Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 20, 1919. Serial No. 298,386.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HEARsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a sash attachment for windows, whereby the sash may be raised or lowered 011 the casing without the employment of equalizing weights or the like, the device holding the sash in any desired position on the casing.
It is a further object of the invention to arrange upon a sash, compressible guide means which frictionally contact with the sides of the casing or with the plate on the sides of the casing to hold the sash either raised or lowered, or partly raised or lowered, and to prevent lateral movement of the said sash and consequent rattling thereof.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a combined sash holding device and anti-rattling means that shall be of a simple construction, readily applied to the sash, adjustable so that the same may engage with the casing or with the plate on the casing to regulate the frictional contact therebetween, and one which may be cheaply manufactured and marketed at a reasonable selling price.
Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

1 mortise a slidable shaft 10 at all of the corners thereof to provide an opening at the outer face of the vertical stiles and a corresponding opening in the horizontal stiles of the sash. In each of the pockets 11, thus provided, I arrange a metallic casing 12. Each ofthe casings is of a rectangular formation and is provided, upon its outer face with a depending portion 13 having openings therethrough through which pass securing elements 14 that enter the sides of the vertical stiles of the sash. Preferably the casing 12 has its top open, but has its sides, at its said top provided with outwardly extendlng flanges 15, and these flanges either rest directly upon the outer surfaces of the horizontal stiles or bars of the window sash or are let in said bars or stiles. The flanges are provided with openings that aline with similar openings in cap plates 16 for the casing 12, and through these alining openings pass securing elements 17. Each of the cap plates 16 is provided with an elongated opening 18, the purpose of which will presently be apparent.
Each of the casings 12 preferably has its front face open from the juncture of the extension 13 with the lower wall thereof, and the sides of the said casing are approximately centrally formed, upon their inner faces with oppositely disposed parallel grooves 20. In these grooves are guided a shaft 21 on which is secured a compressible roller 22. The roller may be constructed of any desired yieldable or compressible material having suiiicient elasticity to hold the same in a round or circular form when not in frictional contact with the sides of the casing 23 or in such contact with roughened plates 24 which are secured in the said sides of the casing.
The shafts 21 for the compressible rollers 22 extend a suitable distance beyond the sides of the openings, and the extending portions of the said shafts are received in concaved depressions 25 formed on the outer surface, at the sides, of a follower member 26. The follower has its outer face open so that the rear portion of the roller 22 is received therein, and the sides thereof are preferably provided with lugs or trunnions 27 that are received in the grooves 20. The rear and closed face of each of the follower members 26 is provided with a cup-shaped depression 28 designed to receive therein a round teat 29 formed on the head 30 of a regulating bolt or screw 31. The bolt or screw passes through a threaded opening in quently, the bolt or screw member is designed to regulate the frictional engagement of thecompressible roller 22 with the strip or plate 24 in the sides of the window casing.
"By this arrangement it will be noted that the sash-may be locked against sliding movement in thecasing or that the said sash may be moved either upward'or downward of the casing when the contacting engagement between the rollers 22 and the'roughened plates 24: is regulated to permit such movement.' The rollers are at all times designed to contact with the plates 24=sufliciently to hold the sash at any desired elevation, and if; desired, and as illustrated by the drawings, a lock nut 34, may be arranged upon the a shank of the bolt or screw "31 in contacting engagement with the partition 32, and this lock nut may be provided with radial openings to receive one or a number of pointed instruments for adjusting the said nut.
The improvement is particularly adaptable for sliding sashes of small sizes and weights, but may, of'course, be employed upon-larger and weightier sashes, and it is thought, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, the simplicity of the construction and the advantages thereof will be apparent.

1. The combination with a casing and a sash slidable therein, of hollow metallic members let in the sash at the corners thereof, said members having their outer ends open and their outer faces provided with elongated slots, guide grooves on the sides of each of said members, a compressible roller, a shaft therefor received in the grooves, a follower contacting with the shaft, lugs thereon received in said grooves, and longitudinal adjustable means contacting with said follower to regulate the frictional engagement of the roller with the window casing.
2. The combination with a casing and a sash slidable therein, of hollow metallic members let in the sash at the corners there of, said members having their outer ends open and their outer faces provided with elongated slots, guide grooves on the sides of each of said members, a compressible roller, a shaft therefor received in the grooves, a follower contacting with the shaft, lugs thereon received in said grooves, a partition in each of said hollow members having a threaded opening therethrough, a headed bolt having its shank engaging with the threads of said opening, a teat on the outer face of the head of each of said members contacting with the respective followers, each of said heads having radially disposed openings and each of said heads being arranged below the outer opening in the referred to hollow members, and a locking nut on each of said bolts.
