UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. LOCKHART AND EVERE'IT H. ROBY, OF CLEVELAND, O HIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. Loom .HART and EVERETT I-I. Rosi', citizens of the United States, residing at'Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashing-Maehines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to washing machines and has for its objects the provision of a machine which will be simple and elfieient in operation, one which will wash clothes placed therein by suction instead of by the usual method of pounding or of tumbling the clothes, one which will be cheap of manufacture, and one which, by the particular construction employed, will operate at a minimum expense. Other and more limited objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description:
In the drawings, Figure |1 is a vertical section through the machine constructed in aecordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View with part of the cover broken away. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of lFig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of one of the suction cups or bells and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail View of a clutch employed to connect the certain-parts to be described hereinafter.
The device comprises a tub 1 mounted upon legs 2 rigidly secured together by horizontal braces 3 and 4. Two of the legs, indicated at 2a, are spaced apart from the tub to provide supports for a bearing 5 in which is reciprocally mounted a. rod 6 having pivoted at its lower end a pitman 7 in turn connected to a crank shaft 8. A pulley 9 is mounted on the aforesaid crank shaft and has driving connection through a belt 10 with a motor 11 mounted upon the horizontal braces 3. At its upper end the rod 6 has yieldingly mounted thereon an arm 12, which over-hangs the tub 1, and a rod 13 is fixed to the arm 12 in a manner to be described hereinafter.4
Within the tub a basket 14, shown as composed of staves, is yieldingly supported by springs 15 and 16 at the bottom and top Specification of Letters Patent.

respectively. A cover 17 is lixed to the top by screws 18 and is provided with a hinged portion 19 to the top of which is secured a bearing 20 in which the rod 13 reciprocates. The clothes are placed within the basket 14 and are operated upon by a plurality of suction bells 21 carried by a spider 22 affixed to the end of the shaft 13. The aforementioned bells comprise a frustoconical portion 23 provided with a threaded extension 24 by means of which they are secured to the spider 22. A ball check valve comprising a casting 25 provided with a seat 26 and a ball 27 is screwed in .juxtaposition to the threaded extension 24,
and when the bell is forced against the clothes air within the bell is expelled through the valve and a vacuumjs formed whereby the dirt is sucked from the clothes. The spring 40 permits a certain amount of yielding movement to the arm 12.
To allow for the placing of the clothes within the basket the rod 13 is itted at one end in a socket 28 in which the rod 13 is held by a latch 29, said latch comprising a pin 30 having at one end a head 31 holding the shaft 13 in place, and at the other end an operating handle 32. A spring 33 is interposed between the head 3l and the bottom of the bore 35formed in the arm 12 and normally holding the latch in closed position. By releasing the latch the arm 12 may be swung away from the rod 13, and the rod carrying with it the spider 22 is raised until it touches the inside of the hinged cover' 19 when the entire unit is swung back upon the hinges 38 to allow placing of the clothes in the basket.
IVe claim:
1. In a washing machine, the combination of a covered tub, a clothes basket therein, springs between the tops of the tub and basket and the bottoms of the tub and basket respectively, a suction device located within the basket and having a rod extending through the cover of the tub, and means to. vibrate said rod and suction device up and down, said means including a swinging arm to which the rod is detachably connected.
2. In a washing machine, the combination of a tub having a cover, a basket in the tub, In testimony whereof, we do aHX our sigsprings between the bottom of the basket natures in presence of two witnesses.
and the bottom of the tub, springs between CHARLES F. LOCKHART. the rim of the basket and the cover of the EVERETT. H. ROBY.
tub, and a reciprocating pounder located in Witnesses:
the basket, and having an operating rod eX- JOI-IN A. BOMMHARDT,
tending through the cover of the tub. ROBERT L. BRUCK.
