Description
J. F. BRASS.
SPRINKLER HEAD.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 9. I911.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
wmg z To all 'wh om z' t maycmcern a Beit-knownthat I, JOHN Application filed m 9, 1
I F. BnAss, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Downers Grrove, the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful I provements in Sprinkler.
1 Heads, or i which the following-is a specifithe-object thereof is to" provide'a simple,
efiicient and reliable .characterizedmore particularly by the emalso consisting o tiltable members.
"of a sprinkler head embodying my inventhe line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a top plan 1 view of one of the members arm; Fig. 4 a similar view of the other i l j cation.
invention relates to sprinkler heads for automatic fire sprinkler systems and ClGVICB of this kind,"
of a valve support comprising two arms, each of which consists of two members normally held together by fusible solder and onebeing adapted to tilt, and f a link connecting said ployment In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation tion; Fig. 2 a vertical central section on of the upper 5 and 6 side elevations of 7 and 8 top plan views of 9 a cross-section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 2. The sprinkler head comprises as usual if '1 the frame or yoke 1 having a nozzle opening 3 2 normally closed by the valve 3, j j i 4 which, in the present .1 g
a deflector case, is provided with a central screw-threaded stem forming the adjusting screw 5, and a'valve support interposed between this screw and the valve i for the purpose of holding the latter on its arms or levers inner ends an angleto L other withthe screw. E
' nected together a seat.' My invention pertains to the valve support whi h's constructed as follows:
The valve support comprises two similar (pivoted on each other at their extending outwardly at an g each other, one of the arms being in pivotal contact with the valve and the ach arm consists of two members 6 and 7 normally held together by means of fusible solder, the memher 7 being tiltable on the other member a and these two tiltable members being conby a rigid link 8. The
. member 6 comprises a flat or plate portion 5 6 and a right-angled rib i from and running longitudinally of the arm.
6 extending there- The upper arm is provided with a depending pivot edge 6 adapted to fit in the socket Specification of Letters Patent.
A s'rATEs PATENT OFFICE.
.ioriiv'r. BRASS, OEDOWNEIQS enovE, rumors.
g srnmxr-nn-nnann Patented Aug. 19,1919. 917. Serial No. 179,387.- i r 6 of the lower arm. Each tiltable member 7 is bifurcated by reason of the slot 7 extending part way .of the len th thereof whereby such memberis adapte to straddle the rib 6 of the other member. The outer end .of the .member'7 is provided with; a transverse notch 7". adapted to receive the. link 8. 7 When the parts are in their normal positionthevmembers'fi and '7 areheld to-. gether a ainst the strain caused by the screw 5 by fusi 1e solder 7 appliedto the adjacent portions of such members 6 and 7, but when such solder is melted by the heat of a fire the member 7 will tilt and the member 6 being thereby no longer restrained, will fly loose and will be thrown free of the sprinkler head, thereby permitting the valve to be forced from its seat in the usual and well known manner. The link 8 is a rigid link, as distinguished from a fusible link and serves, in conjunction with the fusible solder, to resist the tension exerted by the arms or levers.
I prefer to provide these arms on opposite sides with projections 6 which are adapted to contact the side arms of the yoke when the valve support is swung over to one side or the other, thereby preventing such support from coming into full contact with the yoke, and consequently interfering with the sensitiveness of the head.
. I claim:
1. A sprinkler head comprising a head having a nozzle 0 ening, a valve governing such opening, an a valve support consistin of two similar arms pivoted on each otfier and each including two members, one adapted to tilt on the other but normally restrained by fusible solder, and a link connecting said two tiltable members.
2. A sprinkler head comprising a head having a nozzle opening, a valve governing such opening, and a valve support consistin oftwo similar arms pivoted-on each ot er and each including two members, one adapted to tilt on the other but normally restrained by fusible solder, and a rigid lin connecting said two tiltable members.
3. A sprinkler head comprising a head having a nozzle opening, a valve governing such opening, and a valve support consisting of two similar arms pivoted on each other and each including two members, one adapted to tilt on the other but normally restrained by fusible solder, said arms bein pivoted on each other at their inner ends an r I AS1 pmn g,
