"UN 11% s THOMAS HEWITT, or :eninsnron'r, con nnorrcur.
Knsznnss :PnnLooK.
Application filed June 20 To all whom it may concern a Be it known that I, THOMAS HEWITT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have inve ntedcer tain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to padlocks, and particularly to a permutation padlock that may be opened and closed by a person familiar with the combination but cannot be opened by those to whomthe combination is unknown; furthermore, the lock is operable without the use of a key, is composed of few parts, is of simple construction, strong and not liable toget out of order and therefore, is useful out-of-doors where it is. exposed to the weather.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is an elevation of the lock with one side removed, showing the interior mechanism.
Fig. 2, is an elevation of one edge of the padlock as seen from the left of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings 10 indicates thecasing of the padlock which as shown may be made of two similar parts, centrally divided and made of cast or pressed metal as desired. Each part 11 and 12 of the casing is provided at one side or edge with an opening 13 at the top of which opening is a depend- :ing curtain 14: having a narrow opening 15 therein for a purpose to be described later.
The two parts of the casing 10 are securely connected by rivets 16 and pivoted within the casing on a cross shaft 17 are three disks 18, 19 and 20, said disks being counterparts of each other and so positioned that a portion of their periphery projects through the opening 13 in position for convenient manipulation. Each disk has its peripheral edge provided with a series of numbers as. shown and a notch 21 formed at any point therein. Projecting from the periphery of each disk is a pin 22 seated in a recess, the positions of which may also be changed to prevent the notches being alined by unauthorized per- Specification of Letters latent.

sons by providing a number of recesses in the: periphery of each disk. a
At theolosed side of the lock case 10 is pivotally mounted an upright lever23, the pivot 24L passing through its lowerend to c'onnectthe same to the case, while its upper end has on the rear siclea notch 25, adapted to be engaged by ahook 26 on the end of a semi-circular shackle 27 pivoted at its other endat 28 between cars 29 projecting upwardly fromthe top of the two parts of the casing 10. 11A lug 30 projects fromthe side of the lever 23 toward the disks 18, 19 and 20 and isadapted to engage the notches 21 111 said disks when they are in alinement and opposite said lug. A spring 31 is mounted in the casing to bear against the lever 23 and press the same away from the disks so as to hold its upper end in engagement with the hook on the shackle 27. A push button 32 is seated in a sleeve 33' formed in the rear side of the casing 10 and is adapted to be moved longitudinally and press upon the lever 23 to swing the same toward the disks and disengage the upper end of said lever from the shackle. To prevent said button 32 from being forced outwardly there is a head 34 formed on its inner end that bears against the inner end of the sleeve 33, when in its outermost position, and thus pre vents the same from being lost.
The padlock as shown in Fig. 1 is locked and may be unlocked by rotating the disks until the numbers on the peripheries thereof as seen through the opening 15 form a combination which will indicate that the notches 21 in each disk are in alinement and opposite the lug 30 on the lever 23. Upon pressing the button 32 the lever will swing toward the disks, the lug 30 entering the notches therein and the hook 26 disengaged from the notch 25. The shackle 27 may then be raised. After the shackle has been again closed, its hooked end becomes engaged with the notch 25 in the lever 23 to hold the shackle, the disks when turned will throw the notches 2-1 out of alinement, and until the numbers on their edges are seen through the window 15 in proper order, it will be impossible to open the padlock. It will be seen that owing to the provision of the pins. 22, complete rotation of the disks is prevented, and in this manner a person unfamiliar with the lock will be confused and preoccupied in attempting to strike the combination by adjusting the disks with reference to their stopping points when limited by engagement of the pins with the lug 30 or a part of the casing. The pins may furthermore be arranged at different points around the peripheries of the disk to confuse the person unfamiliarwith the look and who makes a second attempt to open the lock after an interval between his first attempt.
I claim:
1. In a padlock, a casing having one end wall cut away, an extension ofsaid wall forming a curtain, the same having an observation opening, a plurality of disks mounted in the casing and having a, segment thereof projecting through the opening of the casing whereby the peripheries of said disks are visible through the opening in the curtain, a shackle, and means controllable by the disks for locking the shackle.
2. In a padlock, a casing having an open- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ing in one wall thereof, a plurality of disks each having a peripheral notch and being rotatably mounted in said casing, a radial pin on each disk and projecting from the periphery thereof, a shackle, a pivoted looking bolt to engage the shackle, a lug on the bolt to enter the notches of the disk when the same are alined, said disks having a sog- THOMAS HEWITT.
