Description
P.. H. CARLIN.
Adjustable Chimney-Cap. NO. 132,249. uyfl. Patented Oc. 15,1872.
@Hummm UNITED STATES PATENT :OFFICE PATRICK H. CARLIN, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF ANDVGEORGE H. MCLAUGHLIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE CHIMVNEV-CAPS.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,249, dated October 15, 1872.
l To all -whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK H. GARLIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ohimney-Cap, of which the following is a specification: d
Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of my improved chimney-cap. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to produce a metallic chimney-cap or covering for the tops of chimneys in place of the blue-stone or other stone or brick caps heretofore used, and thereby to increase the strength and durability of chimneys, and reduce the possibility of their crumbling to pieces. The invention consists in the use of a metallic top having adjustable ledges to iit any thickness of walls,
. and adjustable cross-pieces to tit any position of iiues, as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents a plate of cast metal with a pendent an ge, a., around its edge. This plate, of the shape of the chimney to be covered, is slightly larger than the chimney, so that the flan ge a will embrace and fit the outer face thereof, as shown in Fig. l.
The inner portion of the plate is open to allow the smoke to escape throu ghthe iiues, and is provided with cross-pieces B B, which cover the walls between the iiues. These cross-pieces are, with their ends, fitted in grooves ou the inner edges of the perforated plate A, and can therein be adjusted more or less laterally, so as to cover the walls between the hues in whatever position they may be. The adjustment of the platesB, and their support on the plate A, may also be obtained by other means, such as by slots in B and pins on A, or otherwise. The plate A may also be divided longitudinally across its opening when there are two or more rows of ues in the chimney which are to be covered. -To the under si'de of the plate A are fastened, by means of slotted ears b b, pendent plates, which are parallel with the sideand end angesa a.. These pendent plateslap against-the inner facesof the outer chimney-walls, as shown in Fig. 1, and serve, together with the anges a .to secure the cap in placeon the chimney. The adjustability of these pendent plates C on the plate A is necessary on account of the varying thickness of the chimney-walls, which are hardly ever exactly alike.
- I proposeto'manuiacture plates A of the kind above described, or substantially like it, in varying sizes and shapes, to suit and fit the chimneys most commonlymade, so that the builders can, from an assortment of such plates, pick out those which will fit the chimneys of their houses.
The invention is applicable not only to new chimneys but to those already in use. At
present the chimney-caps are made of stone, and perforated to admit the smoke through the lues. 4Such stones are very costly, owing to the manual labor required in their formation. If made cheaper by being composed of several parts they are apt to crumble to pieces, owing to the destructibility of the cement used in joining the pieces.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The plate A, provided with the flanges a and the adjustable pendent plates C, as set forth. t
2. The adjustable plates B B, arranged within the metallic chimney-cap A, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described. 'f
PATRICK Il'. CARLIN.
