(l. w. BENNETT.
TOY. I APPLICATION FILED DEC-19.19M-
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.
M w w w A TTOR/VEY GLARENCE W. BENNETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '7, 1919.
Application filed December 19, 1918. Serial No. 267,460.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, CLARENCE W. BEN- NETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a toy which may be propelled by a child seated thereon and causing its propulsion by bringing the feet into contact with the ground as in walking or running. The invention may be specifically embodied in what is known as a Kid: die Kar.
The object of the invention is to provide such a toy with mechanism whereby the propulsive movement of the toy will cause reciprocal movement of a suitable part or member connected with the wheels.
The invention consists of the combination and construction of parts as hereinafter claimed, and as fully described in the following specification with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a Kiddie Kar provided with my improvement;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The device is shown as approximating the appearance of a horse, and in the drawing 10 denotes the body mounted on a pair of rear wheels 11 and a front wheel 12. The rear wheels are carried by a shaft 13 which is supported from the body 10 by a bracket member 14. At the rear of the body 10 over the wheels 11 is a seat 15. The front wheel 12 is mounted on a shaft 16 revoluble in legs 17 depending from the front portion of the horses body 10. j
The head of the horse includes the two jaw members 18 and 19, one of which is fixed and the other of which is movable. In the form shown the lower jaw 18 is fixed while the upper jaw 19 is mounted on a pivot 20 which is extended beyond each side of the head to form the handle bars 21. The head proper is hollowed out at 22 to provide room for the pivot 20 and for other instrumentalities to be described.
The wheel 12 is centrally vertically split, and arranged between the parts thereof is an eccentric 23 rigidly mounted on the shaft 16. Loosely embracing the eccentric 23 is a strap 24 having connected thereto a link 25 the upper end of which is curved and provided with a hook 26 engaging a pin 27 at the lower inner end of the movable jaw 19. The straight portion of the link 25 is movably' guided in a tube or casing 28 extending vertically through the fore part of the horses body, in line with the shaft 16.
The toy operates as follows :When a child rests on the seat 15 and moves the toy forward, the wheel 12 and eccentric 23 will revolve, acting on the strap 24 to alternately depress and elevate the link 25. Owing to the connection of the hook 26 with the pin 27, the alternate depression and elevation of the link will transmit corresponding motion to the pivot jaw 19 causing the latter to alternately open and close in relation to the fixed jaw 18. a
It will of course be understood that the invention need not necessarily be embodied in the precise form of mechanism shown and described, as it is equally applicable to any device having a propulsive motion to be transmitted to a movable part for actuating the latter.
I claim A propelled toy, comprising a body having a fixed jaw and a pivotally mounted jaw, a tube extending vertically through the fore part of said body, wheels by means of which the toy may be propelled, shafts on which said wheels are respectively carried, an eccentric fixed to one of said shafts, a strap loosely embracing said eccentric, and a link movably guided in said tube and connecting said strap with said pivoted jaw whereby the latter is actuated as said toy is propelled.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE w. BENNETT.
