earner nine.
OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED Mum; IBEVEL, SQUARE, AND ANGLE EINDER.
. To all whom it may concern:
'Be. it known that I, DANIEL J. CRownEY, Jr., a citizen of theUni ed States, residing at Lawrence, in the, county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Combined Miter, Bevel, Square, and Angle Finders, of which thefollowing is a specification. I
This invention provides an adjustable square which may be readily adjusted for 1 use as a miter,v bevel or angle finder and Which. when not required for immediate use maybe folded into compact form to bestored in a comparativelysmall space. I
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to 4-4 of Fig. 1- looking in the direction of the arrows.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in thefollowing description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters The square comprises a middle blade or arm land side blades or arms 2' and 3, the several blades being. longitudinally slotted,
as shown most clearly in Fig. 1. Each of the blades or arms is of similar or like formation and is provided with'a longitudinal slot to provide for the various adjustments. Ablock 4 is located at one end of the several blades or arms and the latter are pivotally connected thereto." A. screw 5 or like fastening connects the blade 1 with the block 4 and passes through the longitudinal slot of the blades or arms 2 and 3, thereby admitting of either one or both of the side blades or arms having both pivotal and slidable connection with the middle blade or arm 1. The block 4 constitutes a standard and saw guide and may be'used avariety of ways. The middle blade 1 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.
middle extension 9 and Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Application filed April 19, 1919. Serial No. 291,209.
with graduations 6 corresponding with the usual architectural scale of one-eighth of an inch to the foot, whereas each of the arms 2 and 3 is provided with a scale 7 graduated in inches a fractional part thereof. The blades may be of any length or width and.
are preferably formed from sheet steel, the
various scales being stamped therein.
A cross head 8 i slidab'ly mounted upon the middle arm 1 and .is formed with a end extensions 10, the extensions 9 and 10 projecting in opposite directions. A portionof the cross head 8 and middle extension 9 enters the longitudinal slot of thearm 1, thereby preventing any pivotal movement of the cross head and causing the same to move on the arm 1 and at all stages of adjustment to maintain a position parallel to a given position. Pins 11 project from the extensions 10 and enter the longitudinaLslots ofv the arms 2 and 3 and eflect apivotal movement of said arms when the cross head is moved on the arm 1.
A screw 12 extends through the slot of the arm 1 and passes through an opening in the extension 9 of the cross heads 8, and receives a hand nut 13. The head of the screw 12 overlaps the lower face of the arm 1 and acts jointly with the extension 9,to grip the arm 1 so as to hold the cross head 8 in the required adjusted position.
When the cross head Sis moved to the inner end of the arm 1, the side arms 2 and 3 are spread and alined, thereby forming a .T square. Movement of the cross head 8 to a position intermediate the ends of the arni 1 causes the arms 2 and 3 to assume an angle relatively to each other, the angle depending upon the position of the cross head 8. Obviously the arms 2 and 3 maybe disconnected from the pins 11 and brought to a position so as to aline with each other and with the arm 1, thereby admitting of the device being reduced to compact form for storing and carrying. The several scales provide for adjustment of the device to meet various requirements which will be determined by practice and skill in the use of the instrument.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and an rangement and combmation of parts, materials, dimenslons, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the appended claims. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An instrument'of the character specified, comprising a middle arm, a fast/B11111 at one end thereof, longitudinally slotte side arms supportedon the middle arm and having the said fastening engaging the longitudinal slots thereof to admit of ,the side arms having independent pivotal and slidable movement and meansslidable on the middle arm and having sliding engagement with the side arms'through the longitudinal slots thereof and adapted to hold the sev;
- eral arms in the required adjusted 'positions.
means for securing the cross head .to the,
middle arm-in the required position.
3. A device of the character specified,
their longitudinal slots receiving-the said. fastening, a cross head slida'bly mounted on the middle arm and having oppositely extending middle and end extensions, the middle extension having a portion engaging the longitudinal slot ofthe middle arm and the end extensions having projecting elements engaging the longitudinal slots of the side arms and means for securing the cross head to the middle arm in the required adjusted position. i
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
