HAMMEIbFASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented that. "2, 1919.
Application filed April 13, 1917. Serial No. 161,812.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YVILLIAM A. JOHNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invent-ed a new and useful Hammer-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
T he subject of this invention is a fastener for securing the head of a hammer or other tool to its handle.
The main object of the invention is to provide means secured to the handle and contacting the head for securing the two together.
Another object is to provide a wedge which may be driven into the handle and engage the head.
Another object is to provide a maximum of binding surface on the wedge.
Another object is to provide a wedge which may be driven into the handle of a hammer and which will contact the head of the hammer, and means for locking the wedge in place.
Still another object is to provide means for removing the locking device.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
One practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an end elevation of a hammer head, showing the locking wedge partially removed.
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the fastener in place.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the main head contacting wedge.- the locking wedge beihg shown in section.
F ig. 4 is a view in elevation of the locking wedge with the main wedge shown in section.
This application discloses a tool comprising a head 2 having an eye 25. the head having oppositely disposed recesses 3 opening laterally into the eye, and a handle 1 in the eye.
A first wedge o is mounted in the handle 1 and is provided at its outer end with an undercut open slot 6, the edges 26 of the wedge converging, the sides of the wedge being parallel, as indicated at 27, throughout the major portion of the length of the wedge and converging at the inner end of the wedge as shown at 28 to form a cutting edge 29. The sides is wedge 5 are supplied with longitudinal. ...rugations 7 terminated at 36 short of the outer end of the wedge, the wedge being supplied at its outer ends with laterally extended lugs 4 received in the recesses 33 of the head 2 and having converging edges 31. A second wedge 8 is mounted in the handle transversely oi the first wedge 5, the second wedge being provided at its inner end with a notch having parallel sides 32 coacting with the parallel portions 27 of the sides of the first wedge 5, the slot defining a head 11 received in the undercut slot 6 of the first wedge, the cutting edge of the first wedge terminating in approximate alinement with the inner end of the second wedge 8. The sides of the second wedge have longitudinal corrugations 10, terminated at 34 short of the outer end of the second wedge, the edges 33 of said wedge converging. The wedge 8 is provided at its outer end with lateral projections 35 seated in the handle, the edges 36 of the projections converging inwardly and downwardly. The second wedge 8 is provided on one side with prize-tool seats i2.v
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tool comprising ahead having an eye and oppositely disposed recesses opening into the eye; a handle in the eye; a first wedge in the handle and provided at its outer end with an open undercut slot, the edges of the wedge converging, the sides thereof being parallel throughout the major portion of their length and converging at the inner end of the wedge to form a cutting edge, the sides being supplied with longitudinal corrugations terminated short of the outer end of the wedge, the wedge being supplied at its outer end with lateral lugs received in the recesses and having inwardly 105 first wedge, she notch defining a head received in the slot of the first, wedge, the cut ting edge tenninating in approximate alimement with the inner eiid. of the second Wedge, the edge; of the second Wedge 'conYerging, the sides thereof having longitudinal corrugations terminated short 0f the outer end of the second Wedge the said Wedge being pro vided at its outer end with lateral pr0jections seated in the handle and having in- WILLIAM A.
