ROSARIO GEiIOVESE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB F CHE-HALF 1'0 MORRIS BARBER,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
may AJEEOZPLAIN'E.
Application filed February 19; 1919. Serial No. 278,009.
To all whom it maiconcem:
Be it known t at I, ROSARIO GENovesE, a citizen of the United States, and residm l at New York, in the county of New Yorr and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in T03 Aero lanes, of which the following is a speci cation,
skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to toy aeroplanes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class particularly adapted to operate on the floor, or on the ground; and a further object being to pro vide a device of the class specified which will be amusing and entertaining both to young and old. 7
The invention -is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawin forms a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and inwhich:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved toy device;
Fig. 2 a section on 1; and,
Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
My improved toy device comprises a winged body portion a constructed to represent in form the body portion of an ordinary aeroplane and composed of any suitable material and provided with a backwardly directed tail member a of the usual form, and beneath which is mounted an antifriction wheel I) which is adapted to rest on the floor and remove the friction which would otherwise result if the tail member a rested directly on the floor.
of the body portion a. are hangers o in which are mountthe line 2-2 of Fig.
Under the front end part ed an axle (I provided with wheels 6, and mounted in the said body portion over the hangers a is a spring power mechanism 3 mounted 1n a casing consisting of side plates in the top portion of whichis moun i a spring 9 provided with a shaft g -havi such as will enable those.
a forwardly directed handle member p provided with a crank gby which thespring' 9 may be wound up.
Beneath the spring 9 is a shaft hwhich projects backwardly of the casing and is provided with a pulley passed a drive belt '1, or similar .device which is also passed around-a central pulley j on the axle A propeller shaft in; is mounted in the front part of the body ortion a and passes through the bottom 0 t 1e power casing and 15 provided with an elongated pinion m,
which meshes with a gear at on the shaft h and a brake 1pawl 0 is pivoted to one of the plates f oft to operate in connection with thepinion m and is'held out of engagement with said pinion by friction and the shaft h is rovided w1th an elongated pinion n w ich meshes with a gear a on the shaft 9 of the m spring g.
The propeller shaft is is provided with a ropellcr k and is also preferably provic ed with a governor device It of any suitable construction, and the operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
In placingthe device in operation, all that is necessary 15 to wind up the spring g, set
the device on the floor and raise the nose of the brake pawl 0 out of engagement with the pinion m'by means of the hand 0" of said brake pawl. This will throw the ower mechanism into operation and the wheels 6 will be rapidly turned and the device! will travel ra ldly over thevfloor in any direction in w ich it is turned. Instead of operating the device, as above described, it may be placed on the floor after operating the bra to device 0, and while I have shown a (1 described details of construction by whi h my invention ma be carried into effect, th
invention is not imited to such device, an
changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended clalms, without departing from the it over which is 55 e power casing'and is adapted 65 what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. A toy body portion having front transverse planes and a, rear transverse tail plane,"'hangers- V suspended from the front part of the body plcmental shaft, another pulle wheels, and a belt passed around said pulleys operate both of sai shafts, a
portion, an axle mounted in said hangers, wheels mounted on said axle, a spring power mechanism mounted in the body portion above said hangers and provided with a forwardly directed propeller shaft which is driven by said.power mechanism, and another shaft operated-by said power mechanism and in operative connection with said axle to rotate the wheels thereof to move the device over a surface.
2, A toy aeroplane device comprising a main elongated. body portion, transverse front plane members secured to the body portion at, a predetermined distance from the front ,end thereof and a transverse tail plane at the'back of said bodyortion, a roller mounted in the rear end 0 the main body ortion, hangers suspended from the opposite sides of the main body portion'beneath the front transverse dplanes, a shaft mountedin said hangers an provided with wheels, the front end of the'main body portion being recessed at the top thereof a spring power mechanism mounted in the recessed portion of the body part, said spring power mechanism being provided with a forwardly directed propeller shaft and a rearwardly directed supplemental shaft, a propeller mounted on the front end portion of the propeller shaft, a pulley mounted on the rear end portion of the supmounted centrally of said axle, and a sit passed around said pulleys whereby in the operation of said sprin power mechanism said propeller and sai wheels will be rotated to move the device over a surface.
3. A toy aero 'lane device comprisin a body ortlon ma e in the general form o an aerop ane, wheels suspended from the front end of the body portion, a spring power mechanism mounted in the front end of the bod portion and provided with -'a forward directed dpropeller shaft and a backwa lydirecte supplemental shaft,
means whereby said wer mechanism will propeller mounted on the front end portion 0 peller shaft, a pulley mounted on the rear end portion of the supplemental, shaft, another pulley mounted on the shaft of said whereby the rotation of said'propeller shaft and supplemental shaft will rotate said propeller and said wheels to move the device over a surface.
aeroplane device comprising eV the prolam na 4. A toy aero body ortlon ma e in the neral form 0 aerop ane, wheels suspemf end of the body portion, a spring power mechanisrnmounted in the front end of the body portion andprovided with a forwardly directed propeller shaft and a backwardly (plane device comprising a an ed from thefront directed supplemental shaft, means where by said power mechanism will operate both of said shafts, a propeller mounted on the front end portion of the propeller shaft, .a
pulley mounted'on the rear endportion of the su pleinental shaft, another pulle mounts on the shaft. of said wheels, a be li passed around saidpulleys whereb the rotation of said propeller shaft an 'jsu 1e-.--
mental shaft will rotate said propeller and said wheels to move the device over a surface, and manually operated means on said spring power mechanism for controlling the operation thereof. t
5. A toy aeroplane devicecomlprising a.
body portion made in the genera '-form of an aeroplane, wheels suspended from the front end of the body ort-ion, a spring power mechanism mounts in the front end..'
of the body portion and rovided with a forwardl directed backwardly direct means whereby said operate both of sai shafts, a propeller mounted on the front end portion of the propeller shaft, a pulley mounted on the supplemental shaft,
rear end portioll of the supplemental shaffi another pulley mounted on the shaft of sai wheels, a belt passed around said pulleys whereby the rotation of said ropeller' shaftand supplemental shaft wil rotate said propeller and said wheels to move the device over a surface, and a governor device mounted on the propeller shaft.
owermechanism will repel er shaft and a,
6. A mechanical toy device of the class describedmade in the form of. an aeroplane and eomprisin the front end t ercof a spring power. mechanism mounted in said recess and provided with a forwardly directed propeller shaft, a.
propeller mounted on the free end portion of said shaft, a backwardly directedsupplemental shaft, means whereby said sprin a body portion. recessed at anism mounted in said recess and .provided with a forwardly directed a propeller mounted on the 1propeller shaft,
