specification.
Thi i11Ve11ti0n relates to loose leaf binders and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient loose leaf binding means by which the covers and leaves are readily detached and attached without manipulation of fastening devices as screws, rods, etc., and the invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is an edge view of a loose'leaf binder embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrating the unlocking action of the cover, one of the covers being shown as folded into wide open position and as detached or about to be attached to the binding post.
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating in plan the hinge members connecting the binding posts and covers.
Figs. 4i and 5 are enlarged detail views of the hinge members, Fig. 4: being in plan, and the body or plate of the female member being broken away and Fig. 5 being an elevation.
Thls loose leaf blnder comprlses, gener ally, covers and leaf binding means, one of the covers and said means having normally interlocked parts arranged to unlockupon folding back of the cover unlock upon an edgewise movement of the cover when in open position.-
1 designates the covers which may be of any suitable form, size and construction.
2 are the leaf binding members which are here shown as posts, each cover and the posts having hinge members which are an ranged to lock and unlock when the covers are swung into open position and upon edgewise movement of the cover.
As here shown, the covers are provided with female hinge members 3 at their binding edges in the form of sockets open at one si "e here sinnvn as the side toward the into open pos1- men, said means being arranged to lock and free edge of the cover, the sockets having transverse slots L in their outer walls which open through the edges ofthe outer walls at the open sides of the sockets; and the posts are provided with heads or balls 5 at their ends and necks 6 connecting the balls and the ioodies of the post, the balls entering the sockets and the necks entering the slots upon edgewise movement of thecover to the right, Fig. 2, when the cover is in open position, and being detachable uponth'e reverse of this movement.
The sockets are provided on plates 7 secured in any suitable manner to the inner faces of the covers at the binding margins thereof and are located directly behind but spaced apart from the binding edges of the covers in order to permit the edgewise movement of the covers to engage and dis engage the sockets 3 from the posts 2, The open sides of the sockets face the binding or rear edgesof the covers. The covers are bound together by a flexible binding member 8 extending around the bound edges of the 'leaves 9 and secured at its opposite margins to the outer faces of the covers so that the hinge members 4: and 5 at opposite ends of the posts are housed or concealed by the binding member 8. a p
In operation, to place leaves on the binding posts, one cover is swung into open posiftion and moved edgewisely forwardly as shown in Fig. 2 and then moved rearwardly to expose the ends of the posts. The leaves can then be placed on or removed from the posts, it being understood that the leaves are provided with suitable perforations for receiving the posts. The cover is then moved into the position shown in Fig. 2 and moved to the rightto interlock the sockets on the balls.
This loose leaf binder is particularly advantageous in that it is readlly operated to remove and replace leaves without manipulating locking devices, as screws; rods, etc.
