Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 30, 1919.
Application filed. July 3, 1919. Serial No. 308,583.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM SUDnRov, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, N. Y., have invented a new and useful Cluster-Setting, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to cluster settings, and the objects of the invention are to provide a setting of this character of gems is made separate and distinct from the back member, and the two members are connected by a tubular connection which preferably involves a screw threaded joint for enabling the ready attachment and detachment of such members. The details of the invention will be better understood by a consideration of the accompanying drawing, wherein the invention is illustrated as embodied in one of its practical commercial forms.
In this drawing:
Figures 1 and 2 are plan and edge views respectively of the top plate.
Figs, 3 and 4 are similar views of the back member.
Fig. 5 is a central sectional view of the two members of the setting in assembled relation.
The top plate 7 which forms the base for the gems, is provided with suitable sockets or seats 8 for the jewels or gems, the number of these seats depending upon the number and size of stones to be set and the final shape of the cluster which it is desired to produce.
The back member consists of a series of radiating arms 9 inclining forwardly from their points of attachment to the centrally disposed supporting stud 10.
The stud 10 is shown as of tubular construction and as centrally screw threaded at 11 for engagement with corresponding screw threads on the interior of the tubular post 12 which projects rearwardly from the central portion of the top plate. This tubular post 12 surrounds the central gem seat in the top plate as clearly indicated 1n Figs. 1 and 5, and the sides of the post are preferably apertured as indicated at 13 to admit light to the back of the stone mounted in the central seat.
The interior of the tubular stud at the forward end thereof is shown as flared outwardly at 14 for the purpose of admitting as much light as possible and also providing a reflective surface at the back of the stone seated at the center of the cluster. The tubular connecting means described admits light through the cluster from the back, and forms readily detachable means for firmly securing the two parts of the cluster together.
This invention, it will be seen makes it possible to use the stones of the cluster with different articles of jewelry by simply unscrewing the top plate from the back member, which may be applied to one article of jewelry and transferring the same to the back member on a different piece of jewelry. Thus, the same set of stones may be used at different times with different pieces of jewelry, and in each case when the top plate is applied to the back member the desired artistic effect will be produced by reason of the cooperation of the radiating arms of the back member with the rim portion of the top plate.
I claim:
1. A cluster setting comprising a top plate provided with seats for gems and with a rearwardly extending substantially centrally disposed tubular post and a back member having a tubular stud engaged with the tubular post of the top plate, and radiating arms extending forwardly from the central portion thereof to the rim of the top plate.
2. A cluster setting comprising a to plate provided with seats for gems and wit a rearwardly extending substantially centrall disposed tubular post and a back mem er having a tubular stud engaged with the tubular post of the top plate, radiating arms extending forwardly from the central portion thereof to the rim of the top plate, said tubular post and stud having screw threaded engagement enabling ready attachment and detachment of the top plate and back member.
3. A cluster setting, comprising a stud.
having arms radiating from therearward having gem seats therein and both said members having interfitting tubular portions for securing the members together.
- 5; .A cluster setting comprising a top plate anda back member, said top plate having gem seats and the back member having 4 radiatingarms extending from thecentral portionof: said member forwardly toward .therim portion of the top plate, and tubular means detaohablyconnecting the central ortions of said two. members.
copies at this patent may be obtained tor 6. A.c1uster setting comprising atop plate provided with gem seats and with a rearwardly extending tubular post, said tubular post having light openings in the side thereof, and a back member with which the tubular post of said top plate'is engaged. 7 f
7Q A cluster setting comprising a top plate provided with gem seats, a back mem ber provided with radiating arms cooperating with the rim portion of said top plate and means for detachably securing a central portion of said back member to the central portion of said top member.
8. A cluster setting comprising a top plate provided with a central perforation and with gem seats disposed about said cen-.
