Description
A. JACQUOT.
v BELT LACING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY7| 1919.
Patented Sept. 2, 1919.
1 OFFICE.
ANDREW JACQUOT, or sz-rnnromr, inane.
To all whom it may concern. 1
Be it known that I, ANDREW JAoQUo'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandpoint, in the county of Bonner and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful lmproven'ients in Belt-LacingTools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination tool, and has for one of its objects the pro vision of means whereby a piece, of leather maybe cut into strips of various widths, such as belt lacings, etc.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe tool.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the body provided with an open-ended slot 2, one
marginal edge of which is provided with a scale 52 graduated in inches and fractions thereof.
The face of the body at one side of the slot 2 is provided with a dovetailed groove 3 for the reception of a dovetailed slide-bar 4, the latter having at its lower end an integral enlargement 5 into which is secured,
as at 6, the knife-blade 7 At the opposite side of the slot 2 the body is formed with a dovetailed groove 8 to receive a dovetailed slide-bar or plate 9 depression 10.
These slide-bars 1- and 9 constitute gages, the former for the cutting of strips into such widths as correspond with the distance of the knife-blade from the bottom of the slot 2, and the latter to be adjusted according to the thickness of the leather to be cut into strips or laces.
Each of these slide-bars 4 and 9 is slotted, as at 11, for the passage of the stems of fastening means 12.
Extending from the lower end of the body is a threaded boss 13 terminating in a needle 1 1.
Threaded upon the boss 13 is a handle 15 hollowed out to a depth suflicient to accommodate the needle 14:, and said handle is bifurcated at its lower end for the reception of an awl 16 pivoted at 17 and which is held in open or closed position by the spring bar 18,
Assuming that the two ends of a belt are Specification of Letters Patent.

to be laced together-the first step in the operation will be to use the tool as a lace cutter. This is done by moving the gage slide 9 to bear against one face of the leather contained within the slot 2, the edges of the leather abutting the knife-blade 7, and then setting the blade at such distance from the bottom ofthe slot to such point onthe scale aswould give the desired width of lace to be out. It will be obvious tliatthe movement of the tool along the length of the leather will result in the cutting of a strip or lace of the desired width. This operation is repeated until sufficient lace is obtained for the purpose in view.
The operator next swings out from the handle the awl 16 which will be held in alinenientwith the handle 15 by the spring bar 18. In this position the punching and reaming of holes in the two ends of the belt is quickly and easily done.
The next step is to remove the handle from the body and with needle 14: the lace is readily drawn through the holes of the belt ends.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. A device of the character described comprising a body provided with a slot eX- tending from one end thereof, a groove extending from said slot to an adjacent end of the'body, a plate movably mounted within said gro ove, a second groove parallel with and adjacent said slot, a lmife-carrying plate movably mounted within said second groove, and a handle attached to said body.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body provided with a slot extending from one end thereof, a groove parallel with said slot, a plate movable in said groove, a knife-blade secured to said plate, and means to secure said plate within ghrzl groove, and a handle attached to said 3. A device of the character described comprising a body provided with a slot eX- tending from one end thereof, a plate movably mounted upon said body and adapted to be moved across said slot, a plate carrying a knife-blade, movably mounted and in 1 parallel relation With the aforesaid slot, and
means to hold said slotted plate in adjusted position, a plate movably mounted upon said body adapted to intercept the slot in the body, and a handle secured to said body.
5. A device of the character described comprising a body having a slot opening througlran end thereof, a support adjustably mounted upon one side of the body in a plane parallel with the slot, a knife'blade carried by said support and projecting across one side of the slot and arranged edgewisein a plane at right angles thereto, and means for securingsaid support in ad justed position. f
6. A device of the character described comprising a body having a slot opening through an end thereof, a support upon the body at one side of the slot and adjustable in a plane parallel therewith, a knife blade carried by said support and extending across L the slot in a plane edgewise at right angles thereto, and means upon the body for varying the Width of the slot.
7. A device of the character described comprising a body having a slot extending through an end thereof, a support upon the body at one side of the slot and adjustable in a plane parallel With the slot, a knife blade carried by said support and projectingacross the slot edgewise in a plane at right angles thereto, and a member upon the body adjustable transversely of the slot for regulating the Width thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
