Be it known that I, WJLLIAM MACPHER- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of-Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in oil tanks, and the invention hasfor its object to The present embodiment of the invention' is shown in connection with the tank 1, having a conical cover 2, provided with a depending flange 3 engaging about the top of the tank, and the bottom of the tank has an inlet pipe 4 and a valved discharge 5. The floatmg cover consists of upper and lower disks 6 and 7, each of which is flanged inwardly as shown, and these flanges are encircled by a ring 8 which is of a width to extend from the top of the upper disk to below the bottom of the lower disk.
The disks are spaced and reinforced by a ring 9 arranged about midway between the ring 8 and the center of the cover, and to this ring 9 is secured a second ring 10 of wood or the like, the ring 9 being secured to the outer face of the ring, while the disk 6 is secured to the wooden ring by screws or the like, two of the screws at diametrically opposite points havin eyes 11 for permitting the attachment 0? cords or ropes when it is desired to remove the float.
Means is provided in connection with the improved float for sealing the space between the periphery of the float and the wall of the casing and for preventing the passage of air through the central opening 12 of the cover. This opening 12 is formed by a sleeve or tube which passes through the disks and connects the same, and the tube provides a passageway for air from the space below the cover.
A check valve 13 is,- however, provided for preventing the passage of air downwardly to the oil through the tube, the said valve having guides 14 which extend into the opening to prevent displacement of the valve. The means for sealing the space between the float and the interior of the tank is a ring or gasket 15 which, in practice, is'
of felt, formed into a roll, and the roll being formed into a continuous ring, which is secured to the upper disk at the edge thereof in such position that it will engage the interior of the tank closely enough to prevent the free passage of air, but not closely-enough to prevent the free movement of the float.
It will be noticed that this ring is secured to the top of the float, the arrangement being such that it may swing upwardly when the cover moves downwardly, but will be pressed downwardly to more tightly seal the space between the float and the tank wall when the float moves upwardly. The roll may be and preferably is a casing containing curled hair or wool, in order that there may be some resiliency of the same.
The invention in its simplest form provides a float movable freely in the tank,
guided by the wall of the tank and havingmeans for preventing the entrance of air to the oil in the tank, while at the same time permitting the passage of air from the space below the float.
I claim: 1
In combination with a tank, ofafloat fitting within the tank and adapted to rest upon the surface of the oil and to move vertically with changes in the level thereof, said float having a vertical opening and a check valve at the opening for permitt ng the free escape of gases and for, prevent ng the entrance of air to the oil, and a sealing ring at the periphery of the float secured to the float and contacting with the wall of the tank throughout the circumference of the floatto seal the space between the float and the tank.
