MM? & ATTORNEY ARTHUR BARING-GOULD, 0F PLAGERVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
SHIP PROPULSION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1919.
Application filed April 29, 1918. Serial No. 231,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BAKING- GoULn, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain, residing at Placervi le, in the county of Eldorado and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ship Propulsion; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in means for propellin ships of all types through the water. This is now commonly done by a small screw propeller arranged at the stern of the ship. By my improved invention, I aim to augment this system of propulsion by having a series of elongated screw propellers arranged along the entire keel of the ship and driving them with a worm drive so as to have no lost motion or undue vibration or noise.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These ob ects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boat showing my improved propellers thereon.
Fig. 2is a sectional view of the boat showing the driving means for my improved propellers.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference marked thereon, the numeral 1 designates the ship or boat, which may be of any type desired.
My invention consists of approximately three elongated screw propellers 2, 3 and 4 arranged end to end along the keel of the boat, such propellers havin suitable bearings within housings 5 at w ich points they are provided with pinions 6. Each pinion 6 intermcshes with worm gears 7 and 8 on shafts 9 and 10 which project into the hull of the boat. On the opposite ends of the the shafts 9 and 10 are beveled gears 11 and 12 which intermesh with beveled gears 13 and 14 on shafts l5 and 16.
The numeral 17 designates the main driving shaft for all of the propellers which in turn drive worm cars 18 meshing with pinions 19 on stub shafts 20. Each stub shaft is arranged to be placed into or out of driving relation with the shafts 1.5 and 16 by means of suitable clutches 21 and 22 for impartin forward or reverse motion to the propel ers 2, 3 and 4.
For steering the boat, the central propeller may be driven in one direction and either of the others in the opposite direction, which will cause the boat to pivot. This feature will be especially advantageous in a time of War when it is desirous of having the ship make a quick turn to avoid being struck by torpedoes.
It will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that m improved elongated screw propellers will, riven as they are by worm driving connections, impart a smooth, swift,
easy gliding motion to the boat or ship, enabling the same to make much greater speed through the water with a relatlve minimum amount of vibration of tossing on the Waves of the water.
From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail resent and preferred construction of the 'evice, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a ship, having a plurality of elongated ropellers placed in a line beneath the keel t ereof, of a common drive means for all the propellers and independent means for each propeller whereby the same may be stopped or reversed, such means including a longitudinal power driven shaft common to all the propellers, a transverse shaft for each propeller in driving relation with the power shaft, a pair of vertical shafts arranged in reverse driving reshafts and start the other to reverse the di- 10 lation with the propeller from the cor reotion of motion of the propeller. p nd ng t ans e s aft e elem}; & the In te ny w oi l efiix my Signature transverse shaft for each vertiefil s%aft and in presence of two witnesses.
