To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. CASEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for marking the position of buttons, button holes or of both on sheet material such'as leather or cloth.
It is more particularly intended. for mark ing the location of buttons and button holes on the uppers of shoes in the process of manufacture thereof. It may be used for ,marking the location of the buttons on the button fly, or of the button holes on the button hole fly or it may be used for mark- .to provide suitable means for positioning and for changing the longitudinal spacing of the marking members on a curved line and to provide means of such a character that when the shape of the curve is changed, the spacing means may still be so operated as to simultaneously ad ust the dis tances between all or substantially all of the marking members.
To accomplish my purpose, I use a plurality of fingers each pivoted near one end to supporting means which may be a rigid frame, a plurality of carriers, a strip, or a flexible strip, each of such fingers having a marking member near its other or free end. In connection therewith, I use position determining means which may consist conveniently of a handle integral with one of the pivoted fingers or a set screw carried by the frame. " The lateral adjustment or altering the curve need not be simultaneous for all parts thereof.
I prefer to embody my idea in a device which is removable from a punching machine and I preferably make it invertible so that the button locations of the right shoe may be marked by one face and of the left shoe by the other face.
In shoe marking machines, the relative spacing between. the buttons or button holes have been made adjustable and simultaneously adjustable, but I can, with my device in its preferred form, not only change the spacing of the buttons but also the curve which they form. This curve differs for different styles of shoes and its length differs for different sizes.
For determining the shape of the curve to conform to the styles of different shoes 1 may use for supporting means a flexible or elastic strip member preferably made of metal as fully described and claimed in application execmed and filed by me of even date herewith.

Through these grooves and between the pivotal points, I pass a flexible curved strip 40 upon which the fingers will pivot. lVlien the curve of this flexible strip is changed, the marking means which include the fingers 30 and awls thus associated therewith will be moved thereby and will as ume and follow the curve of such strip.
As a means for changing the curvature of the strip member, I provide carriers t1 slidable between the top and bottom plates and each grooved at d2 so as to have two oppositely disposed bearing points one on each side of strip d0. These carriers it are each bored and threaded to receive the screw shank of a set screw each of which passes through slot in rigid strip which is part of the frame. In Figs. 9 and 10 I show a construction wherein 130 is the bottom plate and 131 the. top plate, 123 and 124 are end bars and 132 a rigid connecting bar all similar to the construction shown in 1. Each of my spacing links 9% connects a finger directly with the position determining means in a different relation therewith.
In this construction, my spacing links are pivoted on the position determining means along the bar 93 in a line at right angles to the adjusting movement thereof and near their other ends on the different fingers at points which are at different distances from the pivotal points thereof on the supporting means, that is the carriers 81.
In the construction shown in Figs. 9 and 10 the fingers are preferably pivoted on the carriers so that they will be nearly in line with the in and out movement of the set screws. In the construction, where a flexible strip serves the purpose of carriers, it is also desirable that the direction of the fingers should not be at too great an angle with the general direction of the lateral adjustment;
I prefer to embody my device in an in veitible, bodily removable frame and I prefer that the carriers, fingers, links, setscrews and all the other devicesexcept the oppositely disposed awls should be between the top and bottom of such frame. The awls should project beyond the top and bottom faces of the frame.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of supporting means, with a plurality of fingers each pivoted near one end thereon and each having a marking member near its other end, position determining means, and a plurality of spacing links which pivotally connect the fingers with the position determining means.

In a device of the character described, the combination of supporting means with a plurality of fingers each pivoted near one end on the supporting means, the pivots being in a line thereon, each finger having oppositely disposed marking means near its free end, position determining means and a plurality of spacing links which pivot-ally connect the fingers in different relations with the position determining means.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, with. a plurality of carriers arranged in a line, adjusting set screws carried by the frame for adjusting the positions of the carriers and changing the shape of the line, a plurality of fingers each pivoted near one end to a carrier and having a marking member near its other end, position determining means carried by the frame, and spacing links pivoted in different relations to the fingers and to the position determining means.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of an invertible frame, with a plurality of carriers inside thereof and laterally adjustable with reference thereto, a plurality of fingers each so pivoted near one end to a carrier as to be mova ble between the top and bottom of the frame and having near its other end oppositely disposed awls which project beyond the top and bottom of the frame, means for laterally adjusting the carriers, longitudinal position determining means, and means including links which connect the fingers with the position determining means.
6. In a device of the character described,

7.111 a shoe upper marking machine, the combination of a reversible frame, with a plurality of carriers inside thereof, a plurality of set screws each for laterally adjusting the position of a carrier with reference to the frame, a plurality of fingers each so pivoted near one end to a carrier as to be movable between the top and bottom of the frame, oppiositel Y disposed awls carried by the. free end of each linger in such manner as to project beyond the top and bottom of the frame, longitudinal position determining means,. and means, including links, which connect the fingers in difierent relations with the position determining means.
8. In a shoe upper marking machine, the combination of a frame, with a plurality of carriers separately laterally adjustable with reference thereto, a plurality of fingers each pivoted near one end to a carrier and having marking means near its free end, means for laterally adjusting the carriers and fingers at a plurality of points, longitudinal position determining means proximate the carriers at one end, and links which connect the fingers in difierent relations with the position determining means.
9. In a shoe upper marking machine, the combination of a reversible frame, with a plurality of car-iers inside thereof, a phr rality of set screws each for separately laterally adjusting the position of a carrier with reference to the frame, a plurality of,
