W. H. HIMES.
. TRACTOR PLOW- APPLICATION FILED MAR. 1. I919.

2 SHEETSSHEET 2.
THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRADH C0. WASHINGTON, I).'C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER H. HIMES, OF GROVE CITY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMES COHEN TRACTOR 00., OF GROVE CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRACTOR-PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Se t. 16, 1919.
Application filed March 1, 1919'. Serial No. 280,121.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. HIMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grove City, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tractor-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to improvements in tractor plows.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved tractor plow of the alternating type with means for simultaneously adjusting both plows to regulate the depth of the furrow.
Second, to provide an improved plow support or hanger means which permits lateral movement of the plow to pass an obstruction and at the same time normally hold the plow in its proper upright working position.
Third, to provide an improved plow having these advantages which is comparatively simple in structure and at the same time strong and durable.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed ,out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompan ing drawing forming a part of this speci cation, in which: 7
Figure I is a side elevation of a plow embodying the features of my invention, one of the plows being raised and the other lowered, various of the parts being shown conventionally for convenience in illustration.
Fig II is a detail plan view.
. Fig. III is a rear elevation with parts shown in broken section.
Fig. IV is an enlarged detail side elevation of the means for regulating the depth of the furrow.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the running gear frame, 2 the traction or depending from the frame "by the draft bars 8. The draft bars are pivoted to the hangers at 9 and to "the front ends of the plow beam at 10. The hangers are provided with brace rods 11. Adjusting screws 12 are provided for raising and lowering the front ends of the beams 6. The adjusting screws engage collars 13 secured to the beams at the pivot points thereof.
An adjusting haft 14 is disposed longitudinally of the frame and provided with beveled gears 15 meshing with beveled gears 16 on theattaching screws. The, shaft 14 is provided with a hand wheel 17. The rotation of this shaft 14 raises the front-ends of the plow beams thus regulating the depth of the furrow, and the beams of both plows are simultaneously raised and lowered so ghat a uniformadjustment issecured thereor.
The plows are raised from and lowered to Y the ground and supported laterally by. a mechanism comprising supporting bars 18 having arms 19 pivotally mounted on the rods 20. These arms are connected by thecross arms 22 near the rear ends thereof.
The supporting bar and arms have spherical bearing members 23 at their ends. Link 24: having sockets 25 coacting with these spherical bearing )members are provided. These links are connected by the crossed springs 26, the springs being connected with the links near the ends thereof. The supporting and adjusting chains 27 are connect-ed to the supporting bars and to the shafts 28 whereby the plows may be raised or lowered. The means for actuating these shafts 28 are not illustrated or described in detail as they form no part of my invention. Manual or power means or both may be provided as desired.
With this arrangement of parts the plows may be conveniently raised and lowered and are supported to yield laterally to pass an obstruction such as a stone or stump, or in turning a corner side movement is permitted, at the same time the springs return the plow to the neutral position after the obstruction is passed. The plows are maintained in a vertical position even though thrown or deflected to one side.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a simple and practical embodiment. I have not attempted to illustrate certain modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to adapt or embody the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V
1. In a plow, the combination with a run ning gear frame, of front and rear wheels alined .to travel in a furrow, oppositely disposed alined plows provided with beams, draft bar hangers on said frame, draft bars pivotally mounted on said hangers and pivotally connected to the plow beams, adjusting screws having threaded connection with the front ends of the plow beams whereby they may be raised and lowered, an actuating shaft mounted on said frame, said actuating shaft and adjusting screws being provided with coacting beveled gears whereby the screws are simultaneously actuated to adjust the beams, and independent means for raising and lowering the plows.
2. In a plow, the combination with a running gear frame, of front and rear wheels alined to travel in a furrow, oppositely disposed alined plows provided with beams, draft bar hangers on said frame, draft bars pivotally mounted on, said hangers and pivotally connected to the plow beams, adjusting screws having threaded connection with the front ends of the plow beams whereby they may be raised and lowered,
and means for simultaneously adjusting said screws.
3. In a plow, the combination with a running gear frame, of front and rear wheels alined to travel in a furrow, oppositely disposed alined plows provided with beams, draft bar hangers on said frame, draft bars pivotally mounted on said hangers and pivotally connected to the plow beams, and means for simultaneously raising and lowering the front ends of said beams to regulate the depth of the furrow.
4:. In a plow, the combination with a running gear frame, of oppositely disposed plows provided with beams, draft bars connected to the plow beams, adjusting screws for the front ends of the plow beams whereby they maybe raised and lowered, anactuating shaft mounted on said frame, said actuating shafts and adjusting screws being provided with coactin'g beveled gears whereby the screws are simultaneously actuated to adjust the beams, and independent means for raising and lowering the plow.
5. In a plow, the combination with a running gear frame, of oppositely disposed plows provided with beams, draft bars connected to the plow beams, adjusting screws for the front ends of the plow beams whereby they may be raised and lowered, and means for simultaneously adjusting said screws.
6. In a plow, the combination with a running gear frame, of oppositely disposed plows provided with beams, draft bars connected to the plow beams, and means for simultaneously raising and lowering the front ends of the beams to regulate the depth of the furrow.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
