Description

I N. BURAS.
HAMMER.
APPLICATION men mu. l6. l9l9.
"1,314,465. Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
NORBERT BURAS, OF ZBOOTHVILLE, LOUISIANA.
HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application filed January 16, 1919. Serial No. 271,373.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NORBERT BURAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boothville, in the parish of Plaquemines and State of.Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to hammers and the like; and more particularly to-hammers such as are employed in the oyster shucking industry, and it contemplates the provision in a device of the character set forth of a guard or attachment that will in no way prevent the ready and eflicient manipulation of the hammer but will preclude the liability of shell portions flying up into the oyster shuckers eye, as in the case with hammers at present in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hammer attachment that will not prevent the operator from seeing at all times the oyster he is endeavoring to shuck.
Other objects and characteristics of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims whenthe same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of the handle and a front elevation of the head of my novel hammer.
Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the disk or attachment.
Fig. 3, is a side elevation showing the parts assembled and their working p0sitions.
Fig. 4, is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4:4: of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section taken through the head of my novel hammer as illustrating exactly how the disk is retained in the head and handle thereof.
The handle 1, of my novel device may be of wood or other suitable material and at one end thereof, it is provided with a slot or channel 2, said slot extending the full width of said handle.
The head 3 of my novel device may be of the construction illustrated or of any construction compatible with my invention and is provided at 4, with opening for the in sertion of the handle 1, and at each side and at a point adjacent the center of the opening'4 the head is provided with a slot or channel 5.
My novel attachment 6, is preferably circular in form and for the purpose of enabling the operator to at all times see what he is doing, and at the same time affording proper protection to the eyes, said disk is constructed of celluloid, mica or other transparent material.
I would have it understood, however, that I do not wish to limit my device to transparent material as in the future practice of the device it may be desirable to construct the same of tin or like material, especially as in the case of an efficient shucker to whom it is not absolutely incumbent upon, to see the work in hand; said disk 6, however is of a thickness to enable it to receive the slot 2, of the handle and 5 of the head, and at 7 the disk is provided with an opening 01' passage for the head 3.
When it is desired to employ my novel protective device, the head 3 of the hammer is passed through the opening 7 of disk 6 with slot 3 away from the center of said disk. The slot 5 then positioned so as to straddle the rim at the point 8. The handle 1 is then positioned so that its slot or channel will straddle the disk first at the point 9. The handle is then pushed forward so that its forward end will pass through the opening 4 of the head 3. The handle should be pushed forwardly until the rim at 8, and the handle 1 are flush.
It will readily be seen that the disk is enveloped from the point 8 to point 9 by the channel of the handle, thereby preventing the disk from slipping and at all times keeping the disk rigid with respect to the head.
The device will be appreciated as one of novel construction and capable of being produced at a nominal cost and in no way detracts from, but on the other hand, greatly enhances the value of the hammer.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an attachment for hammers the combination of a head having an opening therethrough, a slot extending to a slight extent at each side of said opening, a handle having a slot extending from one end thereof to a point slightly below the center of the said head and channels provided in said head and handle for rigid retention of said disk;
, 15 Intestimony whereof I have'hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
hs NORBERT BURAS.
