A TIOR/VE Y8 EDGAR A, ZIMMERMAN, OF SHAMOKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAIR-PLANE.
1.31 "was.
Application filed April 19, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. ZnrM aR- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shamokin, in the county of Northamberland and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Planes, of which the followin is a specification.
lily invention relates to halr cutters and shavers, and more particularly to that type of instrument known as hair planes.
An object of my invention is to provide I an instrument that will be easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the lnvention 1s to provide suitable means, whereby a razor blade may be used in connection with a comb, thereby the combination forming an efficient safety razor as well as a hair cutter.
Still another object is to provide means whereby a razor blade or blades may be held in adjustable positions with respect to a comb, for regulating the blade or blades as seen fit, to give a close or a very close shaye.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my 1mproved mechanism applied to an ordinary pocket comb;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal view taken on the lines 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp showing the transverse ribs, and
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of my device, showing the whole combination as carried in a comb case.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The body portions or plates 1 and 2 of the device are approximately oval in shape and joined together by a bow or joint 3. EX- tending transversely of and formed in said body members or portions 1 and 2, are ribs or depressions 4: and 5 which are adapted to seat against the middle portion of the razor blades 6 and 7 when applied to a comb and in operative position. On the free end of member 2 is an extension 8 having shoulders 9 bent substantially at right angles to it and a seat or keeper 10 between said shoulders adapted to receive the Specification of Letters Patent.

extension hook or member 11 formed on the free end of member 1.
It will be seen that the portion 3 of the device will engage the last large tooth 12 of the comb 13 and the body members 1 and 2 will extend on each side of the comb and rigidly secure the blades 6 and 7 in operative position when the hook 11 is engaged in the keeper 10, at the outside end of the comb. The plates 1 and 2 are substantially parallel to engage each other for more readily holding the blades in position.
It will be understood that when the blades 6 and 7 are placed in position, they are adapted to be changed more toward or away from the outer ends of the comb teeth, thus adjusting them for Whatever is to be cut.
This device may also serve to hold the blades with their covers on, so that there is no danger in carrying, of cutting the clothes. As: is shown, the whole combina tion may readily be carried in an ordinary comb case. Another feature is that the blades and clip may be very easily cleaned, with much less trouble than with an ordinary safety razor.
Any type of razor blades, that is popular razor blades. may be employed with my improvement, and it will be seen that the blades may be adjusted So as to use them for cutting on either one or both edges.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- States is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a comb, a razor blade thereon, and a longitudinal clamping member engaging and holding said blade in position on said comb whereby it may be adjusted longitudinally, laterally and angularly.
2. A device of the character described comprising a comb, razor blades positioned on said comb, and a longitudinal clamping member engaging and holding said blades in position on said comb whereby they may be adjusted longitudinally, laterally and angularly.
3. A device of the character described comprising a comb, a razor blade positioned on each side of said comb, and a longitudinal clamping member engaging and holding said blades in position on said comb whereby they may be adjusted longitudinally, laterally and angularly.
4. A device of the character described comprising a comb, razor blades thereon,
and a one piece clamp adapted to engage one of the teeth of a comb, and the outer end of the comb.
5. A device of the character described comprising a comb, razor blades thereon, a one piece clamp, said clamp having sub stantially oval body portions, a keeper on the free end of one of said members and a hook on the free end of the other member.
6. A device of the character described comprising a comb, razor blades thereon, a one piece adjustable clamp, one end engaging one of the teeth of said comb, and the other; end engaging the outer end of said com 7. A device of the character described comprising a comb, razor blades thereon, a dam having its opposite body members provided with transverse ribs, and fastening means at their outer ends.
8. A device of the character described comprising a comb, razor blades thereon, a one piece clamp having opposite body members provided with transversely extending ribs, a keeper having substantially right angular extending ears on the free end on one of said 'body members, and a hook for engagement in said keeper positioned on the free end of the other body member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EDGAR A. ZIMIMERMAN.
