and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler- F urnaces; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. p
This invention relates to furnaces for steam, hot water or hot air as the case may be, and particularly to an arch adapted to be placed in the fire box and so disposed that access may be had to the tubes or other corresponding part of the boiler for the purpose of inspection or repair or cleaning.
It is also the purpose of the invention to associate certain air fiues therewith, whereby combustion will be supported beyond the arch.
It is also the purpose of the invention to provide an arch which may be readily removed or attached to the furnace.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 designates a steam boiler furnace of preferred construction provided with the usual fire box 2, grates 3, ash pit 4, etc.
The steam boiler furnace herein illustrated is shown as being provided with fire tubes, although obviously this construction need not be followed in carrying out my invention. Within the fire box 2 is an arch consisting of the members 5 and 6, each member preferably hinged to the side of the fire box in 'a manner substantially as shown in the drawings.
By reference to Fig. III it will be observed that the hinge bracket for each arch member is water cooled. This may be accomplished by providing a bracket consisting of pipes communicating with the water space 7 of the boiler, whereby a continuous circulation of water will pass through the metal part of the hinge and prevent undue deterioration due to heat. One form of the hinge bracket is shown in Fig. V as consisting of the fittings 8 and 8 connected to the wall of the boiler and secured together by the pipe sections 9 and 10, coupled by the coupling 11. Projecting over the top of the fitting 8 is a pintle 12, while the fitting 8 supports a disk or plate 13 provided with an outstanding pin or projection 14. The bracket is adapted to be received in a slot 15 in one of the arch sections. The slot 15 is hown as being cut in the outer edge of the section and terminates at its respective ends in recesses 16 and 17. The top of the recess 16 is provided with an opening 18 for the reception of the pintle 12, while at its upper wall, recess 17 has a pin receiving opening 19 adapted to receive the pin 1 1. Therefore when it is desired to attach the arch supporting member, the slot 15 will be slipped over the sections 9'and 10 and the pintle 12 and pin 14 will be inserted in their respective openings with a shoulder 20 resting upon a plate 13. In this manner the arch sections will be swingingly secured within the furnace and then may be rapidly swung out of operative position when desired or if occasion demands, they may be readily removed.
By reference to Fig. II it will be observed that the lower edges 21 and 22 of the sections 5 and 6 are slightly curved in an upward direction, while the upper edges are recessed at 23 and 24, to provide a flue through which the distillates and products of combustion may pass into a supplemental combustion chamber 25, the combination being assisted by the introduction of an augmented supply of oxygen from the outside atmosphere. This oxygen may be supplied from the fines 26 and 27 preferably built in the walls of the furnace setting, these flue extending downwardly and into the flues 28 and 29 within the fire box,
and having their discharge ends 30 and 31 adjacent to the arch and substantially at the entrance to the supplement combustion chamber 25, so that the incoming distillates and products of combustion will coininingle With the air and more perfect combustion Will be assisted. Of course, it is desirable that the temperature of the flowing gases, distillates, etc., be not lowered but liability of this is overcome by heating the incoming air by passing it through the fines 26 and 27 and through fiues 28 and 29, so that its temperature is raised before it i discharged to commingle With the burning gases.
By introducing this additional air at the point indicated substantially all of the carbonaceous content of the fuel Will be consumed so there will be very little smoke issuing from the stack.
36 and 37 designate additional inlets for the fiues 26 and 27 but in actual use these may be substituted entirely for the upper flues if desired.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A. furnace, an archswingingly secured Within the fire box of the furnace, said arch comprising members having longitudinal, slotted ends provided With enlarged recesses at the respective ends of the slots, tubular hinge members in the slots having heads engaging the recesses, and means for maintaining a circulation of liquid in the tubular hinge members.
2. A furnace, an arch sWingingly secured Within the fire boX of the furnace, said arch comprising members having longitudinal slotted ends provided With enlarged recesses at the respective ends of the slots, tubular hinge members in the slots having heads engaging the recesses, one of aid heads having an upwardly projecting pin to engage a corresponding opening in one of the members.
