SEPABATOR-GATE GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 22, 1917. Serial No. 197,880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL HENRY REAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separator-Gate Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprises a guard or shield to be used in the vicinity of one of the outlet gates of a separator or jig. While its application is not limited, it has been illustrated herein for convenience, as attached to a jig of the type set forth in the United States Patent No. 1,121,715 to William Wesley Cooper.
In the operation of jigs of the plunger or pulsatin type, it is found that under certain conditions there is created an upward or circular movement of the heavier materials in the vicinity of the outlet gate therefor, which movement of the materials causes an intermixture of the heavier and lighter portions which prevents proper separation.
To obviate this difficulty to a certain extent, a shield or guard has been provided, but when such shield is connected to the outlet gate, it materially affects the proper working of the gate, and when secured to the body of the jig as an integral part thereof, it does not permit of proper adjustment to take care of various grades of materials, various amounts being delivered, and other considerations which are essential to the proper separation of the materials.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a guard or shield which may be adjusted relatively to and independently of an outlet gate; which ma be positively locked in a plurality of adjusted positions so as to be unaffected by the pulsations or movement of the materials; to provide for adjustment of a portion of the shield relatively to the bottom of the separation chamber, or the screen, so that the innor edge of the shield may be kept fixed at approximately the line of demarcation between the heavier and lighter portions of the materials being separated; and which will, in a word, provide a structure simple and practical, capable of remedying the defects above noted. Other objects and advantages will in part be obvious, and in part be treated more particularly in the description which follows Drawings are appended illustrating an in the region embodiment of the invention, the followmg views being shown Figure 1, is a view in transverse vertical section;

In the drawings there is shown a jig or separator 1, which comprises the usual tank 2 and instrumcntality for pulsating liquid through materials to be separated, which may be placed on a screen or bed 2' in the separating chamber 3. A feed chute 4, and baflie 5 being here shown for this purpose.
At one portion of the separating chamber there is an exit gate 6 which controls an exit or opening for the outlet of heavier materials. This gate is secured, in the present embodiment, hingedly, to a cross piece 7 which joins the side walls of the separating chamber, and. the lighter portions of materials separated are adapted to pass over the top of this cross-piece, conveyors 8 being provided to handle the respective portions after they leave the separating chamber.
Automatic means for opening and closing the gate 6 are shown associated therewith, and comprise a link 9 secured at one end to the gate, and at the other end to a cross-arm 10 carrying a counterweight and mounted on a support 11.
All of the above construction is well known in this art, and will not be described more in detail. The present invention has to do with means for protecting the outlet gate from various factors which tend to impair proper separation of the materials, and to create a mixing of these heavier an lighter portions of materials to be separated of the outlet openings therefor; found in practice that a shield or guard which will permit the liquid to pass therethrough, and one end of which will extend inwardly toward the body of the separator chamber for a substantial distance may be used to advantage for this pur- It has been pose.
Such a shield or guard is desigpated by the numeral 12 in the present em odiment. It is desirable that a portion of the inner edge of the shield may be preferably located on the level of the line of demarcation between the heavier and lighter portions of the materials to be separated and to this end means are )rovided for effecting an adjustment of this end of the shield with relation to the bed or screen. To this shield, there is secured a rod or link 13, by any suitable securing means 14. The rod passes through an opening 15 in a cross iece l6, and means for adjusting the relative position of the rod with relation to the cross piece are provided, and with these are associated means for locking the rod and consequently the guard or shield, in various positions of adjustment.
In Fig. 1, the end of the rod is threaded, and a thumb nut 17 is provided for adjusting the rod, and a lock nut 18 on the under side of the cross piece locks the parts in various positions of adjustment.
Where the shield is attached to the gate itself, there is frequently trouble by reason of the fact that the motion of the shield will rule the motion of the gate, or vice versa, thus preventing accurate adjustment between these two which is necessary to meet varying conditions of usage.
The present invention contemplates relative movement between the gate and shield,
and independent adjustment of the shield, whereby each will be permitted to perform its individual function. To this end, the shield, is, in the present embodiment, se cured, hingedly, as by means of a hinge 19 which is secured to the cross piece 7. The hinge, in the present instance is located at the upper edge of the cross piece Where the lighter materials pass to the outlet therefor, but it may be ad usted with relation to the upper edge of the cross piece and outlet gate for the lighter materials as conditions may necessitate.
In Fig. 4, there is shown a combined means for effecting an adjustment of the shield with relation to the bed or screen and with relation to the gate and locking means for positively securing the parts in adjusted position.
In this instance the rod 13 is connected to one end of a lever arm 20. This arm is pivotally mounted at 21 upon a supporting standard 22, and is capable of being locked in different positions by means of a rack 23 and detent 24.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides simple and efi'icacious means for effecting the results and objects enummatml, and while it is disclosed in the present embodiment, it will be understood. that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction herein set forth, as many changes in the general construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I claim is:-
1. In a separator, a bed, an outlet for ma tcrials, an outlet gate; a shield comprising a grating hingedly secured in proximity to the outlet; and means connected substantially with the free end of the shield, for rigidly securing said shield in adjusted posi tion with relation to the bed and gate and independently of the gate.

3. In a separator, a bed, an outlet for materials, an outlet gate; a shield comprising a grating hingedly secured in proximity to the outlet; member connected substantially with the free end of the shield; means associated with the member for adjusting the shield With relation to the bed and gate and independently of the gate; and means for rigidly securing the shield in adjusted position.
