To all whom t may concern.' l, f
Be it known that we, Howe-RD R. LEE and KENT R. COCHRAN, citizens of the United f States, residing in the city and county of I `larged scale, of one of the gas `Sal'vaging Device,
. a specification.
. device for San Francisco and 'State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Fire-lilXtinguisher` and Our invention relates to improvements in a combined nre extinguisher and salvaging vessels and the like wherein `a flask operates in conjunction with means for liberating gas into a collapsed container;
means ofthe .device ydisclosed in the draw-l ings forming a `part of the present speciiica` tion wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts through;
out the said specification and drawings, and
in whichyFigure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a vessel disclosing our improved device applied to several compartments thereof;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of one of the ships :compartments disclosing the. manner in which a collapsed container is detacha'bly retained within the upper portion of said compartment;
, Fig. 3 is a broken vertical sectional view of a compartment taken at right angles to Fig. 2, disclosing the operating` float;
Fig. :t is a broken sectional view on an enflasks, taken on line 1 -1 of Fig. 5 of the drawings, in the direction indicated; and r n w Fig.` 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4 of the drawinlgs, in the direction indicated. f
Referring to thedrawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a collapsible container of any suitable water and air tight fabric, normally folded and detachably retained in the upper or unoccupied portions of a ship, such as the state-rooms 2 or cargo spaces 3 of a ship or vessel 4. The container 1 is 'of which the following is t the sleeve9. A barb-17 is Patented oet.` 2e, 1919.
Appncatitn' med December 1e, 191e. 's-ilarit, 267,738.
detachabflysupported in position by means 'of flexible slats A6 Whosefends rest upon bat- `tensi' secured in any suitable manner to the upper portion, deck orceiling of a compartment, as disclosed in .'Figs. drawings; j j A" flask, 8, preferably of metal construc- 1` and 2 @if the f F N UNITED e saATns rnTENT Norarion.-\l
tionto contain a gas under pressure, such as carbondioxid, is securedlin anyj suitable lapsed container y yThe flask 8 has screw-threaded to the neck thereof a centrally apertured sleeve 9 which holds a disk 11 of copper or other soft metal manner adjacent and connected to the col- `over A,the neck of said lflask 8 to normally ref` tain the gas therein undera -`certainpressure and arranged `tov give way and thereby liberate the gas within the s j creased pressure, the 'purpose of which will hereinafter be in'Ore fully described."
The neck or entrance ofthe collapsible container 1. is secured to the sleeve 9 of the flask 8 whereby communication betwe'enl said flask" 8 saidcontaiiier l maybe established `when thedisk 11 is ruptured or punctured. y
A countershaft l2k is rotatably `mcimted within thesleeve 9 `and adjacent the central brethereof. An arm 14 is secured to the `counter shaft 12 and projects `through a pocket or recess 16 `into the central Ihore of pivotally connect` ed to the arm 14 and is arranged to puncture the disk 11 when said arm 14 is moved downward.
A lever 18, having a float 19 on the outer flask 8 under an in` end thereof, is connected to one end of the counter shaft 12, the weight of said lever 18` and flo-at 19 normally tending to retain the barb 17 away from the disk `11.
A suitable lguard '20 may be placed around the lever 18 and float 19 thereon to prevent interference with the operation of said float and lever. j j
In operation. itis intended to place col` lapsed containers 1 with their connected flasks 8 inthe upper portion of all unoccupied portions of a vessel or the like so as not to detract from or decrease valuable cargo space; j i ,s
In cases of sinking the ooding of the compartment'will operate the fioat 19 and lever 18 and puncture the disk 11 thereby releasing the compressed gas into the container 1. The increased pressure of the gas within the container 1 will bend the .slats 6,
as disclosed in( ofthe drawings, :un- 'i til one or both 'ends of said slats' 6 areremovedfrom the supporting battens 7. This will release the container into the compart` ment and permit its inflation` fromnthe gas within-the flask' v8 until said 'gas 'pressure Within the inated container is equal to the pressure of the surrounding water.
In thisv manner all containers. 'within flooded compartments will ybe inflated to 'increase thebuoyancy of the sinking vessel and thereby salvage the same, or keepl said vessel yafloat until it lcan be towed to port for repairs. v
'In case of 'fire the heaty within the corn- "partment will increase the pressure of the gas within thev flask Aand rupture or blow out the disk 11 which willalso liberate the gas 'into the container 1. If` the containerA isdestroyed "bythe -re'the carbon-'dioxid ,v gas, being heavier than air, lwill descend copies `of this patent may 'be obtained for and displace the oxygen containing atmospherey kfrom the'vcinity of thev conagration. vAs carbon-dioxid 'gas is la well known yfire-extinguishing element it is obviousy that the confiagration willbe extinguished.
- If the container 1 isnot destroyed by the fire said inflated container will fill the comv partment and tend :to smother the ame. v v3() Having thus described ourinvention what we claim as-.new and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent is- 1`. A combined fire extinguisher andvsalvaging device comprising a collapsed iniatable container; means for detachably rei `taining the collapsed container in the upper c signatures;
of ai shipscompartment; fa flask connectedto the container and containing a gasheavier thanfair andunder pressure; av disk arranged within the neck of the fiask to normallyjfretain the gas; within the flask under normal pressure and to vliberate said gas `under an lncreased internalppressure causedby a rise in temperature; and means for puncturing the disk to liberate the gas when lthe compartment is flooded.
f 2. A' combined fire extinguisher and salvaging ldevicecomprising a collapsed inflatable container; means for detachably re- I taining the collapsed container vin the upper portion of a ships compartment; a fiask .connected to the container and containing a gas heavier thanl air and under pressure;
a `diskarranged within theneck .of the.
,Y said disk; a lever connectedto the counter shaft; and a suitable float connected to the lever'tooperate saine and puncture the disk to liberate the gas when said oat is raised by water within the compartment.
In witnessV whereof we hereunto set our` HOWARD RQLEE.
five cents each,Y by' addressing `the Commissioner of Patents, Washington; ILC.
