WOJCIEGH KOWALSKI, OF BAY CITY, MIGHIG-AN.
GARBAGE-CAN.
Application filed March 13, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'oJoIEoH KowALsKI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a specification. I
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fire-proof garbage can in which the refuse may be inserted without permitting any escape of fumes or dust during the filling operation, the contents being readily removed from the can when desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garbage receptacle that is simple and easy to manufacture being in the nature of a removable coverportion serviceable for employment with diiferent cans or receptacles. With these general objects in view, the invention will be fully described in connection with the accompanying draw ing and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention partially broken away,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken upon line IIIIII of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken upon line IVIV of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line V-V of Fig. 1.
My invention broadly consists of a cover member 10 adapted for seating upon and closing a receptacle such as a metal can 11, the structure of the cover being such that refuse may be deposited in the can 11 without having an open passage to the can at any time.
The cover 11 comprises a circular plate 12 for mounting upon the upper edge or rim 13 of the can 11 while a dome-shaped casing 14 attached to the perimeter of the plate 12 depends outwardly of the can in the form of a flange 15.
A sleeve 16 centrally projects through the plate 12 and casing 14 forming a assage 17 in the sleeve through which re use is deposited into the can 11. A closure lid 18 is removably mounted upon the outer end of the sleeve 16 while handles 19 on the can 11 are serviceable in carrying the can.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Serial No. 282,365.
A slide 20 is flatly positioned upon the plate 12 slidable through a side slot 21 in the casing 14 and a slot 22 of corresponding width in the sleeve 16. A stop 23 upon the slidably mounted through a slot 27 in the side of the sleeve 16 permitting the inner beveled end 28 of the scraper to engage the upper face of the slide20. A plurality of springs 29 are mounted upon outwardly projecting arms 30 of the scraper 26 with the outer ends of the springs engaged over lugs 31 upon the inner face of the casing 14, whereby the scraper is normally resiliently maintained in contact with said slide 20.
The operation of the device will be clear from this detailed description thereof, the normal closed arrangement of the invention being herein illustrated. The lid 18 is removed and garbage or other refuse positioned in the sleeve 16 upon the slide 20. The lid 18 is then returned to its closed position upon the sleeve 16 and the. slide 20 retracted by means of its handle 25. The inner semicircular sharpened edge of the scraper 26 resiliently engaging the upper face of the plate 20 causes all of the material upon the slide to fall in to the can 11. The slide 20 is then returned to its closed position and the invention ready for use in the manner heretofore set forth. The cover 10 is closed in this manner at all times during the introduction of garbage to the can 11 thereby preventing any escape of gases or dust.
What I claim as new is 1. A cover comprising a plate, a casing mounted thereon, a sleeve projecting through said plate and casing and having a slot extending substantially half way around same, a closure slide movable transversely of the sleeve, a removable lid for one end of the sleeve and a spring pressed scaper in normal contact with the plate and passing through the sleeve slot.
2. In combination with a can, a cover therefor comprising a plate adapted for resting upon the upper edge of the can, a
dome-shaped casing carried by the perimeter of the plate having depending flange portions outwardly of the can, an entrance sleeve projecting through said plate and cover and having a slot extending substantially half way around same, alid for the outer end of the sleeve, a retractible closure slide for the sleeve adjustably mounted upon said plate below said slot and a scraper extending through the sleeve slot resiliently engaging the upper face of the plate.
3. In combination with a can, a cover therefor comprising a plate adapted for resting upon the upper edge of the can, a. dome-shaped casing carried by the perimeter of the plate having depending flange portions outwardly of the can, an entrance sleeve projecting through said plate and cover and having a slot extending substantially half way around same, a lid for the outer end of the sleeve, a retractable closure slide for the sleeve adjustably mounted upon said plate, a semicircular scraper projecting through said sleeve slot with a sharpened edge in normal contact with the upper face of the plate within the sleeve and springs tensioned between the upper outer edge of the scraper and the interior of the casing.
4. A device of the class described com prising a garbage can, a plate removably mounted thereon having a radial slot therethrough, an entrance sleeve upwardly extending through said plate and having a slot extending substantially half way around same, a closure lid for the sleeve, a closure slide for the sleeve shiftably mounted upon said plate, a limiting stop upon the slide shiftable Within said slot and a semicircular scraper extending through the sleeve slot and in normal contact with the upper face of the plate within the sleeve.
5. A device of the class described comprising a garbage can, a plate removably mounted thereon having a radial slot therethrough, an entrance sleeve upwardly extending through said plate and having a slot extending substantially half way around same, a closure lid. for the sleeve, a closure slide for the sleeve shiftably mounted upon said plate, a limiting stop upon the slide shiftable within said slot, a semicircular scraper slidably extending through the slot in said sleeve at an inclination with the lower edge of the scraper normally engaging said plate, resilient depressing means for the scraper engaglng the upper edge of the scraper and a dome member connected between the sleeve and plate extending downwardly and outwardly of the can with said resilient means engaging the inner face thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
