Description
W. LUXMORE.
' C ASTlNG DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 9. l9|8.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
' 7 WILLIAM LuXMoRE, or CHICAGO, .ILALIN'OIS.
Application filed September 9, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Loxuonn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in casting devices. The objects of my invention are to produce a device for sealing the tops of molds, which can be easily manipulated and which does not require any careful attention or observation to insure a sealing contact between the edge of the mold and the sealing cover. Other objects will appear as this description progresses, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawing, in which I have illustrated my device in connection with a mold ordinarily employed for making cast inlays for teeth, the mold and the cover of my improved device being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing, the reference character 1 indicates a cylindrical member which forms the retaining means for the material 2 in which the impression 3 for. receiving the molten metal is received. The construction of these molds and the method of making them are well understood by those skilled in this art, and need not be further described.
My improved casting device comprises the disk-like cover 4 having the downwardly extending flange 5 forming a recess for the reception of moistened fiber 6. At substantially the center of the disk 4 I secure a stud 7, which is in turn secured to the lower end of the coil spring 8. The reference character 9 indicates a handle for manipulating my device, into the lower end of which is inserted a metal rod 10. The lower end of the rod 10 projects beyond the lower end of the handle 9 and is surrounded by the upper end of the coil spring 8, which may be suitably secured thereto or to the handle as by means of a ferrule 11.
In using my improved casting device, the

metal which is to form the casting is placed in the conical depression 12 in the top of the mold, and is melted by the use of a blow -\pipe or any other suitable instrumentality.
In order to force the molten metal through the sprue of the mold, I slightly moisten the fiber 6 in the recess formed in the cover 4:. By then placing the cover over the mold, as shown in the drawing, and exerting pressure upon the handle, the fiber 6 is compressed at all points'of contact with the upper edge of the wall of the receptacle 1 so as to form a perfect seal, and it is immaterial for the maintenance of this seal whether or not the pressure is exerted by the handle in a direction exactly perpendicular to the cover 4. The heat from the molten metal causes the water inthe fiber 6 to be vaporized, and the pressure of this vapor is sufiicient to force the molten metal through the sprue 13 into the impression or cavity 3. I
While I have described my improved casting device in connection with a mold employed for making cast inlays for teeth, it is to be understood that my invention is capable of being used for casting other objects, and my invention is therefore not to be limited except by the scope of the appended claims. It is to be also understood that while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, my invention is not to be limited to these details except as made necessary by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A casting device comprising a cupshaped cover, a handle, and means for flexibly connectingsaid handle with said cover, comprising a coil spring having one end secured to said cup and the other end secured to said handle.
2. A casting device comprising a cover, a handle, and means for flexibly connecting said handle with saidcover, comprising a spring having one end secured to said cup and the other end secured to said handle.
3. A casting device comprising a cupshaped cover, a handle, and means for universally flexibly connecting said handle with In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe said cover. my name this 26th day of August, A. D.
4. The combination With a mold, of a 1918.
cover for said mold, absorptive means se- WILLIAM LUXMORE.
cured to one side of said cover, a handle for Witnesses: t
said cover, and a universally flexible con MARY FAE PETRIE,
nection between said cover and handle. v i EDWIN H. MELONE.
