Description

D, H. HEINDEL. ELEVATOR.
APPLICATIONHLED AuG.9,191. A
1,318,556. Patented. 0@t.14,1919.
, STATES DAvID H. IiEINDEL, or HUNTINGTON, INDIANA.
ELEVATOR. Y
To all whom t may Concern:
f Be it known that I, DAviDI-IL HEINDEL',
a citizen of United States, residing at Hunt-g `vington, in theV county of Huntington, State: A of Indiana', have invented'certain'new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and I dol hereby declare the following to bea full,
clear, and exactfdescription of the. inven? tion, such as vvillenable'others skilled in the art to which Vit appertains tomake and use the saine. i' Y. Y* The invention'relates tozan elevator and more particularly to the class of manually o erated lifts for use in buildings or the li ze.
the provision of an elevator or lift of this character, wherein the occupant of the caijrier thereof can manuallyoperate ,the same for the automatic raising and lowering'of the carrier, the mechanismfor vthe raising and lowering of the carrier being ofr'novel` form so that there is no possibility of the sudden dropping of the carrier when inraised position.
, Another object of the invention is the.
tendant or occupant when it is desired tol ascend or descend in the elevator or'lift.
A further object'of the invention is the provision of an elevator or lift ofthis char acter which is' eXtremely Vsimple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
and install.
` Withthese and other objects in view, the
k'invention consists in the features `of construction, combination and arrangement of parts `as will be hereinafter .fully described,
illustrated inV the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto ap-L pended.
In' the accompanying drawing: n Figure 1, is a fragmentary elevation of an elevator or lift constructed in accordancev with the invention. V: V v
Fig. 2, is a sectional view onthe line 2 2 ofrFig. 1, looking in the direction kof the arrow.
The primary object of the invention` isV `presently described.
' j spieeficashoftmalsmais!v Patented oct. ,14, 1919. applicati@ filed August 9,1918. Y'serial No'. 2,491,095. f f- F ig.l 6, is a sectiona'lviewfonthe line 6 6 of Fig. 1. 1
responding :parts Vthroughout the several viewsin thedrawing. f. :Referring to the drawing in-detail,- A. designates generally Vthe elevator or Ylift `guidefralnejwhich comprises spaced vertical. guides 10 formed in theirouter sides with weight channels 11 for movement of the,V balancing weights 12 carriedat the freeVA endsof weight cables 13 whichare trained over and travelupon guide, pulleys 141 jour-y naled in the 'upper ends of the vertical guides 10,-the opposite endsof the cablesfl Vbeii'ig-suitably fixed to the top of the carrier or lift Bproper, vertically'slidable in the guide frame A 'and` constructed in a manner The carrier or lift B proper, comprises a. platform 15, having upstanding therefrom kthe sideA posts 16 which support a cross piece or head 17, to which are fastened the cables 13, the posts 16 being verticallyY channeled for receiving the tracks 18 of the Similar-reference. characters indicate corvertical guides l0 of the guide frame A in which travels the carrier or lift B, proper. Y Mounted on one post 16 of the carrier or lift B proper, isV a substantially U-shaped bracket 19 having arranged therein a power pulley 20, journaled upon a stud axle 21, mountedin the-bracket 19 and the adjacent post 16 of the lift or carrier B, the pulley 2O being formed with a belt wheel 22 over which'is trained an endless belt 23, the same being also trained over a Ibelt driving wheel 24, which is iXed-to aV crank shaft 25 journaled in the bracket 19 and adjacent post 16 of the carrier orliftlBpropenthe shaft 25 lbeing formed with a crank handle 26 for manual operation.
Trained about the driving pulley 20 is a cable 27 which has one end liXed to the base of they frame 'A and its opposite end fixed to a hook-like fastener 28 mounted in the head of said'guide frame A, the stretch of the cable 27 being in vertical alinement with the Y pulley 2O so that on rotation ofthe lever the coil of the cable 27 will be fed about the pulley 20 when rotated, thereby causing the pulley to travel upon the cable 27 and thus raise or lower the carrier or lift B prop er, in the guide frame A, as will beV apparent; The belt drive Wheel 24 is formed with a brake Wheel 29 about Which is trained a brake band 30, the opposite ends of which are loosely connected through the medium of the links 31 with a brake operating arm 32 on opposite sides of its swinging axis, the arm 32being supported .to swing upon a pivot 33 fixed in a hanger 34 mounted on the carrier orlift B proper. Connected to the arm 32 remote from the point of connection of the-brake band therewith, is a coiled retractile spring 35 which is also connected to the head of the carrier or lift B, andthe function or office of this spring 35 is to normally hold the brake band 30 in frictional, binding or braking position upon the brake Wheel 29, and thereby retarding the movement or holding the lift or carrier B proper against movement. On exerting pressure upon the arm 32 against the resistance of the spring 35, the brake is released so that the carrier or liftB proper, can be raised or lowered by manually operating the hand crank 30hy an occupa-nt or attendant upon the carrier or lift B proper. When pressure is re- Copies of this patent may be obtained for lmannerV of use and construction of the invention will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
W'hat is claimed is: In an elevator, the combination with guide frame, a cable attached to its head and base, a lift movable in the frame, and a pulley Wheel carried by the lift and around r Which the cable makes a coil; of a crank shaft mounted in the lift, wheels on this shaft and on the shaft of said pulley, a belt connecting the Wheels, a brake drum fast on the crank shaft, a band brake around the drum, a pivoted lever controlling the action of'said band, and a spring normally moving thelever to apply such band to the drum.
In testimonv whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
