Be it known that I, LAWRENCE M. ENDRES,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cross Plains, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Rests,
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clearyand eXact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for sharpening the disks of cultivators and harrows, and particularly in the means for supporting the grinder or the like during this operation.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a tool rest of simple design which can be readily associated with practically any type of disk harrow or cultivator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool rest, the several parts of which may be very easily adjusted with respect to each other and held in their several positions when properly arranged. As a result of this construction any one or all of a series of disks'may be sharpened with equal facility.
With these general objects in view the invention-consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown, although it is obvious that various changes may be made in the form or proportionof the severalparts in the device without departing from the principles of the invention:
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved tool rest associated with a portion of a harrow.
In the present instance the disks 1 which are to be sharpened are carried by a revoluble shaft 2 of the harrow, a portion of the frame of which is shown at 3, the shaft being journally carried by the yoke 4: thereof. When the disks 1 are to be ground or sharpened the shaft 2 is blocked up by means of blocks 5, or in any other preferred manner, so that the former will be raised above the ground. The shaft 2 and the disks 1 may thereupon be readily rotated either by hand or by power through a drive shaft 6.
As a matter of convenience in illustration the grinder for sharpening the disks has not been shown, but it is designed'to be mounted upon a substantially horizontal tool rest bar 7 which is" normally positioned approXimately parallel to the shaft 2 and is supported upon a pair of spaced inclined bars 8. One end of each of these bars 8 is provided with a hooked retaining finger 9 adapted to rest upon'the housing 2ofthe shaft 2; opposite ends of the bars 8 rest upon the ground. r
The bars 7 and 8 are retained in assembled relation by means of couplings 10 which i are free to slide on the bars 8 and permit a similar movement of the bars therethrough. The opposite ends of the bars 7 and the lower ends of the bars 8 are provided with caps 11 and 12 respectively. This arrangement permits the bars 8 to be moved toward and away from each other and the bar 7 shifted both longitudinally and transversely thereof; this obviously permits the fingers 9 to be engaged between any of the several parts of disks 1 and the bar 7 arranged either adjacent to or at a distance from the shaft 2, the caps preventing the excessive movement of the bars with respect to each other and also retaining them in their associated relation.
The portions of the couplings 10 which slidably receive the bar 7 are cut away at 10 so that the latter will rest directly upon the bars 8 and thereby have a frictional contact therewith. This engagement together with the inclination of the bars 8 and the weight of the sharpening device on the bar 7 easily holds the latter in any one of its several adjusted positions. From this description it will be seen that a very simply constructed tool mount has been produced which may be readily used in connection with various forms of machinery having rotary parts which it is necessary to sharpen.
I claim:
1. A tool mount of the class described com- 100 and transversely with respect thereto, and a 105 coupling slidably disposed on each of said supporting bars and slidably recelvmg the tool rest bar to retain the latter in frictional engagement with the former.
2. A tool mount of the class described com- 110 prising a pair of supporting bars adjustable toward and away from each other, a
tool rest bar disposed transversely of said supporting bars and adjustable longitudinally and transversely with respect thereto, a coupling slidably disposed on each of said supporting bars and slidably receiving the tool rest bar to retain the latter in frictional engagement with the former, and a stop on each end of the bars for cooperative engagement with said couplings to limit the movement of the bars with respect to each other.
3. The combination with a rotary diskcarrying shaft of a cultivator or harrow and a disk disposed thereon, of a disk sharpener mount comprising a pair of normally spaced supporting bars, attaching means on the corresponding end of each of the bars for engagement with said shaft, the opposite end of the bars resting on the ground or the like, and a sharpener rest bar disposed across said supporting bars and slidable longitudinally and transversely on the latter.
4. The combination with a rotary diskcarrying shaft of a cultivator 0r harrow and a disk disposed thereon, of a disk sharpener mount comprising a supporting bar, attaching means on one end of the bar for engagement with said shaft, the opposite end of the bar resting on the ground or the like, a coupling slidable longitudinally on said bar, and a sharpener rest bar disposed across said supporting bar and slidable longitudinally in said coupling, said rest bar thereby being slidable longitudinally and transversely of the supporting bar.
