hls invention relates to window sashes, and the primary ob ect of my invention 1s to furnish a window frame with hingedlyconnected window sashes and retaining devices which will permit of either of the sashes open position for cleanpurposes, or all of the sashes removed for repair or cleaning purposes. Such sashes permit of the window panes and sash rails being cleaned without danger of a person falling out of the window and since one or more of the sashes can be belng swung to an opened, a desired degree of ventilation can be obtained for a compartment havingwindow sashes in accordance with my invention.

Another object of my invention is to furnish a window frame with removable sashes and novel retaining members for holding the sashes normally in the window frame. The retaining mem adjusted so as to safely hold the plurality of sashes within the frame.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a window frame and detachable sashes therefor, the latter consisting of parts that are inexgnsive to manufacture, durable and lfillfillly e cient for the purposes above speci- The above and other objects are attained by a mechanical construction which will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein a Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame provided with a plurality of sashes in accordance with my invention;

In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 denotes a window frame provided with stiles 60 2, and a retaining stri or bead 3, saidretaiiimg strip or bead being. at the outer edges of the'stiles 2 so as to provide an abutment for sashes 4, 5 and6, the sashes 4 and 5 being practically the same smaller than the sashes 4 and 5 in the upper end of the windo frame 1. The'sashes'4, 5 and 6 are hingedf; connected 7, thus permitting of the parallelism with the intermediate sash 5 or the upper sash ti swung downwardly relative to the intermediate sash 5. It is alsopossible to swing thesashes 5 and 6 inwardly when the lower sash 4 is held, or as will hereinafter appear, to completely remove all of .the sashes. The lower rail 8,0f the lower sash 4 has a conventional form of latch 9 adapted to engage in a keeper plate 10 centrally of the sill so 11 of the wlndow frame 1, and the top or meeting rail -12 of said lower sash has its ends recessed, as at 13, so as to receive studs 14, carried by the stiles 2 0f. the window frame. -The studs 14 the opening of the lower sash 4, and said studs engage in similar recesses in the ends of the lower rail 15 of the intermediate sash 5, said lower sash 4 is in an open position.

and said screen will .prevent flies and other insects from entering a compartment pro vided with a window frame and sashes in accordance with my invention.

From the foregoing it will beobserved that all of the window sashes can be readily removed from the window frame when it is desired to clean the window panes or repair said sashes, consequently lives are not in dangerby leaning on to the window frame 5 in order to clean the outside of the sashes.

Withthe sashes fitting against the frame strips or beads and so held by turn bolts or retaining members, it is practically impossible for the elements orforeign matter to pass through the window frame, and the manner in which the' sashes are locked in-a' closed position renders the window burglar proof. With the frame and sashes constructed of sheet metal and wire glass the entire structure is fire proof, but sashes made of wood and in accordance with my said sash at aninvention can be installed in ordinary window frames by simply equi ping, said frames with the retaimng mem ers.

Furthermore the manner of locking the sashes precludes rattling, yet permitting of any desired degree of ventilation at the top or bottom of t e window frame.

It is thought that the utilityof my invention will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated. a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall withinthe scope of the appended claim. What I claim is The combination witha window frame,

and stiles therein, of lower, intermediate and upper window sashes hingedly connected together and adapted to be bodily removed from said window frame, studs carried by said stiles between the lower and intermediate sashes, a turn bolt carried by said window frame adapted to retain the upper sash in a closed position, and a latch carried by the lower sash adapted to engagein said window frame and retain the lower sash in a closed position.
