To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. KLINE citizen of the United States, residing at Thurman, Iowa, in the county of Fremont and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dish-Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of dish washing machine comprising a tank or re ceptacle having at its lower portion horizontally disposed pumping cylinders from which spray pipes extend, together with an open dish basket resting upon said cylinders, and means for operating the pump pistons of said cylinders.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of water pumping cylinders comprising parallel solid cylinders from which side spray pipes extend upwardly, and an intermediate perforated cylinder closed at its opposite ends and'having a piston therein to efi'ect an upward spray of the water therefrom.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

The numeral 10 designates the tank or restruction or configuration, preferably the shape of an ordinary wash boiler and the bottom 11 thereof is inclined toward the center and also toward one end as indicated at 12 so as to drain the contents to the outlet whichmay be controlled by any desired means, for instance the spigot 13. This tank is adapted to rest upon a stove or other heating medium or if desired may be supported upon 'a rest or stand 14 having depending legs 15 and edge flange 'or seat 16 adapted to receive the-bottomflange 17 of the tank and retain the parts in proper position. Bemova-bly seated within the tank is the pumping mechanism which in the present instance comprises a novel construction and arrangement of parts. The solid pumping cylinders 18 are similar in construction and disposed parallel to each other at each side of the tank, while inter-mediate of these solid cylinders a perforated spraying cylinder 19 is arranged,'these several arts bcingremovably supported in any esired manner, for instance by means of brackets 20 secured to the walls'of the tanklO. Each of the solid cylinders is provided between its center and outer endswith inlet valves 21 of any ordinary construction. Each of the solid cylinders 18 has" extended upward therefrom two spray pipes 22 which are connected to theop o site ends of the cylinder and extend longitudinally of the tank at the side wall thereof. This pipe is provided with any desired number of outlet apertures 23 adapted to throw the water upward and inwardly into the body of the tank. The cylinders 18 are also provided With solid pistons 24 adapted to reciprocate therein at opposite sides of the center of the length of the cylinder, and these pistons are connected to a cross head 25 by means of a connecting bolt 26 extending through a lengitu'dinal slot 27 in the side wall of thecylifider. To prevent escape of liquid this slot is covered by a movable plate 28 which travels with the cross head. The construction of the piston in each of the cylinders 18 is similar so that only one need be described.
The cylinder 19 is provided upon its upper surface with a series of perforations 29 and has disposed therein a centrally located piston 30 which is of greater longitudinal length than the pistons 24 and serves to balance and guide them. The piston 30 is connected to its driving means by means of a pivot plate 31, formed as part of cross head 25, through which securing bolts '32 extend into the piston, and these bolts also carry a plate 33 covering theslotfi l in the bottom of the piston 19 within which the connecting means travel.
Any desired means may be used for driviii? tit
ing or reciprocating these pistons, a preferable form thereof being herein shown and comprising a pitman 35 connected with the plate 31 at 36 and pivoted at its opposite end 37 to the crank wheel 38. This wheel is disposed at the lower end of the shaft 39 and passes through the end of the cylinder 19 so as to secure a bearing 40 therein and to be removable therewith. The upper end of this shaft extends through the bearing bracket 41 and is provided with a bevel gear 42 which meshes with a coiipcrating gear 43 mounted irnthe bearing 4 1- of the bracket.
The shaft 45 from the gear 4-3 is also mount-' ed in a bearing bracket Q6 and provided with an operating handle 47 as shown in Fig. 4, and bearing brackets 41 and 46 are secured to an end wall of the tank 10 by any desired means, such as bolts 48;
The dishes or other articles to be washed are introduced into the tank in any desired form of basket, for instance the removable wire construction 50 as shown. This form is provided at its ends with hand holds 51 and upon its bottom. with concave seats 52 adapted to rest upon the cylinders of the pumping mechanism. The end of the basket next to the driving mechanism is provided with a recessed portion 53 adapted to fit around these parts and protect them from contact by the basket or articles therein;
In the operation of the invention the operation of the crank arm produces a reciprocation of the pistons in the central portion of the several cylinders which produces an upward jet or spray of water from the perforated cylinder. The solid cylinders intake through the valves 21 and discharge from their opposite ends through the spray pipes 22 extending along the sides of the tank so as to effect an upward and inward spray upon the dishes or other articles within the basket and effects a thorough cleaning of the same. After the initial washing operation with hot water and soap the suds. may be withdrawn and fresh water introduced to effect a similar thorough rinsing of the dishes. After the final withdrawal of the water the dishes may be re moved from the tank or allowed to drain therein until dry. The construction and arrangements of the parts confines the pumping mechanism entirely to the bottom of the tank beneath the dish basket and permits the convenient removal of the several parts for the purpose of cleaning or their easy replacement. The arrangement of the pistons and their driving mechanism produces a simple and effective connection for pumping the water from the bottom of the tank and spraying it upon the articles to be cleansed.
While I have specifically illustrated a dcsirablc construction and configuration of the. several parts of this machine still the masses invention is not confined thereto as the novelty thereof is defined by the following claims. I
What I claim is:
1. In a dish washin -machine, a tank, parallel pumping cylin ers disposed at the lower portion thereof and provided with pistons, driving mechanism for reciprocat- -ing said pistons, and spray pipes extending upward from the opposite ends of said pumping cylinders and longitudinally therewith.
2. In a dish washing machine, a tank, parallel pumping cylinders disposed at the lower portion thereof and rovided with; pistons, dIlVlIlg mechanism or reciprocatders, and means for operating the pistons of 3 said cylinders simultaneously.
. 4. In a dish washing machine, a tank, parallel cylinders disposed at the lower portion thereof and provided with pistons therein,
spray pipes extending from the opposite ends of said cylinders, a central cylinder having a perforated upper wall and a piston disposed therein, an open basket disposed within the'tank and resting upon said cylinders, driving connections from said pistons extending through slots in the walls of said cylinders, a cross head from which said connections extend, cover plates for said slots carried b'y'said cross head, and a driving connection for said cross head.
5. In a dish washing machine, a tank, cylinders therein provided with pistons, means extending from said cylinders for spraying water upon the dishes, a cross head connecting' said pistons, a pitman pivotally connected to said cross head, a vertically disposed shaft at one end of the tank rovided at its lower end with a crank whee pivoted to said pitman, a bevel gear at the upper end of said shaft, and a coiiperating bevel gear carried by a driving shaft.
6. In a dish washing machine, a tank, parallel cylinders disposed at the lower portionthereof and providedwith pistons, a central closed cylinders, a cross head connecting the several pistons, means for reciprocating said cross head, an open basket adapted to-be perforated cylinder provided with a piston of greater length than the pistons in the named cylin ers along t 0 sides of the basket. v
7. In a dish washing machine, a. tank, a
1 series of cylinders disposed at the lower portion of said tank, means connected with said cylinders for spraying'water upon the dishes, pumping means connected with said cylinders and an open dish basket having. concave portions upon its under surface to fit upon said cylinders.
8. In a dish washing 'machine, a. tank, a series of cylinders disposed at the lower portion of said tank, means connected ,with 1 said cylinders for spraying water upon the dishes, pumping means connected with said cave portions upon its under surface to fit upon said cylinders, and a; driving mechawylinders, an open. dish basket having connism at one end of said tank connected to said pumpin mechanism by a pitman disposed beneat said cylinders.
