TOY.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MITROPHAN N. JAKU- snow, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and tate of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of an acoustical instrument in the nature of a toy, and embodying a receptacle possessing resonant qualities, and to the end of which is attached a flexible element adapted to be covered with rosin or the like, so that rubbing of the said element produces a sound similar to the cackling of a hen.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specilication like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the toy constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. l.
The instrument forming the subject matter of my invention embodies a receptacle l0 which may be constructed from suitable material possessing resonant qualities, and to one end of which is secured a flexible element 11. The element preferably extends through a restricted opening in the said end and may be secured thereto in any suitable manner, while rising from the upper edge of the receptacle is a Strand of wire or other suitable material 12 having its extremity curved as at 13 and terminating to provide a hook with which the opposite end of the flexible element 11l is engaged. The Wire 12 serves to hold the flexible element suliiciently keyed for the purpose intended, the flexible element being adapted to be covered with and `Specification of Letters Patent.

rosin or a similar substance so that by rubbing the flexible element a sound is produced similar to the cackling` of a hen. In practice, the receptacle is held in the left hand while the flexible element is gripped between the thumb and forelinger of the right hand, and by jerking or sliding the thumb and linger along the flexible element the desired noise or sound is produced. The toy may also be provided with a leather slide 14 which embraces the flexible element, and adapted to be slid along the element which it has been found produces the desired sound more plainly than can be accomplished by the thumb and linger. The device is very simple in its construction yet efficient for the purpose intended.
What is claimed is:-
l. A toy of the character described elnbodying a receptacle, a flexible element having a terminal associated with one end wall of the receptacle, means for holding the opposite terminal of the flexible element spaced from the end wall of the receptacle, and said element adapted to be covered with rosin for the purpose set forth.
2. A toy of the character described comprising a receptacle, a flexible element having one terminal associated with one end wall of the receptacle, means carried by the receptacle and secured to the opposite terminal of the flexible element to hold the latter taut, said element being adapted to be covered with rosin, and a leather slide mounted upon said element for the purpose set forth.
3. A toy of the character described comprising a receptacle, a flexible element having a terminal associated with one end wall of the receptacle, a hook-like element projecting from said end wall and having secured thereto the opposite terminal of the flexible element to hold the latter taut, and said flexible element being adapted to be covered with rosin for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
MITROPHAN N. JAKUSHOW.
