To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT G. GIRARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at l Vorcester, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention has reference to improvements in furniture.

The primary object of the invention is to produce an article of furniture in the 11ature of a combined table and chairs.

A. further object of the invention is to produce an article of furniture comprising a table supported 011 elements connected to suitable standards, each of the said standards having pivotally connected thereto an arm supporting the base or bottom port on of a chair, the said arms when moved 1nward of the standard designed to permit of the seat of the chair being folded against the outer faces of the standards and the back thereof received between the supporting elements between the standards and the table top, whereby the chair members will occupy only a small space when not in use.

A. further object of the invention is to produce a combined article of furniture of this character that shall be of a simple construction, strong and durable, and thoroughly eliicient for use Where space 1s required. I

Other objects and advantages w1ll present themselves as the nature of the invention 1s better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is an elevation of an article of furniture constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 2 is a sectional View approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1, the dotted lines illustrating the arrangement of the chair members when not in use.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

My improved article of furmture 1s primarily designed for use in drug stores and other places where beverages are dispensed.

The top of the table, indicated by the numeral 5, is preferably round in plan, and disposed below the top, and spaced at equidistance one from the other are standards 6. These standards provide the legs for the table and have their lower portions widened 1 to afford enlarged bearing surfaces therefor.

and widened to provide what may be termed leaves 7. The ledges extend laterally from the standards proper and are preferabh reduced upon their outer faces at the corners thereof. The ledges may afford temporary rests for articles carried by the user of the device. On the reduced ends of the ledges 7 there arise rOd members 8 which are bent upon themselves so that the upper portions thereof are spaced farther away from each other than are the lower portions, and the said upper portions are connected together in any desired or preferred manner to the under face of the top 5.

Each of the standards 6, upon its outer end, and above its widened foot portion is formed with a socket within which is received the lower end of an angle arm 9, the

said arm being pivoted in the socket as at 10. The outer end of each of the arms 9 is reduced from the sides thereof forming what may be termed a central tongue 11, and the upper face of this tongue is arranged at an inward inclination as indicated by the numeral 12.

The seats are indicated by the numeral 18, each of the same having upon its under face a centrally arranged bracket 14 having depending spaced ears l5, and these ears are designed to receive therebetween the tongues 11 of therespective arms 9. When the seats 13 are in operative position the inner flat face of the bracket between the ears 15 receives the inclined end 12 of the tongue of the arm 9 so that the said seat is retained horizontally or parallel with respect to the table top 5. Each of the seats has a back 16. This back is of a width to freely pass through the widened upper ends of the rods 8 when the seats are swung against the arms and the arms are swung against the standards. When in such position, it will be noted that the seats occupy only a comparatively small space. The sides of the back 16 may frictionally contact with the rounded portions of the rods 8, and the said rods being constructed of metal, of course, embody a natural resiliency so that the back portions of the seats must be swung slightly upwardly to become disengaged from the said rods. The rods may have a covering of compressible material, if desired, and as indicated by the numeral 17 in the drawings. In addition to this, the ledges 7 preferably have their upper faces at the corners thereof provided with compressible button members 18 through which the'lower ends of the rods pass, and these button members serve as a rest for theside members or arms of the backs.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

In an article of furniture of the class described, a table top, equi-distantly spaced standards arranged therebelow, said standards having their base portions enlarged and their top portions formed with ledges whichextend laterally with respect to the standards proper, a curved rod on the end of each of the said ledges connecting the standards to the table top, compressible buttons at the lower ends of the rods, an angle arm pivotally secured to each of the standards adjacent to the base thereof, a chair seat pivotally connected to the outer end of each of the arms and designed to be supported thereby horizontally or in a plane parallel to that of the top when the arms are swung outward of the standard, and said chairs designed to be swung upon the arms against the outer faces of the standards when in inoperative position, a back on each of the chair bottoms adapted to be received between the rods and to frictionally engage therewith to hold the seat and arms against the standard when the chair members are in inoperative position.
