Description
J. N. KLEMA.
LANTERN.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 21,1919.
Patented Dem-2,1919.
J/l J mm JOSEPH N. KLEMA, OF AUSTIN, MINNESOTA.
LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.-
Application filed June 21, 1919." Serial No. 305,784.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. KLEMA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Mower and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in lanterns and has relation more particularly to a top or dome therefor; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved top or dome including means whereby the upper end portion of the globe or chimney of a lantern is effectually engaged in a manner to maintain said globe or chimney in applied position. 1
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel improved'device of this general character wherein the dome or top has arranged therein a yieldingly supported ventilator serving as a holding means for the globe or chimney of the lantern, together with means whereby the ventilator may be adjusted as desired.
. The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved lantern whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device ren-' dered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that myinvention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describev the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating a dome or topfor a lantern constructed in accordance with an embodiment of 'my invention, a globe or chimney being shown operatively engaged therewith.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section of'the structure as illustrated in Fig. 1. i
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a further embodiment of my invention, and I y Fig. 4 is a view in top plan of of the dome or top.
As particularly disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, improved dome or top comprises a cylindrical the body body portion 1 having its lower or inner marginal portion defined by an outstanding skirt 2. The skirt 2 is adapted to be engaged in a conventional manner with the upper end portion of the frame F of any desired type.
The upper portion of the body 1 is intersected by the radially disposed fiat strip or bar 3 provided at substantially the axial center of the body 1 with an opening 1 through'which is disposed an elongated shank or bolt 5. The bolt or shank extends axially of the body 1 and is provided at its lower end with a fixed head or enlargement 6.
Threaded upon the central portion of the shank or bolt 5 is a nut or stop 7 which en gages the inner or under face of the strip or bar 3 whereby the bolt or shank 5 is held against upward movement.
8 denotes a disk substantially snugly iitting within the lower portion of the boil. 1 and having its marginal portion defined by the'downwardly directed flange 9. The central portion of the disk 8 is provided with an opening 10 through which the bolt or shank 5 is loosely directed so that the disk 8 is capable of movement longitudinally of said bolt or shank 5.
The disk 8 is'also provided with an an. nular series of openings 12 partially closed by the upwardly inclined plates or Wings 14 struck from the disk 8 and whereby the openings 12 are produced.
Overlying the upper or outer end of the body 1 is a cap 15 herein disclosed as concavo convex inform and the central portion of said cap 15 is provided with an opening 16 through which the upper or outer end portion of the bolt or shank 5 is loosely directed. Threaded upon the upper or outer end portion of the bolt or shank 5 is the nut or stop 17 contacting with the outer face of the cap 15. Interposed between the cap 15 and the member or bar 3 is an eXpansible member 18 herein disclosed as a coiled spring encircling the bolt or shank 5. The member 18 constantly urges the cap 15 toward the nut or stop 17 and by movingsaid nut orstop 17 longitudinally of the bolt or shank 5, the cap 15 may be adjusted toward or from the body 1 as the occasions of practice may require.
The wall of the body 1 is provided with the openings 19 through which the products of combustion may escape and which prodgagement of the globe or chimney therewith.
The member 18 also operates to maintain the member or bar 3 in desired position be cause should said member or bar 3 expand under the influence of excessive heat, the member 18 will serve to return the member or bar 3 to normal position as it cools.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figs. 3 and t the body 1 has its upper marginal portion defined by an inwardly directed flange 20 provided at substantially diametrically opposed points by the recesses or notches 21.
Substantially midway of its length the body l is intersected by the flat member or bar 3 having disposed through the central portion thereof the elongated bolt or shank 5 The bolt or shank 5 is held'in desired position by the member or bar 3 through the instrumentality 0f the clamping nuts 22 threaded upon the bolt or shank 5 and engaging the opposite faces of the member or bar 3 By proper adjustment of the nuts 22, the bolt or shank 5 may be adjusted longitudinally as the necessities of practice ma require.
The cap 15 at substantially diametrically opposed points and adjacent its periphery is provided with the depending or inwardly directed arms 23 terminating in the outwardly directed lugs or feet 24 adapted to contact with the inner face of the flange 20. In applying the cap 15" in position the lugs or feet 24 are first passed through there cesses or notches2l and said cap 15 is then partially rotated.
The lugs or feet 24: are maintained incontact with the flange 20 through the instrumentality of an expansible member 18 in terposed between the cap 15 and the upper or outer nut 22. As herein disclosed the member 18 comprisesa coiled spring conoidal in form with its smaller enddownwardly or inwardly directed.
The disk 8 is substantially the same con struction as hereinbefore set forth relative to the disk 8 and operates in the same manner and for the same purpose as said disk 8 under the influence of the expans'ible member 11 interposed between said disk S fand the member or bar3F. i 1
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a lantern constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reasonof the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will 7 eral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in claimed.
I claim: r r 1. A'dome for a lantern comprising a tubular body, a bar extending across the interior of said body, a shank disposed through the bar at substantially the axial center ofpractice except as hereinafter the body and provided with an enlargementat its inner end portion, a disk slidably mounted upon" the shank and provided with openings, and means for constantly urging said disk toward the enlargement of the shank. A dome for a lanterncomprising a tubular body, a bar extending across the interior of said body, a shank disposed through the bar at substantially the axial center of the body and provided with an enlargement-at its inner end portion, a disk slidably mounted upon the shank and provided with openings, and means for constantly urging saiddisk toward the enlarge ment of the shank, the marginal portion of the disk being defined by a downwardly directed flange.
3. A dome for a lantern comprising a tubular body, a bar extending across .the interior of said bodyja shank -dispose'd' through the bar at substantially the axial center of the body and provided with an enlargement at its inner 'endportion, a disk slidably mounted upon the shank and provided with openings, means for constantly urging said disk toward the enlargement of the shank, a cap coacting with the outer end of the body, and an expansible member interposed between the cap and the bar.
