COMBINED GAS AND STEAM GENERATOR.

Be it' known that we, ALVIN J. BASSETT. and JOHN E. SHARP, both citizens of the' United .States, and residents of Milwaukee, in'the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new. and
useful Improvements in Combined Gas and .Steam Generators; and we do hereby deoxact description thereof.
Our invention relates to certain new and clare that the following is a full, clear, and
useful improvements in gas producers, of
that type exemplified in Letters Patent No. 1062721, granted to W. F. Luick and A..J. Bassett, May 27, 1913.
It is primarily the object of our inven tion to so improve the structure of the gas generating chamber so as to provide for the utilization of excess heat energy for producing steam or hot water as may be des red "It is further an object of our invention to provide means for initially heating the water prior-to its entrance to the jacket surrounding the gas generator without de tracting'from the efliciency of the device.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the -'descript1on proceeds, our invent on resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of accompanymg drawings, the numeral 1 rep'- parts substantially as hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings we have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment ofour invention constructed according to the best mode we have so far devised for the practical application of the rinciples thereof, in which: r The drawing illustrates a sectional elevation of a complete gas 1producing plant embodying the features 0 our invention with par-tsbroken away and parts in section to better show certain structural features.

A circular and inwardly tapered fuel pot 1O whichis forined by two sections having their inner ends" flanged and engaging' the shelf 01' bracket 11 fixed to the inner that is fitted to corresponding apertures in the covers 5 and 8, the gas delivery flue being in turn connected to the head of a heating drum 17. A T-section 18 of the flue has one branch that communicates with the drum bottom and another branch 19 that is coupled to a'bonnet 20, the third/branch being connected with extension 15' which terminates in a catch-basin 21, sealed with y a column of water same as bonnet 20, and provided with an overflow 22 to permit exit therefromof sediment.
The bonnet 20 is mounted in an open ended trap 23 with which it communicates by means of end ports 24:, the lower end of the bonnet being sealed by a column of water. This water column is maintained at predetermined normal height under control of a waste or overflow pipe 24, water being supplied to the trap 23 from a drain pipe 25 that communicates with said tra and the bottom water chamber 26 of a cylinder 27, and has intermediate its ends a three-way valve 28 from which leads a drain 28.

Passing through the steamdome 9 is a passage 37 connecting the fuel magazine 38,
disposed above said steam dome, with the gas generator chamber, the same being provided with a cap closure and bottom that is controlled by gravity closingvalve 39 as shown, whereby fuel charges are supplied to the pot below. The cap, 8 is provided with suitable insulatingmaterial 40 such as asbestos and the like for retaining the heatin the steam chamber, and the chamber 7 is interrupted by a suitable thimble 41 that constitutes a poke hole having an adjustable cover .41 to permit the insertion therethrough of a poker (not shown) inorder to settle the fuel bed or break clinkerswhich may-form in the fuel pot. In order to provide a forced draft for thegenerator, an inlet 42 is provided terminating beneath the central portion of the grate and having coupled with its outer end a T-joint 43 having one branch connected with an air inlet- 44 from any suitable blower (not shown) and its other end communicating with a steam jet 45. r
The heating drum 17 has mounted therein near each end thereof a disk or plate 46 having secured therein the ends of tubes or fines 47 which connect the ends. of said drum and permits the uninterrupted passage therethrough of the gas.
