ELECTRIC CONTROLLER.
, Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept 16, 1919.
Application filed. December 26, 19.18. Serial No. 2685300.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. OGDEN, a citizen of the ,United States, resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamiltolnand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Controllers, of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description, reference being had to.
the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this spec fication.
My invention relates to electric controllers andhas for its object the provisionof means whereby the operator of such a controller is revented from reversing the current wit out first bringing the controller mechanism to a dead stop at the off position.
In the operation of electric controllers, such as are designed for commercial trucks and other similar purposes, it is necessary,.
in order that the controller and other mechanism be kept from 1n ury, that the flow of current be not reversed without first bringing the controller to a definite or dead.-
, appear from the following detailed description thereof.
In the drawings 2- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of an electric controller constructed 1n accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the controller arm and slider, in accordance with this invention.
The numeral 1 indicates the upper plate of the casing of an electric controller of ordinary design, the same being provided with a center boss 2, having the usual bearing for the controller drum shaft 3. Secured to the upper end of the shaft is a lever 4 provided with an operating handle 5, in accordance generally with the usual construction.
The plate 1 is provided with the depressions 6 in which a spring pressed ball "Z in the lever is arranged to engage for indicat- .ing, jand frictionally securingthe lever in, des red positions. ln order that the operating lever 4 may be brought to a definite stop in the off position, the plate 1. of the casing is providedwith lugs ,8 and 9.1mequally distanced from the axis of the shaft 8, and disposedon different radii, as clearly shown in Fig; 2 of the drawing.
The under side of the arm 4: is provided with bosses-10 between. which a bar or slider 11 is slidably mounted, plates 12 being socured to the bosses 10 under the slider 11, in order to retain the same in position. The slider 11 is provided with a lug 13 arranged to engage either of the lugs 8 or 9, in ac cordance with the position in which the slider is placed, one or the other of said lugs being at all times in the path of the lug 13. I11 order that the slider may be held in proper position to engage either the lug 8 or the lug 9, the same is provided with a spring pressed ball 1a, which is arranged to engage in recesses 15 in the underside. of the arm. The outer end of the slider 11 is provided with a finger piece 16 for the operation thereof.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description thereof to those familiar with the art to which the same appertains. When the slider is in forward position, in which it is shown in Fig. 1, the operating arm 4 may be moved to the right for making the forward contacts. When it is desired to reverse, the lever is brou ht to neutral position where it is stopped day the engagement of lug 13 against the lug 9 on the casing. The slider 11, is then pushed back until the lug 13 which passes to the left of lug 8, clears the lug 9, after which the lever may be moved to the left to make'the reverse contacts. Before the controller lever can be moved to make the forward contacts again, the reverse operation of the slider must be performed when the lever is in neutral position before it can be advanced further to make the forward contacts. It will thus be seen that in order to reverse in either direction it is absolutely essential that a. positive stop or 9 other than the one which it should normally engage When moving in the direction of operation. Injury to the controller or motor mechanism by a too quick reversal is thus entirely overcome.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an electric controller, having a casing and an operating lever, a bar slidably mounted on said lever a lug on said bar and tWo lugs on said casing, said lugs being unequally distanced from'the axis of said lever, so that one or the other thereof is at all times in the path of travel of the lug 011 said bar during the operation of said lever, and said lugs on said casing being disposed on different radii from the axis of said lever so that the lug on said bar may by the sliding thereof be moved from one side of one of the lugs on said casing to the opposite side of the other lug thereon.
2. In an electric controller having a casing and an operating lever, a bar slidably mounted on said lever, a lug on said bar, two lugs on said casing, said lugs being unequally distanced from the aXis of said lever, so that one or the other thereof is at all times in the path of travel of the lug on said bar during the operation of said lever, and said lugs on said casing being disposed on different radii from the axis of said lever so that the lug on said bar may by thesliding thereof be moved from one side of one of the lugs on said casing to theopposite side of the other lug thereon, and means for securing said bar in desired position on said lever.
