INVENTOR HUGH G. MACWILJJAM COL Mal/@1- ATTORNEY THB COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH co, WASHINGTON, n. c.
HUGH e. M'ACWILLIAM, on NEW nocnnnnn, NEW YORK.
' sKA'rn.
. Specification of LettersPatent. Patented Sept. 16,1919.
Application filed April 15, 1919. Serial No. 290,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH G. MAowrL- LIAM, a subject of the King of England, residing at city of New Rochelle, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skates, of which the folwearer without removing his ordinary shoes.
Further objects appear from the specification, and my invention particularly consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, for purposes of illustration, I have shown, as a preferred embodiment, the invention as applied to a skate.
Referring to the figure of the drawing, 1 designates the blade of the skate, to which is secured in the usual manner a toe plate 2 to which may be secured a heavy piece of leather or other suitable substance 3, carrying parts made up of lighter sheets of leather 4: and a strap member 5 or other suitable fastening for holding the toe part of the foot down upon the skate.
In the rear part of the blade there are provided slots 6 and 7 passing through the metal of the blade transversely, and so as to permit longitudinal movement of a pin passing through the slot. The heel plate 8 of the skate is provided with a pair of angular members 9 arranged so as to pass one on each side of the blade 1, and to fit closely to the blade. The members 9 are fastened together by pins 10, some of which pins 10 pass through the slots 6 and 7 and which pins 10 are riveted to hold them in place, and to maintain the angular portions 9 in proper spaced relationship.
At the forward end of the heel plate 8, or the angular members 9 attached to and forming part thereof, there is secured means for drawing the heel plate toward the toe plate comprising sockets 11, the one fastened to the heel plate and the other fastened to the toe plate, and a right and left hand screw 12 working in these sockets so as to draw them together, or spread them apart according to the direction in which the screw 12 is turned.
To the heel plate 8' there is preferably secured a heavy piece of leather or similar material 13 which carries means such as the strap 14 for holding the skate to the heel of the shoe, and may be provided with a part 15 simllar to the upper part of a shoe, which may be laced over the shoe.
l he portion 16 is preferably made quite stiff so that when the heel plate is drawn forward and downward by the action of the right and left hand screw 12 and the pins 10 in the slots 6 and 7 this portion tends to force the shoe into the toe portion and hold it securely in place.
The rearmost slot 6 is preferably made substantially horizontal, so that motion of the pin in this slot is substantially forward and backward; but the slot 7 is preferably made with its forward part horizontal, and with its after part curved upward, so that as the heel plate is pushed back and the pins 10 move backward in the slots 6 and 7, the forward part of the heel plate is raised up, throwing the contrivance for fastening the heel backward so as to allow more room for inserting the foot.
After the toe of the foot has been poked in place under the part 4, the heel is pressed down in place, and the screw 12 is thereupon turned, so as to draw the heel plate toward the toe plate, whereupon the action of the sides of the slot upon the forward pin 10 is such as to draw the forward part of the heel plate down as the heel plate as a whole is drawn forward, thus clamping the foot firmly in place upon the plate.
Having now described my invention, I claim and desire. to secure by United States Letters Patent:
1. Means for clamping a skate comprising a blade having downwardly and forwardly guiding slots formed therein, a heel plate slidable on said blade, parts on said heel plate and passing through said slots, and means for drawing said heel plate forward.
2. Means for clamping a skate comprising a blade, a heel plate slidable on said blade, and means for drawing said heel plate forward, the said blade having slots and said heel plate having parts engaging said slots, said slots being arranged to guide the forward end of said heel plate downward as it is drawn forward.
8. Means for clamping a skate comprising a blade, a toe plate, a heel plate, one of said plates being slidable upon the blade, the blade havin-ggniding slotsformed therein, said slidahle plate having parts engaging said slots, and means for moving said heel and toe plates toward and away from each other, saidslots being arranged to guide one end of said slidable plate downward as the plates are drawn toward each other.
4-. Means for clamping a skate comprising a blade, a toe plate, a heel plate, one of said plates being slidable on the blade, a stiff sole and-heel-pieee attaehed to the toe and heel plates respectively, and means including toe and heel abutments to firmly engage the regular shoe of the wearer.
"Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
