Serienumnatfll, a citizen ot' the United States', residing at Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio. have invented an Improvement in Milling-lliachines, of which the following description, in connection with the acrompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention hereinafter described relates to milling machines and other machine tools,
Machines of this type usually comprise a standard supporting a knee, saddle and table. The knee may be fed vertically along the standard, and the saddle and table may he fed transversely to one another on the knee. l
(.)ne of the objects of the invention is to provide improved speedchange mechanism mounted in the knee for feeding the knee, saddle or table. or any of them, at. different speeds appropriate for operation 0f the tool 011 the work.
Another object of the invention is to provide means including a rotor on the standard for imparting a rapid traverse to the knee, saddle and table, or any of them, to carry the. work quickly to different. positions according to conditions as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide sim )le and effective mechanism for transmittmp: the drive to the feeding mechanism in the knee from work feed and rapid traverse rotors on the standard, without requiring the usual flexible, extensible shaft between the standard and knee.
Another object of the invention 4is to provide simple and effective means including a control carried by the knee whereby the work feed and rapid traverse rotors on the standard may alternatively be rendered effective to feed the work support., and the direction of feed thereof may be determined.
Still another object of the invention is to provide improved mechanism for controlling` the starting and stopping of the various feeds and the rapid traverse.

Fig. 16 on an enlarged scale is a vertical section through the guard for the handle .for controlling Vthe Work feed, the rapid shown therein as embodying the invention comprises a standard 1 (Fig. 1) having upri 'lits 3 thereon provided with bearings 1n wiich is journaled the usual tool actuating spindle An arm 7 ma \v be secured in said uprights adjacent the upper ends thereof and project forwardly from said standard to provide an outboard bearing for said spindle. A work feed rotor, in the present instance, in the form of cone iulley 9 may be mounted on said spindle an may be driven by a belt (not shown) in the usual manner. To support the work in proper relation to the tool on the spindle,a knee 11 may be provided havin a dovetail groove adapted to receive and s ide vertically aloner a dovetail projection 15 on the front. face o? said standard.
A saddle 17 may be mounted on and slide along said knee toward and from said standard and is guided by a dovetail projection 19 on said knee entering a similarly shaped groove on said saddle.
A table 21 may be mounted on and slide transversely of said knee and he guided by a dovetail projection 23 entering a similarly shaped groove on the saddle.
To elevate and lower the knee. it may be provided with the usual screw 25 (Fig. 4) mounted in a bearing in a foot 27 on said standard beneath said knee. This screw has a bevel gear 29 fastl thereon which may be rotated manually by the bevel pinion 31 fast on a shaft 33 (Fig. 1Q) journaled in bearings in the knee and provided with the usual hand-crank (not shown). To rotate the knee feed screw automatically, there nialv be provided a bevel pinion 35 (Fig. 4) meshing with the bevel gear Q9 and mounted fast on a shaft 37 journaled in hearings in the knee. This shaft luis a pinion 39 fast thereon adapted to be driven at the times desired by means of a sliiftable gear 41 splined to a shaft. 43 (Fig. 11) having one end journaled in a bearin in the knee and its opposite end journale in a. bearing 45 in the end of a shaft 47 journaled in bearings in the knee. The shafts 43 and 47 may be connected at the times desired by means of a. clutch 49 ada ted to be controlled by means more fully hereinafter described. The shaft 47 has a sleeve 51 splined and slidable thereon and provided at one end thereof with a gear 53 meshing with a gear 55 on a shaft 57 journaled in bearings in the knee. The, gear 55 is driven by one of a series of cone ars 59 on a shaft- 61 journaled in bearings in a tumbler 63 mounted on and adapted to oscillate about the shaft 57. 'llie tumbieris'keyed to a sleeve 65 projecting toward the front of the knee, whereit receives a crank 67 having a. handle 69 adapted to be held in different ositions of adjustment by a. spring-press pin 71 in said handle ada ted to enter any of a series of holes in the fiice of the knee.
The tumbler gears may be driven either by a pinion 73 (Fig. 4) or a gear 75 fast on a shaft 77 having one end journaled in a slidingr bearing 79 (I `igs. 4 and 12) and its opposite end slidably mounted in and splined to a sleeve shaft 81 jouriialed in a bearing iii theknee. The slidable bearing 79 may be adjusted to bring either the pinion 73 or the gear 75 in position to mesh with any of the cone gears 59 carried by the tumbler in order to impart different. speeds thereto. To shift the bearing 79 it may have a rack 83 (Fig. 4) meshing with a worm 85 on a stud shaft 87 journaled iii a bearing in the knee and having' at one end thereof a crank 89 rovided with a handle 91 adapted to be he'd in different positions of adjustment by a spring-pressed pin 93 adapted to enter any of a series of holes on the face of the knee.

In the present instance of the. invention, the tumbler carries four different sized gears ada ted to mesh with either the pinion 73 or tie gear 75, thereby providing eight different speeds by the simp e adjustments described.
VIt will be understood` however. that the number of tumbler gears may be varied to furnish a different number of speeds if required.
Siinple. means may be provided to double the number of speeds obtained by the cone gears and the gears 73 and 75. To accomplish this, a pinion 95 (Fig. 11) may be mounted fast. on the shaft 57. referred to, driven bv the cone gears. and said pinion may mesi with ear 97 loose on the shaft 47, referred to. o connect the gear 97 with the. shaft 47 the sleeve 51 and the hub'o'f the gear 97 may be provided with'opposed teeth forming a clutch 99. This clutch may be shifted manually by means of a shoe 101 entering the circumferential groove in said sleeve. said shoe beingr fast on a shaft 103 (Fig. l) projecting beyond one side of the knee and having` a crank fastY thereon provided with a handle 105 havin#` a springpressed pin adapted to' engage either of two holes 107 on a plate on said knee.
By the const ruction described the handle may be readily rocked to open the. clutch to its position shown in` Fig. 1l, in which the drive from the gear 5o is to the shaft 47 through the gear 53: or the handiel may be rocked to close the clutch, thereby sliding the sleeve .3l toward the leftrof Fig. 11, movingr thtgear 5d out of mesh with the. gear 55 and connecting the gea r 97 to the shaft 47. Then the drive from the cone gears will be through the ar 55, its shaft 57, the pinion 95, through t e ear 97 to the shaft 47.
Havingdescri ed the mechanism whereby a number of different speeds of feed ,are rovided for the knee, next will be descrlbed simple transmission means whereby these different speeds of feed may be imparted to the saddle. This may be accomplished through thel shiftable gear 41, referred to, which is adapted to be slid toward the left (Fig. 11) into mesh with a gear 1.09 fast on the saddie feed screw shaft 111 journaled in bearings in the knee. This feed screw shaft works in a nut 113 (Fig. 4) carried by a bracket 115 depending from the saddle. The saddle screw shaft ma project forwardly beyond the front face o the knee to receive the usual handle (not shown) permitting the saddle to be fed manually.
Next will be described simple means whereby the table may be fed along the saddle at any of the speeds obtained by any ofthe feeds for the knee and saddle. To accomplish this, the shiftable gear 41 is adapted to slide toward the left (Fig. 4)
Ainto mesh with a gear 117 fast on a shaft 119 journalcd in bearings in the knee. This shaft projects through and is splined to a sleeve 121 journaled in a bearing in the saddle bracket 115, referred to, said sleeve having a bevel gear 123 fast thereon driving a bevel gear 125 fast on a sleeve shafty 127 projecting upwardly through and journaled in a verticalY bearing in said bracket. The upper end of this sleeve shaft has a gear 129 fast thereon meshing with a gear 131 having a hub 132 journaled in a bearing on the saddle and ke 'ed to the table feed screw shaft 133 journaled in bearings adjacent the opposite ends of the table. This screw shaft is threaded into a nut 135 (Fig. 7) secured to the saddle.
The saddle may be formed in two parts 137 and 139, vone of which may swivel about the saddle bracket and thereby enable the table to be positioned on a vertical axis at any angle desired. However, the feed transmission mechanism through the saddle bracket described enables the feed to be transmitted to the table in any of its positions of rotative adjustment. Also, the transmission described is readily adaptable to a plain milling machine in which the saddle is not swiveled.
As stated, the shift-able gear 41 may slide on its shaft tothrce different positions of i adjustment,-one for feeding t ie knee, an
other for feeding the saddle. and another for feeding the table. To adjust said gear along its shaft to these positions, its huh (Fig. 4) may have a circumferential groove therein receiving a yoke 111 fast on an axially sliding shaft 143 projecting to and through the front face of the knee, where it receives an operating knob 145. When this knob is thrust Vto its innermost position shown in full lines, the shiftable gear will mesh with the pinion 39 and transmit the feed to 'the knee. When the knob is pulled outward to its position 145EL indicated in dotted lines, the shit'table gear will mesh with the gear 109 and transmit the feed to the saddle. Vhen the knob is pulled to its outermost ositionl 145b indicated in dotted lines, the s iftable gear willmesh with the gear 117 and transmit the feed to the table.
Next will be described the means for shifting the clutch 49, referred to, to control the starting and stopping of the feeds forthe knee, saddle and table. To accom lish this, a T-shaped lever 147 (Figs. 11 an 12) may be provided pivotally mounted within the knee and having an arm'149 with a shoe 149 working in a circumferential groove in the clutch 49. This T-lever may be rocked to open and close the clutch by a fork 151 (Figs. 7 andS) engaging a rounded end 152 (Fig. 11) oflsaid lever. The fork is fast on a horizonal shaft 153 journaled in bearings in the knee and projecting forwardly v beyond the front face of the knee, where Vit receives an operatin handle 155. By the construction describe the handle 155 may cause the fork 151 to rock in a vertical plane and rock the T- lever in a horizontal plane, thereby opening or closing the clutch 49 as desired. y
To hold the clutch in its open and closed positions, the rounded end of the T-lever may receive a. spring-pressed plunger 157 (Figs. 1l and 12) ada ted to engage opposite sides of a wedgelaped projection 159' on a pin 161 secured to a wall of the knee.
Next will be described means to auto matically rock the fork 151 and T-lever to shift the clutch by either upwardor downward movements of the knee. To accomplish this, a sleeve 163 (Figs. 7, 8 and 11) may be journaled on the shaft 153, referred to, and have a segment 165 adapted to enga e a Shoulder 167 on the fork 151. A su 'cient space is rovided between the segment and this s oulder to allow manual rocking of the fork to `shift the clutch Without interference from the sleeve. An arm 169 (Fig. 15) depends from the sleeve 163 and is engaged by the inner end of' a plunger 171, the. outer end of which engages a lever 173 fast ona shaft 175 mounted on the knee and having a lever 1,76 with a pin 176 in line with a pair of dogs 177 (Figs. 7, 11 and 12) adjustably secured by bolts in a T shaped slot in the standard. The dogs may be secured in different positionsot' adjustment and determine the upper and lower `limits of travel of the knee.
'hen the knee is moved vertically downward sufficiently, the lever pin 176n will ena the lower do (Fi 7) and the lever t17g? shaft 175 andgleverg173 will be rocked thereby, causing the lunger 171 to move inward against the SeeVe arm 169. This will rock the sleeve in a contra-clockwise direction (Figs. 7 and 8) and cause the se ment 165 to rock the yoke 151 and the lever 147, thereby opening the clutch 49 and interrupting the feed to the knee.
When the sleeve 165 is not rocked as described to open the clutch, it is held in its position shown in Figs. 7 and 8, by a springpressed plunger 179 mounted on, the knee and adapted to engage an arm 181 projecting upward from the sleeve.
When the knee is moved verticaly upward, the lever pin 176 carried thereby will eventually reach the upper dog and open the clutch 49 and interrupt the feed of the knee in a manner similar to that described for the downward movement of the knee.
Next will be described means operable from movement of the saddle to automatically open the cutch and arrest the feed thereof. To aOmplish this, the saddle may have a dog 183 (Fig. 7) adjustably secured b a bolt in a T-slot therein, and the lever 173, referred to, is of suilicient length to project upward into the path of this dog. As a result, when the saddle has moved to a position i'edeterniined by the location of the dog, the latter will engage the lever 173, depress the lunger 171 and rock the sleeve to open tie clutch in the manner previously described.
Next will be described means operable on movement of the table for automatically opening the clutch and arresting the feed of the table. To accomplish this, the sleeve 163 may have a tooth space 185 (Figs. 7 and 8) therein extending axially thereof adapted to receive a tooth 186 on one end of a lever 187 (Figs. 7, 14, 14) on a screw 189 mounted in a boss 191 carried by the saddle bracket 115, referred to. The opposite end of this lever bears against the lower end of a plug 193 mounted in the gear hub 127 journaled in the saddle bracket. The upper end of this plug bears a ainst a c rank 195 (Fig. 4) on a horizontal s iaft 197 journaled in bearings in the saddle. This shaft has a pinion 199 fast thereon meshing with a. rack plunger 201 adapted to be engaged by a. dog 203 secured by a bolt in different positions of adjustment in a T-slot 1n a face of the table.
When the table travels horizontally to a position predetermined by the location of the dog, the latter will engage and depress the plunger 201, thereby rotating the pinion 199, its shaft 197 and the crank 195. The latter will depress the plug 193, rock the lever 189 and the sleeve 163. The latter in turn wilt rock the fork 151 and the T-lever 147, thereby opening the clutch and arresting the feed.
t will be understood that a sutlicient number of dogs may be provided for the knee, saddle and table to automaticall open the clutch and arrest the feed of saidy parts in opposite directions.
Having described the mechanism for feeding the knee, saddle and table at dierent speeds, and the mechanism for manually or automatically arresting any of the feeds, next will be described means operable from the standard for driving the feeding mechanism carried by the knee. To accomplish this, the sleeve shaft 81, referred to, in the knee, may have a gear 205 (Fig. 12) fast thereon adapted to mesh with and be driven by aV gear 207 (Fig. 1) beneath the gear 205 and fast on the hub of a bevel gear 209 loosely joiirnalcd on a stud 211 secured to the knee. This bevel gear is adapted to be driven in opposite directions b bevel gears 213 havinghuhs joui'naled in earings in a box 215 secured to the face of the knee adjacent the standard. The bevel gears 213 are loosely mounted on a vertical Shaft 217 'ournaled in bearings 219 (Fig. 1) iii a yoke racket 221 mounted on the standard, said shaft being confined against vertical movement.
A clutch (Figs. 1 and 5) is splined to the shaft 217 and mounted between the bevelv gears 213. The clutch and gears have opposed teeth, so that either of said gears may be connected to the vertical shaft to transmit rotation to the bevel gear 209 and thence to the feed mechanism carried by the To shift the clutch to connect the gears alternatively to said shaft according to the direction of feed desired, the clutch is mounted in a bearing arm 225 (Fig. 5) projecting` laterally fi'oiii an elongated hearing 227 mounted in and adapted to slide in the bearing box 215, referred to, carried by the knee. To shift the bearing 227 vertically, a transverse. groove 229 (Figs. 5 and 6) is formed therein receiving a sliding block 231 having a crank pin 233 therein projcctin from the head 235 of a sleeve 237 (Fig. 12 splincd to an end of a control shaft 239 projecting;` through and beyond the front face of the knee` where it has an operatinghaiidle 241 ivotally connected thereto. When this han le is rocked it will turn the shaft 239, the sleeve 237 and the crank pin 233 shifting the bearing 227 vertically to cause the clutch 223 to connect either of the bevel gears 213 with the shaft 217.
To drive the shaft 217, a bevel gear 243 (Fig. 1) may be mounted fast thereon adjacent the upper end thereof and mesh with a bevel gear 245 (Fig. 2) fast on a sleeve shaft 247 journaled in the bearing bracket 221, re-

The shaft 249 may be driven from the spindle 5, referred to. To accomplish this, said spindle is provided with a pinion 253 10 (Fig. l) driving an intermediate gear 255 on a. stud 257 on the standard, said intermediate gear meshing with a gear 259 loose on the sleeve 251, referred to. A clutch 261 fast ,on the shaft 249 has teeth adapted t0 engage teeth rejecting from the hub of the gear 259. hen the shaft 249 is shifted to the right (Fig. 1), the clutch will connect the gear 259 to said shaft, which will drive the vertical shaft 217, and the latter in turn will transmit the drive to the feed mechanism carried by the knee, the direction of feed being controlled by the shifting of the clutch 223 to connect either of the bevel gears 213 with the vertical shaft.
Next will be described simple and effective means for imparting a rapid feed or traverse to the knee, saddle and table, or any of them. To accomplish this, a rotor, in the present instance, in the form of a pulley 263 3 (Figs. 1 and 13) may be loosely mounted on the sleeve 251 and driven from a belt (not shown) at the speed desired. This pulley may be directly connected to the shaft 249 by a friction clutch 265 similar to the one shown in Letters Patent to Wm. F. Groene, No. 959,520, dated May 3l, 1910.'` This clutch may be operated by a conical member 267 fast on the shaft 249, the construction being such that when the shaft is shifted to the left, the clutch will expand and connect the pulley to the shaft, and when the latter is shifted to the right, it will release the friction clutch and, dlsconnect the pulley from the shaft. Thus, sliding of the shaft 249 serves the dual function of connectin and disconnecting the gear 259 to the sha and of connecting and disconnecting vthe pulley to the shaft. The moyement of the shaft to the left opens the gear clutch 261 and closes thepulley clutch 265, and conversely the shifting of the shaft to the right closes the gear clutch and releases the pulley clutch. How ever, the construction is so arranged that the pulley clutch is never closed until the gear clutch has been opened, therefore, the rapid traverse cannot be thrown into operation until after the slower feed obtained by the ar 259 has been interru ted.
Next will be described simple and effective means for shifting the shaft 249 axially for opening and closing the clutches as described. To accomplish this` a collar 269 (Figs. 2 and 3) on the shaft 249 has a circumferential groove therein receiving a fork 271 pivotally 66 mounted on the bracket 221, referred to, and
having a toothed Vsector 273 meshing with a rack plunger 275 mounted in a socket on said bracket. This plunger is urged to the left (Fig. 2) by a helical spring 277 confined between one end of said socket and an enlargement 279 on said plunger. A roller 281 on one end of said `plunger is engaged by a cam 283 fast on a vertical shaft 285 parallel to the transmission shaft 217, referred to, and projecting through a bearing in the box 215 on theV knee. A toothed sector 287 (Figs. 5 and 12) is splined to the shaft 285 and meshes with a yrack bar 289 secured tol a block 291 (Fig. 12) confined axially on the control shaft 239, referred to.
By the construction described, when the control shaft is shifted axially inward, it will cause the rack 289 to rock the sector 287 and the vertical shaft 285. The latter in turn will rock the cam 283, thereby pushing the rack plunger 275 to the right (Fig. 2). This will rock the fork 271 and shift the shaft 249 to the left (Fig. 1), thereby opening the gear clutch 261 and closing the pulley clutch. This will cause the rapid drive of the feed mechanism carried by the knee.
When the control shaft 239 is shifted axiall outward, the clutch shaft 249 will be move to the right of Fig. 1, thereby first opening the pulley clutch and then closing the gear clutch. This will cause the shafts 249 and 217 to be rotated to impart the'working feed to the mechanism carried by the It will be noted that the handle 241 serves the dual function of operating the clutch 223 to control the direction of feed, and of shifting the shaft 249 to control the opening and closing of the gear clutch and pulley clutch.
It 1s important that the rapid traverse rotor or pulley should not be brought into operation while the knee, saddle and table, or any of them, are being fed. To prevent this occurrence, the direction clutch 223 is always disconnected from the bevel gears 213 to interrupt the feed before the pulley clutch can be closed. To accomplish this, the controlling handle 241 may be provided with a guard 293 (Figs. 12 and 16) having an internal flange 295 with a notch 297 therein. A pin 299 on an enlargement on the shaft 239 may escape through said notch to and from chambers 301l and 303 in said guard only whensaid handle 241 is in a predetermined position of adjustment, such that the clutch 223 is in its intermediate position, disconnecting both of the bevel gears 213 from the shaft 217. After the handle has been rocked to this predetermined position, it may be shifted axlally to operate the gear clutch 261 and the pulley clutch 265. After the pin 299 has passed through its groove into either of the chambersl 301 and 303. the handle 241 ma y be rocked to shift the clutch 223 to connect'either of the bevel gears 213 with the shaft 217 according to the direction of feed desired.
The handle 241 may have a ball 241* formed thereon working in a segmental slot 241" in the guard to allow the rocking of the handle to impart the axial and rotative adjustments to the controlling shaft 239.
The handle is located at the front of the knee, where it is conveniently accessible to the operator for controlling the direction of feed, thevvorking feed and the rapid traverse. The clutch 223 serves to control the direction of feed during both the Working feed and the rapid traverse.
Preferably the rapid traverse is obtained independently of the speed change mechanism in the knee. To accomplish this, a gear 305 (Fig. 12) may be mounted loose on the sleeve shaft 81, referred to, and may be connected thereto by a clutch 307 havin teeth adapted to engage teeth on a face 0 aid gear. The gear 305 drives a pinion 309 (Fig. 11) Iabove the gear 305 and fast on a stud shaft journaled 1n bearings in the knee and having a wide-faced gear 311 fast thereon meshing with the shiftable gear 41, referred to, in all of the positions of the latter for feeding the knee, saddle and table. The wide-faced gear 311, pinion 309 and gear 305 will rotate idly during the worlrf ing feeds, but when the clutch 307 is closed, the gear 305 is connected to the sleeve shaft 81 and becomes effective to4 drive the shiftable gear 41 independently of the speed change mechanism mounted in the knee.
To operate the clutch 307, a rocking plate 313 (Fig. 12) may be fulcrumed on a stud 315 in the knee and have an arm carr ing a shoe 3132L engaging said clutch, an an arm carrying an adjustable screw 317 adapted to engage a cani"pro]ection 319 on the block 291, referred to, carried by the control shaft 239. The plate 313 has a socket 321 containing a spring-pressed plunger 323 abutting against a lug 325 projecting inward from the Wall of the knee. This plunger tends to rock the plate in a contra-clockwise direction (Fig. 12) and close the rapid. traverse clutch 307.
lVhen, however, the control shaft 239 is shifted to the left (Fig. 12), the cam projection 319 on the block 291 will rock the plate 313 in a clockwise direction against the resistance of the spring-pressed plunger, thereby holding the clutch 307 open. When the control shaft is shifted to the left, the pulley clutch is opened and a gear clutch is closed. Hence, so long as the control shaft remains in this position, the cam projection 319 will revent closing of the rapid traverse clutc 1 307.
lvhen, however, the control shaft239 is shifted to the right (Fig. 12) to close the pulle clutch and release the work feed clutcli, the cam projection 319 will be moved out of engagement with the pin 317, thereby releasing the clutch operating plate 313 to the action of its spring-pressed plunger 323 and causin the rapid traverse clutch 307 to close. rlghus, the opening and closing of the rapid traverse clutch is controlled incidentally to the shifting of the control shaft 239 axially to control the work feed and ulley clutches.
W en the rapid traverse clutch is closed, the clutch 49 of the work feed mechanism should be open. To accomplish this, a cone sleeve 327 (Fig. 12) may be mounted on the control shaft 239 and engage a pin 329 adjustably mounted on an arm of the T-lever 147, referred to. The construction is such that when the control shaft 239 is shifted to the right, the cone sleeve 327 will press the pin 329 outward, thereby rocking the T-lever in a clockwise direction to open the clutch 49.
Thus, this clutch will be opened incidentally to the shifting of the control shaft for closing the rapid traverse clutch 307 and for closing the pulley clutch. 'With a single movement o the control shaft, the rapid traverse feed may be brought into play, and when this feed is completed, the control shaft may be given a single movement to automatically interrupt the ra id traverse and return again to the Worl feed previously. in operation.
Means has been described for automatically arresting the knee, saddle and table feeds when the Work feeds are taking place. It is also important to provide means to arrestthe rapid traverse feed and prevent travel of the knee, saddle and table sufficiently to cramp or injure their feedscrews. To accomplish this, the control plate for the rapid traverse clutch 307 may have a boss 331 (Figs. S, 9 and 12) thereon containing a. Spring-pressed dog 333 adapted to enga e a notch 335 in an arm 337 fast on the siaft y 153, referred to, for operating the fork 151 erse clutch 307 is held in position to maintain the clutch open, a lug 339 (Fig. 8) on the block 291, referred to, engages the dog 333 and holds the same out of range from the notch 335, but when the rapid traverse clutch is closed, the dog 333 is rocked to the left (Fig. 8) awa from said lug, thereby permitting said og to move into range of said notch. As a conse uence, when any of the stop do s for the nee, saddle and table become e ective to rock the shaft 153, the arm 337 will act through the dog 333 and rock the plate 313 in a direction to open the rapid traverse clutch 307, thereby arresting the feed of the knee, saddle and table according to which of them is being fed. The rocking of the plate to open the clutch moves the dog 333 back to its position beneath the lug 339 on the block 291, and depresses said dog out of range from the notch 335, Where it will not interfere with the rocking of the shaft 53 in controliing the Work feed clutch 49.
The stop dogs referred to may be adjusted on the standard, saddle and knee in suitable positions for preventing ovcrfeeds of the knee, saddle and table, and these dogs may serve to rock the T-lever 149 to open the Work feed clutch 49 and prevent over travel of the Work feeds as well as overtravel of the rapid traverse feeds.
By the machine described, simple and compact means is provided in the knee for Y feeding the knee, saddleand table, or any of them, at different speeds for Working feeds; simple and efectlve means for automatically arresting said Working feeds; simple and effective means for changing from the working feed to the rapid traverse, and vice versa; and simple and effectivermeans for controlling the direction of feed during the Working feed and the rapid traverse. All of the controlling levers for the aforesaid operations are mounted on the knee, Where, they are conveniently and readily accessible to the o erator.
The term rotor is used in he specification and claims to mean a pulley, gear, wheel, or other suitable rotatable driving element.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown, but that various deviations ma be made therefrom, without departing rom the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Claims:
1. A machine of the character described com rising in combination, a standard, a wor support movably mounted thereon, feed and rapid traverse rotors mounted on said standard, transmission means between said rotors and said support, clutch means on said standard for alternativel rendering said rotors effective, and contro ling means for said clutch means provided with operating means on said support 2. A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a standard, a Work support movably mounted thereon, feed and rapid traverse rotors mounted on said standard, transmission means for imparting movement from said rotors to said support, a clutch for controlling the direction of feed of said sup ort by both rotors, and controlling means fbi' said clutch provided With operating means on said suport.

A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a standard, a work support movably mounted theleon, feed and rapid traverse rotors mounted on said standard, transmission means for imparting movement from said rotors to said support, and control means on said standard for alternatively rendering said rotors effective to feed said support, a controlling handie on and operable from said support, and connections between said handle and control means.

A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a standard, a work support mov-ably mounted thereon, feed and rapid traverse rotors mounted on said standard, transmission means for imp parting movement from said rotors to said support, and controlling means extending from said standard to said support and operable from the. latter to control said rotors when said support is at various elevations.

A machine of the character described comlprising in combination, a standard, a Wort support movably mounted thereon, rotors mounted on said standard for feeding said support at different speeds, means to transmit movement from said rotors to said support, clutches for rendering either of said rotors eifective and determining the direction of feed, and a single control for said clutches mounted on said support.

A machine of the character described, comprising in combination, a standard, a knee mounted on said standard, a work support movably mounted on said knee, a work feed rotor and a rapid traverse rotor mounted on said standard, means to transmit movement from said work feed rotor to said support at variable speeds, anda single control mounted on said support for rendering said rotors alternatively effective and for determining the direction of movement of said support when fed by either of said rotors. l

A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a standard, a work su port movably mounted thereon, work feed and rapid traverse rotors on said standard, transmission means between said rotors and said `support including an upright shaft, gears on said shaft, a clutch to connect either of said gears to said shaft, clutches to render either of said rotors ell'ective, and controlling means for all of said clutches having means to prevent shifting of said rotor clutches excepting when said gear clutch is disconnected from said gears.

A machine of the character described com rising in combination, a standard, a wor support movably mounted thereon, work feed and rapid traverse rotors on said standard, transmission means between said rotors and said support including an .uprghtshaft, gears on said shaft, a clutch to connect either of said gears to said shaft, clutches to render either of said rotors effective, and controlling means for all of said clutches including a shaft having an axial movement to shift said rotor clutches and a rotative movement to shift said gear clutch, a handle for giving said shaft said movements, and a guard for said handle having means to prevent shifting of said rotor clutches excepting when in a position to disconnect said gear clutch from said gears.

A machine of the character described comlprising in combination, a standard, a wor,v support niovably mounted thereon, and means to feed said support relatively to said standard including different size gears on said support, tumbler gears on said support, means to rock said tumbler gears realtively to said different size gears, and means to shift the latter axially to brin the latter selectively opposite each of sai tumbler gears.

A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a standard, a Work support movably mounted thereon, and means to feed said support relatively to said standard including different size gears on said support, tumbler gears on said su port, means to rock said tumbler gears re atively to said different size gears, means to shift the latter axially to bring the latter selectively opposite each of said tumbler gears, and gear means to multiply the speeds obtained by said tumbler gears.

A machine of the character described com rising in combination, a standard, a wor support movably mounted thereon, and means to feed said support relatively to said standard including different size gears on said support, a carrier for said different size gears, tumbler gears on said support, means to rock said tumbler gears relatively to said dil'eient'size gears, a rack for said carrier, a worm meshing with said rack, a shaft for said worm. and a handle for rotating said worm to shift said rack and carrier to bring the gears thereon selectively opposite any of said tumbler gears.

A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a standard, a work support movabiy mounted thereon, and feeding means on said support comprising a sleeve shaft, a gear for rotating said shaft, a shaft telescoping and splined to said sleeve shaft, di'erent size gears on said telesccping shaft, tumbler gears adapted to mesh with said different size gears, manually operable means for shifting said dilerent size gears and their shaft axiaily, and manually operable means for rocking said tumbler gears relatively to said different size gears.
