CIGARETTE GASEQ Specification of Letters Patent.

Application-filed. April 16, 1919. Serial 110/290,505.
To all 'u hom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, SIMON H. JorrNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residlng at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigarette- Cases; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a side view of a cigarette case constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a plan view with the cover removed, and showing a cigarette projected outward through the side of the box.
Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 an inside view of the cover detached.
Fig. 5 a plan view of the box plunger and lever with the intermediate wall removed.
Fig. 6 a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to an improvement in cigarette cases and particularly to cases which are adapted to project cigarettes therefrom, one at a time by movement of a lever, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement of parts whereby the case may be assembled with ease and the cigarettes discharged therefrom without danger of mutilation; and the invention c0nsists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a box 10 having side walls 11 and 12 and lower end wall 13. Resting upon the bottom of the box is a three-armed plunger comprising an intermediate arm 14, an outer arm 15, and an inner arm 17 formed integral and all arranged in the same plane, the outer arm 15 of which projects outward through a slot 16 formed for it in the side wall 11 which terminates short of the upper end. The inner arm 17 of the plunger is formed with a segmental hook 18 which receives the rounded end 19 of a throwing lever 20 which is pivoted in the case by providing it with a pin 21 projecting into a hole formed for it in the bottom of the case. At the upper end this throwing lever is formed with a throwing finger 22 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. Between the intermediate arm 14.- and lever 20 1s a spring 33the' tendency of which is to throw the arm 15 outward and the upper end of the lever 20 inward. Covering the plunger and throwing lever is an intermediate wall 23 which extends upward into line with the edge of the wall 11 of the box and so as to form a-narrow chamber in which the levers are arranged and above whlch the end of the throwing lever pro- ]ects. This intermediate wall has a side flange 24: and the edges of the flange and the opposite edge of the wall are formed with lugs 25 projecting into slots 26 formed for them in the side walls of the box. The box is closed by a cover 27 and has sliding connection with the boxby means of inwardly projecting pins 28 engaged with longitudinal slots 29 formed in the side walls of the box so that the cover slides on the box but is interlocked therewith. Between the intermediate wall and the inner face of the cover is a follower 30 forced upward by a spring 31, and the inner face of the cover is formed near its top with stop lugs 32 to limit the movement of the follower. To fill the box the cover is moved downward and cigarettes placed upon the follower which is moved down as successive cigarettes are inserted. When the cover is closed the follower forces the column of cigarettes upward so that one is always in line with the opening in the side of the box and stands in front of the finger 22 of the throwing plunger. An inward thrust on the arm 15 of the three arm lever turns the throwing lever 20 and forces the upper end of the lever outward and so that the finger 22 engaging with the end of the uppermost cigarette forces the cigarette out through the opening in the side of the box, the spring 33 acting to return the plunger and lever to their normal position. It may be stated that the plunger and leverare formed from' thin metal so as to occupy but very little space and so inclosed that they are not liable to become disarranged.
I claim A cigarette case comprising a box formed with walls, one of the side walls terminating short of the upper end. of the box, a three armed plunger resting on the bottom of the box, one arm of the plunger projecting outward through one side of the box, the
inner arm formed with a hook, a throwing lever pivoted in the bottom of the box in the plane of the plunger, one end of the lever formed with a rounded end to enter the said hook, the opposite end formed with 5 a throwing finger, a spring interposed bethe cover and the intermediate wall, and stops on the cover to limit the movement of the follower.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two sub- 15 scribing witnesses.
' SIMON H. JOHNSON.
