ens-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Application filed November 26, 1918. Serial No. 264,191.
' dent of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, has invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners; and he does hereby declare the 'followin to be a full, clear, and exact description t ereof.
My invention relates to as-burners.
The object of my invention is to provide a gas-burner in which the air and gas are so mixed as to produce eflicient combustion, thereby obtaining the greatest amount of heat for the minimum amount of gas burned.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanyin drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of a portion of a boiler furnace showing my improved burner applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of my improved burner; Fig. 3 is a front view; Fig. 4 is a rear view; and Fig. 5 shows a modified form of my invention.
In the-drawing, the numeral 2 designates a suitable boiler furnace with the boiler 3 erected thereon, said furnace having the firechamber 4.
In the front wall of thefurnaoe-is the o ening 5 to receive my improved burner, w ich consists of the metal box or casing 6 with the cast-iron or refractory mixingplate or end-piece 7 having the openings 8 through which the air and gas are dis clliarged and where the vcombustion takes p ace.
At the outer front end of the casing is the gas-box 9 which is connected up to the gas supply-pipe 10. A suitable valve 11 is provided for controlling the supply of gas to the-gas-box 9, and said valve is provided with the lever 12. The rod 13 is connected up to the lever 12 and to the slide-valve 14 surrounding the casing 6 and controlling the supply of air to the air-chamber 15 in said casing. By this construction the amount of air' entering the chamber 15 is proportioned to the amount of gas entering the gas-box 9, so that a proper amount of air to insure efiicient combustion is always provided, as the gas=valve cannot be moved without at the sametime operating the airvalve 14.
Connected up to the gas-box 9 are a series of pipes 16 which enter the air-chamber 15 and extend up within a short distance of the openings 8 in the mixing-plate 7, one pipe registerin with each opening. From the above it w1ll be seen that the gas and air are absolutely under the operators control, and further that although the gas and air are kept separate up to Within a few inches Of the combustion chamber, a mixture with a very fine sub-division is made.
When one or more units are not in use they are closed air-tight, so that no false air can enter the boiler and reduce the eflicienoy of the other units in use. Another advantage of this type of burner is that it burns the gas completely with very little excess of air so that the chimney dra'ft can be kept very low.
In Fig. 5, I have illustrated a modified form of m invention in which the burner is .L-shape the tile 18 being horizontally arranged so that the air and gas are delivered vertically into the boiler, causin the flame to shoot upward and play direct y on the crown-sheet and side-plates of the firingbox, this type of burner being more particularly applicable for use in connection with a boiler of the fire-box type for drilling gas or oil wells.
In this form of my burner there is the casing 19, provided with the slide-valve 20, connected up as before to a'valve in the gaspipe 21 in the same manner as previously described, so that the gas-valve and the slidevalve 20 will be operated simultaneously to give a positive and correct regulation of the gas and air. The pipes 22 extend from the gas-box 23 within the airohamber 24, and said pipes have the upwardly extending connections 25 wh1ch,register with tile 18.
In this form of my invention the mixture of gas and air receives a violently revolv ng motion in the fire-box due to the direction of the incoming mixture with relation to the boiler tubes so that the combustion is absolutely completed before the gas enters the fire-tubes.
What I claim is 1. In a gas burner, the combination of a,
the openings in the horizontal to said box.
2. In a gas burner, the combination of a suitable shell or casing, a mixing-plate at the discharge end of said casing having openings therein, a box at the front end of said casing, pipes leading from said box into .said casing adjacent to said openings in said mixing-plate and registering therewith, said casing having an air inlet adjacent said box, a slide-valve encircling said shell and controlling said' air inlet, a valve controlling the supply of gaseous fuel to said box, and connections between said valve and said slide-valve whereby said valves are operated simultaneously.
In testimony whereof I, the said CARL hand.
