um-n box UNITED STATES PATENT oFnroE.
GEORGE H. MERWIN, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT.
ROLLING TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 16, 1919.
Application filed August 27, 1919. Serial No. 320,132.
vstreets and sidewalks and having a single handle by means of which it may be shoved or drawn along and guided.
The purpose of the invention is to 1mprove upon this class of toys by providing a simple and inexpensive form of bracket for the handle including a shank and spin.- dle for the wheel, and also by providing a hollow wheel that may be constructed of sheet material such as sheet tin, compressed paper or the like, and to design the latter so that it may be struck up by suitable dies to form opposite side portions with flanges that are adapted to overlap each other, and be seamed together to form the rim portion of the wheel and further to design the wheel so that it will have smooth opposite sides upon which printed advertisements of any desired character may be printed or pasted, in an attractive manner and so as to be readily read by the public.
The invention further resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts here after more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of con struction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and upon which:
Figure 1 shows a top sectional plan View of my improved toy, and
Fig. 2 shows a side view of the same with the handle broken away.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings, 3 represents the handle by means of which the toy is operated and which in practice could be formed of wood and provided with a ferrule 4 upon its lower end and into which the pointed shank 5 of the bracket 6 is supported. The bracket 6 is shaped to conform to the wheel 7 and supports it in alinement with the handle. The lower end portion of this bracket is bent in at a right angle to form a spindle 8 for the wheel which is rotatably mounted thereon.
The wheel as before stated is formed of sheet material and includes a special shaped hub portion 9 having the inwardly disposed tubular bearings 10 through which the spindle 8 of the bracket passes. The end portion 11 of this spindle is reduced to receive a washer 12 that engages the end of the hub of the wheel to hold the same in position when the end 11 is riveted down upon the face of the washer.
The two side portions of the wheel are substantially alike in construction, and each includes an annular flange 13 which fits one into the other to form a rim of double thick mess. The edge 14 of the one section may be turned, down into the annular recess 15 of the adjoining side to secure the two members together.
The tread portion of the wheel may be further provided with a flat rubber tire 16 applied in substantially the manner inclicated in the drawings and for the purpose of insuring a noiseless running toy.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a toy ofthe class described, the combination of a handle, a metal bracket one end forming a shank that'is secured to the handle and the other end bent at a right angle to form a spindle, a hollow wheel mounted upon the spindle and in alinement with the handle, and formed of sheet material having its central side portions shaped to form a hub and deflected inward to form a tubular bearing to receive the spindle and having rim portions disposed inward to.
overlap each other in a manner to form a reinforced tread portion.
