7 desired leverage effect.
I is depressed the leverage on they punch is increased by reason of the angular-relation ofqthe two arms-of the bell-crank and also because the pointof contact of armB with lever 30 progressively recedes from the fulis fulcrumed on a cross pin 37 extending across the hollowed out or channel upper part of the member 10, so that to some eX- tent the bell-crank lever is accommodated and received in such member.
To positively limit the downward travel of the punch and also the closing action of handle 36, element 10 is equipped with an adjustable screw stop or abutment 38 adapted to engage a boss or lug 39 cast on the under side of the transversely-curved hanshoulder 15, then the-handle 36 is pressed down from its full line position in Fig- 1 to the dottedline position, thus bringing about the descent of the punch through the medium of the'intermediate bent lever 30. This movement ofthe punch teeth 22, 22 in cooperation with theside walls of the groove of the die cuts pairs of'spaced slits 53, 53 in the opposite edges of the band ends and its fastener clip. 'At the same time these beveled or tapered lugs or teeth bend down into the groove the tongues -of'metal 54:, 54k
between the slits thus sosecurely interlocking the three parts, band ends and clip, that they can not be pulled; apart or separated'under' the strains to which the band or strap is subjected. As soonas handle 36 is released it rises as does also the punch under the lifting action of the companion springs 25 and 29. 5 45,
Within the; scope of the appendedclaims many changes and modifications ingthe structure shownand described maybeindulged in all falling within the. novel principles on i which the invention :is based and: accordinglyv it will be miderstoodnthat the invention is susceptible of fairly widely differing embodiments all incorporating the important and valuable features thereof.
I claim: 7 1. In a fastener deforming appllance of the character described, the combination of a support, a grooved die mounted thereon adapted to sup ort a plurality of superposed bodies wit the groove disposed crosswis of their lengths, a punch guided by and slidable in said support toward and from said die, and means to operate said punch, the latter having, oppositely -beveled teeth adapted to enter said die groove, the sides only of the punch co-acting with the walls of the die groove to provide parallel slits in the superposed bodies operated upon, the beveled faces of such teeth pressing the tongues of the material between said slits out of their original planes, thereby locking said bodies together by such laterally disposed 'deformed tongues, substantially as described. 2. In a fastener deforming appliance of the character described, the combination of a 7.
support, a die thereon, a punch guided by and slidable in said support toward and from said die, and means to operate said punch including a lever fulcrumed on said support and having a surface oblique to the longitudinal aXis of the lever, and a bellcrank lever fulcrumed on said support having one of its arms bearing on said surface to operate the lever, and punch, substantially as described.
3. In a fastener-deforming appliance of I the character described, the combination of a support, a die thereon, a punch guided by and slidable in saidsupport toward and from said die, andcmeanslto operate said punch, including a lever fulcrumed on said" support and haying a surfaceoblique to the longitudinal axis of the lever, and an operatmg bell-crank lever fulcrumed on said support having a shorter arm equipped with an 7 anti-friction roller bearingon said lever surfaceto operate the lever and punch, substantially as described. 4. In a fastener deforming appliance of the character described, the' combination of a support, a grooved die mounted thereon adapted to support a plurality of superposed bodies with the groove disposed crosswise'of their lengths, a punchguidedlby and slid'able in said supporttoward and from said die, the
' punch having oppositely-beveled teeth adapted to enter said die; groove, the sides only of-the punch teeth co-acting with the walls of the dieigroove to 'provide parallel V slits in'thesuperposed bodiesoperatedupon, 'thebeveledfaces of gSllCh teeth pres'singthe tongues of material between such slits out of vtheir ,Original planes thereby lockingsaid bodies together by such -"laterally-disposed deformedtongues, and means to operate said punch including. aleverfulcrumed on said support and having a surfaceoblique to the longitudinal axis of the lever,,and an operating bell-crank lever fulcrumed on said support having one of its arms bearing on said surface to operate the lever and punch, substantially as described.
5. In a fastener deforming appliance of the character described, the combination of a support, a grooved die mounted thereon adapted to support a plurality of superposed bodies with the groove disposed crosswise of their lengths, a punch guided by and slidable in said support toward and from said die, the punch having oppositely beveled teeth adapted to enter said die groove, the sides only of the punch teeth co-acting with the walls of the die groove to provide parallel slits in the superposed bodies operated upon, the beveled faces of such teeth pressing the tongues of material between such slits out of their original planes, thereby locking said bodies together by such laterallydisposed deformed tongues, and means to operate such punch including a lever fulcrumed on said support and having a surface oblique to the longitudinal axis of the lever, and a hookshaped operating bell-crank lever fulcrumed on such support having one of its arms shorter than the other and equipped with an anti-friction roller bearing on said lever surface to operate the lever and punch, said 0perating-lever being shaped to receive between its two arms the part of the lever having the oblique surface, substantially as described.
