UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
v WILLIAM BULMAN, F KIRKDALE, FRANCIS WALTER SMITH, OF LIVERPOOL, AND
WILLIAM JONES, OF SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
Application filed December 24, 1918. Serial No. 268,133.
v To all whom it may concern:
FRANCIS WALTER SMITH,
i county of Lancaster, England, and Southampton, in the county of Hampshire, England, respectively, have invented Improvements in or Connected with Ships-Boats- Launching Tackle or Gear, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to tackle or gearing for handling boats or the like.
, to provide reliable and simple means arv acter,
mit of proper movements of the blocks with relation to each other.
An important object of the invention is ranged between and connecting the blocks of the tackle, to prevent the blocks from turning or twisting, thereby preventing the tackle from fouling.
A, further object of the invention is to provide means of the above mentioned charwhich are sufliciently flexible to per- In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificatlon and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of the spacing bar, showing the block applied thereto, and,
cesses 6, extending longitudinally Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the block.
The numeral 5 designates a spacing bar, which is provided near each end with rethereof. The ends of these recesses are closed while their outer sides and topsare open.
Arranged near each end of the bar 5 is a block 7, comprising spaced plates 8 and 9, connected by bolts 10, 11, 12, 13 and 1 1.
, These bolts carry spacing elements or thimyond the bles 15, as shown.
The bolt 12 .pivotally supports the pulleys 16, over which pass the falls of the rope. The bolt 15 supports a coupling member 17, for connection with the boat or load.
The plates 8 and 9 project upwardly bepulleys 16 for a substantial dis- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the tance, and are provided in these upper portions with transverse openings 18, receiving the end of the bar 5, the tops of these openings being open.
Arranged between the upper ends of the inner plates 9 is a keeper 19, pivoted upon the bolt 10. This keeper is adapted to enter the recess 6 and its downward movement is restricted by a stop 20.
In operation, the ends of the bar 5 be ing within the openings 18 of the blocks 7, prevent them from turning or twisting. The keeper 19 fitting within the recess 5 forms a flexible connection, enabling the bar 5 'to be angularly arranged with relation to the block, whereby one block may be raised or lowered with relation to the.
comprising pulley blocks provided with upwardly projecting portions extending above the same and having transverse openings formed therein, a bar having its end portions arranged in the transverse openings, each end portion being provided with a longitudinal recess, and a pivoted keeper carried by each block and adapted to be moved to a position to project into the recess.
2. A device of the character described, comprising pulley blocks having openings formed therein which have their tops opened, a bar having its end portions projecting into the openings, each end portion being provided with a longitudinal recess having its top opened, and a keeper pivoted to each block for movement into the recess.
In testimony whereof we have signed.our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
