Be it knownwthat we, WILEIAM C. Mousse and JOHN A. SPEAKMAN, citizens of the United States, residing New I-Ioll.and,in the county of Pickaway, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Stock Restraining and Dipping Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.

This invention is an improvement in apparatus utilized in the care of live stock and has particular reference to a combined re straining and dipping device.

An object of the invention is toprovide an improved device of simple and inexpensive construction including means for ringing, altering, washing the stock and removing the horns of cattle.

The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expres sions, one of which, for thepurposeof illus-- trating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevationof the device constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the restraining device or trap is shown in what is now believed to be its preferred form and consists of a concrete base 10 upon which is mounted the longitudinal and transverse sills 11 and 12 secured in position by means of bolts 13. When a hog is being restrained, a yoke member 26 is extended transversely of the lower ends of the clamping member 19 and is provided with an opening 27 which receives therein a pin 28 whereby a lateral movement of the member 26 is prevented. In removing the horns of stock a nose fastening member 29 is employed and is also provided in its lower edge portion with an opening 30 for receiving the said pin 28 and said member 29 is provided with an opening 31. In use, the member 29 is substituted for the member 26, shown in Fig. 5, the pin 28 passing through the perforation 30 in the member 29. When the member 29 has been so positioned, gripping tongs, such as are used for grasping the noses of animals may be entered through the 3 close to the member 29 by withdrawing the tongs through the opening 31. The device for altering the stock comprises a supporting or strapping member 32 having a number of slots 33 therein for receiving the straps 34 which extend through theslots 35 formed in the sides of the restraining device.

Arranged at the entrance end of the restraining device is a chute 36 through which the stock passes before entering the device and havin at its inner end an incline 37 which lea s upwardly to the bottom of said device. WVhat is claimed is The combination with a trough of an apparatus of the character described, comprising a frame forming a restraining device and having a side adapted to be opened and closed, a vertically swinging platform mounted in the lower portion of the frame, and adapted at one end to lower into the trough, a lever pivoted to the frame, a latch member mounted on the frame beneath the lowering end of the platform and normally Locking the same against lowering movement, connection between the latch member and the lever, means at one end of the frame to clamp an animal within the restraining device, a balancing weight carried by the platform remote from the lowering end thereof to normally hold the same in horizontal position, and means for fastening the frame to the walls of the trough.
