMES S. STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pivoted Closures" for Containers or the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in container closures of that type including a curved seat located about the filling and pouring opening of the container, and a curved closure plate mounted for movement into opened orclosed position in a path concentrically related to the seat. In closures of this kind, the closure plate is in contact with the seat during its entire movement into closed-.oropened position, and in view thereof it is a difficult matter to move the closure plate into either opened or closed position.
One object of my invention is the provision of a closure of the above stated character wherein the closure plate shall be mounted for movement in a path eccentrically related to the seat so as to cause the closure plate to lift bodily out of contact with the seat. on the completion of the initial phase of its opening movement and to bodily engage the seat at the beginning of the final phase of its closing movement, whereby to renderit a comparatively easy matter to move the closure plate into opened. or closed position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a closure of the above stated character wherein the closure plate shall be mounted for movement in a path eccentrically related to the seat so as to permit the closure plate to be moved into such. frictional engagement with the seat as to effectively .seal the filling and pouring opening of the container and to prevent any acc1- dental movement of the closure plate when in'closed position.
With the above and other objects in view,
' the invention consists in the construction,
combination and arrangement of partshereinafter fully described and clalmed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the body and 2 the neck of a container. The neck 2 has its upper end formed to provide a curved seat 3' about its filling and pouring opening 3*. In opposite sides of the neck 2 are sockets 4 which are arranged eccentrically with relation to the curvature of the seat 3.
The closure for the container comprises a curved plate 5 which is provided with depending cheeks 6. The center'of curvature of the plate 5 is the same as the center of curvature of the seat 3, whereby the plate Patented nears, ieia ing 3. The checks are provided with lugs 7 which are arranged eccentrically with relation to the curvature of the plate 5 and which are seated in the sockets 4 to. pivotally connect the plate 5 to the neck 2.
As the sockets 4 are arranged eccentricallyv with relation to the curvature of the seat 3,
and as the lugs 7 are arranged eccentrically with relation to the curvature of the plate 5, the plate 5 will, while being moved into -closed or'opened position, travel in a path eccentrically related to the seat 3.
It should therefore be apparent that the plate 5 will not engage the seat 3 until it reaches the beginning of the final, phase of its closing movement, that during this phase of this movement the plate is in full abutting engagement with the seat, and that during this phase of this movement the plate is drawn adually into such frictional engagement with the seat as to efi'ectively seal the opening 3 and prevent any accidental movement of the plate with relation to the seat. It should also be apparent that when the plate 5 is fully closed osition, an outward radial pull is exert uponthe pivot lugs 7 which pull will, since the pivot lugs of its closing movement,
cannot be withdrawn from their sockets,react to maintain the plate in closed position against any accidental movement. It should further be apparent that the plate 5 will gradually leave the seat 8 during the initial phase of its opening movement and entirely leave the seat at the completion of such phase of its opening movement.
To move the plate.-5 into closed position no force beyond that needed to lift the plate '5 and cheeks 6, is required until the plate engages the seat. In view thereof, and as it does not require a considerable force to carry the plate 5 through the final phase the plate may be easily and quickly closed. To vmove the plate 5 into opened position, it is onlynecessary to apply sufficient force to overcome the frictional contact between the plate 5 and the seat 3. V In view thereof, and as the plate 5 is out of contact with the seat 3 on the completion of the initial phase of its opening movement, the plate may be easily and quickly opened.
The rear end of the plate 5 is bent downwardly as at 8 and thence upwardly to pro.- vide a finger piece 9 which is to be engaged during the opening and closing movement ofthe plate.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it should be apparent that I have provided a closure which is simple, durable and effective, which may be manufactured and sold at a comparativel low cost, which may be readily and quickly opened and closed, and which when in closed position is secured against any accidental movement and efiec tively seals the opening in the container.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a container provided with a neck having a curved seat, a closure having a curved surface forsnug engagement with said seat and adapted to move over the curved seat in" an arc eccentric thereto, thus permitting the curved surface of the closure to snugly and frictionally engage with said seat toward the last of the closing movement, and to disengage from snug and frictional contact toward the beginning of the opening movement.
2. In combination, a container having a neck provided with a discharge opening, a curved seat formed on the end of the neck about said opening, saidneck being provided in its sides with sockets located eccentrically with relation to the seat, a curved closure plate, cheeks connected to the plate, and pivot lugs carried by the cheeks and fitting in said sockets, said lugs being arranged eccentrically with relation to said plate.
3. In combination, a container provided with a discharge opening and a curved seat about said opening, and a curved closure plate-mounted for movement in a path eccentrically related to said seat so as to cause it to lift bodily out of contact with said seat on the completion of the initial phase of its opening movement and to bodily engage said seat at the beginning of the final phase of its closing movement and to slide in contact with said seat during the final phase of its closing movement.
4. In combination, a container provided with a discharge opening and a curved seat about said opening, and a curved closure plate mounted for movement in a path ec-' centrically related to said seat to cause it to lift bodilyv out of contact with said seat on the completion of the initial phase of its opening movement and to bodily engage said seat at the beginnig of the final phase of its closing movement and to cause it to be moved during the final phase of its closing movement into such frictional contact with the seat as to prevent it from having any accidental movement when in closed position.
5. In combination, a container having a neck providedwith a discharge opening, a curved seat formed onthe end of the neck about said opening, said neck being provided in its sides with bearings located eccentrically with relation to the seat, a curved closure plate, cheeks carried by the plate,
and journals carried by the cheeks and 10- cated in said bearings.
