I Application filed June 20, 1917. .Srial No. 175,830.
To all whom it may concern 3 Be it known that I, PAUL M. HOTCHKIN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lighting-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto those lighting fix tures, which are termed indirect, but 1n' which the ornamental appearance of the fixture is increased by surrounding the reflector with a glass bowl and then reflecting some of the direct light rays on to said bowl, thereby imparting a desirable luminosity to it, and removing the frequently heard objection that the source of light is unseen, and yet having it so screened as to avoid the extremely deleterious action of direct light upon the eyes. c
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more'readily understood by having reference to the accompanyin drawings, which are hereunto annexed an are a part of this specification, in which:
The figure is a vertical sectional view of a fixture constructed in accordance with my improvement.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
The drawing shows my improvement applied to a lighting fixture which is suspended from'the ceiling. The fixture is provided with the usual canopy 6 from which depend a plurality of chains 5- which support at their lower ends a fixture body 2, which, as shown in the drawing, is an ornamental ring. Inside of this ring is mounted an annular member' which is preferably formed of metal, although any other suitable material can be employed. The upper portion of this annular member 3 flares upwardly and outwardly, the lower portion beingv bent at an angle to the upper portlon-and is flared downwardly and outwardly. The lower surface of this downwardly and outwardly flaring portion is preferably enameled white, forming a reflecting surface. 1 A plurality of arms 7 formed of metal, are spotaveldecl' to the annular member 3 and extend inwardly and downwardly therefrom, forming a support for a reflector S, which is designed to receive the hght flux from an electric light bulb 9 and direct the light rays upwardly outwardly will, however, strike the reflect lng portion of the annular member 3 and be redirected downwardly causing an illumination of a glass bowl l which is suitably supported by the fixture body 2.
The result of this construction is at once apparent. flector 8, all the desirable results of a total indirect fixture, while the white enameled metal surface of the ring will reflect a sufficient number of lumens to impart a pleas ing amount of illumination to the bowl l, thus serving to bring out its ornamentation, and greatly adding to the beauty of the fixture. If desired the outer surface of the reflector 8 can be coated with aluminum, as
Therfixture has, due to the re specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 14, 1919. I
body, an annular member mounted inside the fixture body the upper portion of which flares upwardly and outwardly, the lower portion being bent at an angle thereto and flaring downwardly and outwardly, the lower surface of the downwardly and outsurface which reflects the light rays clownwardly, a reflector which directs the light member to support said reflector.
2. A. lighting fixturecomprising the combination with a source of light of a'fixture body, an annular member mounted lnside the fixture-body the upper portion of which flares upwardly and outwardly, the lower as V wardly flaring portion forming a reflecting portion being bent at an angle thereto and mounted inside of the glass bowl but in spaced relation thereto, means carried by said annular member to support said re 10 fiector, and means to support said fixture body. I
In testimony whereof, I have signed the foregoing specification.
PAUL M. HOTCHKIN.
