UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE SIMON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIG-NOR 'I'O FIRE TOP MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A GOPARTNERSHIP.
LUMINOUS SPINNING-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Application filed April 28, 1919. Serial No. 293,350.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE SIMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Luminous Spinning-Top, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to improvements in toy spinning-tops and consists in the novel design and construction hereinafter disclosed.
An object of my invention is to provide a toy spinning-top of such a character as will glow luminously when spun in a properly darkened room or elsewhere, and thus tend to constitute a form of entertainment.
I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the device taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the luminous spinning-top is shown to comprise a spindle 1 and an annular disk 2 mounted concentrically on said spindle 1 and formed preferably integral therewith, the entire device being formed Or molded from a transparent rigid material, preferably glass or celluloid. The portion of said spindle below the disk develops or tapers substantially to a blunt point 3 upon which the device is spun. The portion above the disk constitutes the stem 4 by which the top is supported between the thumb and finger and actuated.
A preferably circular pocket or recess 5 is formed in the under face of said annular disk 2 substantially at the periphery thereof. A layer or coat 6 of self-luminous material, preferably of a radium composition in the form of a paint or paste, is disposed within said pocket or recess 5 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. The open construction indicated tends to facilitate the application of the said self-luminous "material with a brush or any other suitable instrument.
In practice, the device is supported by the stem 4 between the thumb and finger and given a sudden twirl thereby, thus causing the luminous top to spin upon a suitable fiat surface in the usual manner. The device is primarily adapted to be operated in a substantially darkened room or other place from which light is absent, the self-luminous material disposed therein emitting a luminous glow clearly visible through the transparent disk and having substantially the appearance of a luminous circular spot. Upon operation, the rapid spinning motion or action of the top tends to transform the luminous top into a continuous luminous ring, which result constitutes the entertaining feature of the invention.
I am aware that various changes may be made in the design and structure of the device without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I do not limit myself therefore, to the exact detail shown and described, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a
luminous spinning-top comprising a spindle, a transparent disk mounted concentrlcally on said spindle, a pocket or recess formed in said disk, and self-luminous material disperiphery thereof.
MAURICE SIMON.
