Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom z't may oonoem Be it known that I, GEORGE MooRE, a citizen ofwthe--United States, residing in the city of ErieV and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvelmente in Vises, of which the following is a vise, 'one which may be quickly and positively adjusted to the work with the least loss of time.
Another object is to produce such a Vise. in a comparatively simple form, and which Will be practical and efficient in use.
With these objects in view, attention is called to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation, showing the vise properly mounted upon a work-bench Fig. 2, a detail of the outer jaw, showing the method of pivotally mounting same at the end of the guide bar;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the purpose of my invention is to produce a vise, the jaws of which may be instantly adjusted against the work by merely sliding the guide bar and outer jaw inwardly until the outer jaw comes in contact against the Work.
To accomplish this object, I provide a guide-bar 1 which is slidingly mounted within theguide-ways 2, said guide-ways being in turn rigidly mounted and properly spaced beneath the work bench 3. The guide bar 1 is provided on its upper surface with one or more angular recesses 4, said angular recesses being formed with the sides 5 perpendicular to the axis ofthe guide bar 1., and wlth the sides 6 sloping forwardly from the sides 5. Complementary to this guide bar 1, I provide a lock bar 7, samehaving formed on its under side angular recesses 8 with perpendicular sides 9, and sloping sides 1.0 exactly reversed to the perpendicular sides 5 and sloping. sides 6 formed on the guide bar 1, as aforesaid; and so that the resulting teeth 11 of the lock bar 7 will fit into the recesses 4 of the guide bar 1 and Will abut against the reversed teeth 12 formed on the guide bar 1. Along the upper side of the lock bar 7, I cut a series of lock notches 13, which may be made of any suitable size and shape, depending upon the character of work the vise is to perform; that is to say, whether it is to be used as a machinisfis vise, or a woodworker7s vise, or otherwise. These lock notches 13 correspond to a complementary series of notches 14 cut on the lower side of the lock plate 15. The recesses 4 and 8 form vertical shoulders and inclined bottom faces and the shoulders are of a height greater than the height of the shoulders or projections formed by the notches 13 and 14, so that a longitudinal movement of the looking bar incident to an operation of the vise tightening means will carry the notches 13 and 14 into and out of engagement with each other without disengaging the teeth formed by the recesses 4 and 8. This lock plate 15 1s screwed or otherwise securedto the under side of the work bench 3, and said lock plate 15 carries at its outer end the rigidly mounted inner jaw 16. The lock bar 7 is bored longitudinally and screw-4 threaded as shown at 30, so as to'engage the screw threads 31 formed on the screw bar 28. Upon the outer end of the guide bar 1, I pivotally mount the outer jaw 17.
In the Construction shown, the outer jaw 17 is formed with a slot 18 cut through the lower side thereof, and adapted to set over the end of the guide bar 1, and a pivot pin 19 is set through the outer jaw 17, and passes through the end of the guide bar 1, thus giving the outer jaw 17 the pivotal connection with the guide bar 1 referred to.l A stop pin 20 may be set in the outer end of the guide bar 1 to 'prevent the outer jaw from Swinging too far outwardly. The outer jaw 17 is likewise pierced with the screw bar hole 21 to admit the outer end -of the screw bar 28, and the outer face of ,mounted the lever cap 24:, same being formed with an interior thread 25 to correspond to the thread 23, as aforesaid. Through the lever cap 24 is formed a hole 26 through which is passed thel lever 27.
In operation, it will be noted that with the vise properly mounted upon the work bench as described, the outer jaw 17 may be slid back against the work 29 located between the two jaws, 'by one motion of the hand, after which the lever 27 being turned up, the result is to force the lock bar 7 veyrtically upward against the lock plate 15, and so that the teeth 11 interlock with the teeth 12, thereby looking the look bar 7 firmly in place, after which as the lever 27 is further turned, the outer jaw 17 is forced down against the work 29, and
looks the work in position.
It will be seen that I have here provided a simple, practical and eflioient vise for the purpose described, and one wh1ch may be readily and quickly adjusted in use.
WhileI have herein described a certain specific manner and method of construoting the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended olaims.
VVhat I claim to be new and patentable is:
1. A vise for quick adjustment comprising a slidable 'bar provided at its upper face with recesses lforming shoulders and inclined faces, means for guiding the slidable bar, a fixed looking member locatedabove and in spaced relation with the slidable bar and provided at its lower face with notohes, a movable jaw carried by the slidable member, a movable looking member operating between the slidable bar and the fixed looking member and provided at its lower face With recesses corresponding With the recesses of the slidable bar, said movable looking member being also provided at its upper face With notohes corresponding with the notohes of the fixed looking member, the inclined' faces formed by the recesses pernitting the movable looking member to engage with and disengage from the fixed looking member when the said movable looking member is moved longi'tudina-lly of the slidable member and adjusting means connecting the said jaw with the movable looking member and taler- 1 adapted to successively operate the said'movable looking member and also the movable jaw, Q
