To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. GEY, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,fhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie- Molds, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as plastic block and earthenware apparatus and more particularly relates to a tie mold.
lit is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character composed of a plurality of sections with which coact improved means for removably maintaining the sections in extended or set up position and at the same time permitsof thecollapsing of the sectionswhen desired. v A j A More particularly the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character embodying a flanged base, sloping side pieces pivoted, to the flanged portions of the base and end pieces detachably secured to the end edges of the side pieces while acting in conjunction with the side pieces is improved meansifor releasably clamping or fastening the same in properly spaced relation, said means also forming a part of themeans for pivotally connecting the side pieces to the base.
It is a more specific object of this inven tion to providea device of the above mentioned character wherein the several sections are of improved construction and are designed so that a tie formed thereby will be suitably reinforced at points where the greatest strain occurs.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a, device of the above mentioned character wherein the number of parts are comparatively few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efiiciency high.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the invention. l

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided an improvedmold whlch consists of an; elongated relatively fiat base 1 of sheet metal,

For the purpose of closing the ends of themold improved end plates 22 are employed the lower portions being shaped to conform .to the end contour of the base and flanges 2 while the sides are sloped to correspond to the curvature, of the sloping side pieces 3 and in addition these plates are provided near the sloping sides with openings which are passed about the longitudinally projecting threaded portion 23 of fastening devices 2 1, the inner terminals of which'are anchored as by suitable rivets 25 to the outer sloping surfaces of the side pieces as indicated in Fig. 2. Ooacting with .the fastening devices are suitable clamping elements such as nuts 26 which are engaged about the threaded portion subsequentt'o the engagement of the end plates 22 therewith and serve to. removably clamp the end plates in position. In this connection it is to be understood that in addition to closing the ends of the mold, the end plates are fastened so as to brace the side pieces and" increase the rigidity of the mold when assembled.
The upper surface of the base is provided near its respective extremities with pairs of longitudinally alining upright pins or studs 27 over which are adapted to be placed bolts shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, said bolts being adapted to form a part of the tie which in turn is formed by the mold, as is apparent.
In using the mold, assuming that it is in a knocked-down form, the side pieces 3 are swung upwardly and inwardly until the lower edges contact with the upper surface of the base and until the cutaway or shouldered portions 10 seat on the flanges, the ears 12 and brackets 13 and the pins 14 forming the pivotal connecting means. When in an upright position the bars 18 are swung about their pivots 20 so that the looped ends 21 will engage the opposed lugs 16 while finally the end plates 22 are fitted over the threaded portions 23 of the fastening devices 24 and the nuts 26 subsequently applied to clamp the end plates in position, the assembled mold being clearly shown in Fig. 2. In this connection it is to be observed that the flanges 2 also act as a means for bracing the lower or inner portions of the side pieces It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is 74' entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent. However, it may be stated that by the provision of the outwardly pressed portion 4 having the recesses 5 therein provide the reinforcing enlargements of a tie as set forth in my co-pending application.
Still further embodiments of the invention than those herein especially defined may be resorted to as conditions or preference may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the character described including a base, flanges at the sides thereof, side pieces, bracing angles secured vertically of the side pieces, means for swingably con- 9r necting the inner ends of the bracing angles to the flanges, clamping bars swingably connected to the upper terminals of certain of the bracing angles and removably engaged with the opposed bracing angles, and end plates removably clamped against the end edges of the side pieces and the base.
2. A device of the character described including a base, side pieces swingably connected to the sides thereof, means for re- 105 leasably holding the side pieces in properly spaced relation, fasteners secured to the outer faces of the side pieces and having their threaded portions extended longitudinally of the end edges thereof, end plates 110 having openings for engagement about the threaded portions of the fasteners, and clamping elements adjustably mounted on the threaded portions of the fasteners for releasably clamping the end plates against 5 the end edges of the base and the side pieces.
3. A device of the character described including a base, vertical flanges formed at opposite sides thereof, side pieces having their main portions sloped correspondingly 20 and their inner portions straight for disposition against the inner faces of the flanges, bracing angles of a T-shaped configuration in cross section havin their wing portions secured to the outer faces of the 125 side pieces and arranged vertically thereof, the inner portions of the bracing angles beingofiset and having the wing portions cut away to leave ears, brackets carried by the outer faces of the flanges, means for 130 pivoting the ears to the brackets, the up per portions of the bracing angles being arranged above the upper edges of the side pieces and cutaway to leave ears on certain of the bracing angles, and lugs on the remaining bracing angles which are opposed to the ears, clamping bars having ad]acent ends pivoted to the upper ears in the opposite ends designed to form loops for removable engagement With the opposed lugs, 10 and end plates removably clamped against the end edges of the side pieces.
