Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 13, 1917. Serial No. 154,643.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Hrnosunn Honioom, a subject of the Empire of Japan, residing at 41 Q-chome, Tomongai, Taihokujonai, Taihokucho, Taiwan, Japan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Cylindrical Tater-Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vertical cylindrical water-tube boilers in which a boiler shell with a concave endplate is mounted on a furnace shell, and a broad cylindrical combustion chamber being placed with a slight inclination in the bo1ler shell, a number of vertical watertubes are arranged with a slight inclination in the combustion chamber near the central point of the boiler shell, and the said combustion chamber, with a suitable space left in its rear portion, opens by an inclined flue to the furnace, while the said chamber, with a smoke tube provided on its front face, opens to the front face of the boiler shell to communicate with a chimney, and also a certain device is provided so constructed as the hot air generated between the circular wall of the furnace and the furnace shell ejects to the rear space of the combustion chamber to effect perfect combustion.
The objects of this invention are advantageously to arrange numerous watertubes in a vertical boiler shell having a limited space, and to render the combustion of fuel perfect and the conduction of heat effective, and also to promote the circulation of feed water, and further, to make it easy to inspect every part in the boiler, which has hitherto been very inconvenient to do.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a boiler embodying my invention.
Fig 2 is an enlarged end view of the spray nozzle.
The lower part 2 of a cylindrical shell 1 is conical; its diameter is a little increased downward, and its concave end-plate 3 shaped as an inversed dish is removably mounted on a furnace shell 4 which, pro vided with a grate 5, forms a broad furnace.
The cylindrical combustion chamber 6 is placed with a slight inclination in the shell 1, and a number of water-tubes 7 are arranged with a slight inclination between the upper and lower plates of the combustion chamber, with a suitable space left in its rear portion, and an 1ncl1ned flue 8 is provided between the lower-part of the said space and the central part of the end-plate 3, so that the upper portion of the furnace communicates with the combustion chamber, and a smoke tube 9 being provided at the front face of the combustion chamber opens to the front face of the shell, and a smoke box 10 being provided on the said front face of the shell communicates with the chimney 11 direct, or through a side flue suitably formed around the periphery of the shell to utilize the waste heat communicates with the chimney. The combustion chamber 6 is preferably made as large in diameter as the circumstances permit, and an upper corner 6 of the rear part of the said chamber is rounded to leave a space for the circulation of water, and is provided with a suitable number of gusset stays 12 on its external surface so as to suspend the combustion chamber in the shell. Some of the water-tubes 7, say, tubes 7 7 are provided as stay tubes against the strain of the upper and lower plates of the combustion chamber.
Above thegrate, a circular wall 13 is provided, and an annular space 14: is formed between the outer circumference of the wall 13 and the inner circumference of the furnace shell 4, and a current of hot air generating in the annular space is conducted backward by means of a leading pipe 15. A sustaining tube 16 is provided between the rear part of the combustion chamber and the boiler shell 1, and an injector 17 is inserted therein, said injector being connected with the said leading pipe 15 and a dry steam pipe 18, the hot air is ejected to the combustion chamber, so that the flames ascending from the flue being supplied with the hot air, perfect combustion is brought about.
The nozzle 19 of the injector is shaped thinner and broader toward its front end, as shown in the drawing, and is made freely turnablc by the provision of a handle 20, so when the combustion chamber and the water-tubes are to be cleaned, the nozzle is turned, and as the turning goes on, the steam is ejected around the sustaining tube in a thin and consequently powerful current, passing in turn through all the spaces in the combustion chamber, whereby the soot adhered to the surfaces of water-tubes shall with a slight inclination,

In this vertical boiler, the flames produced by the combustion of fuel on the grate 5, first, heat the end-plate 3, and next, entering into the combustion chamber 6 through the flue 8 from the central part of the end-plate, mix with the hot air ejecting from the injector 17, and eflecting perfect combustion in the combustion chamber conduct the heat into the water-tubes 7 and then leaving the combustion chamber enter into the chimney 11 through the smoke tube 9.
The water heated at the bottom of the shell ascends alOng the central portion of the shell mainly through the water-tubes 7 while. the cold water descends along the circumference of the shell, thus the circulation of water is promoted. The steam produced accumulates in the steam dome at the upper portion of the shell, while the mud, etc., accumulate in the concave space between the lower part 2 of the shell and the end-plate 3.
According to this invention, as above described, firstly, a broad combustion chamber maybe provided in a vertical boiler shell which is of a limited capacity, so that more water-tubes may be arranged, with the result'that the heating surface is greatly increased; secondly, the water-tubes being arranged near the center of the boiler shell the conduction of heat and the circulation of water are most effective; thirdly, the end-plate being made concave, he furnace may be enlarged in capacity and the inspection of the bottom of the shell is rendered very easy; fourthly,
the combustion of fuel is perfect. In short, the present invention avoiding all the dethe production of steam-is most effective, and the efficiency of boiler is greatly increased.
I claim 1. A vertical cylindrical water tube boiler, shell, a boiler shell having a concave end plate mounted on the furnace shella n'd removably supported and forming an annular space between thecircular wall of the grate and the furnace shell, a broad cylindrical combustion chamber within the boiler shell in a slightly inclined posico p'ies of this patent'may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the tion, a number of vertical water tubes slightly inclined and extending through the upper and lower plates of the combustion chamber and arranged to leave a suitable space in the rear portion thereof and open to the central part of the end plate by an inclined flue, a smoke tube communicating with the front face of the cumbustion chamber and communicating with a chimney, a pipe leading from the annular space and e ecting hot air into the rear space of the combustion chamber by an injector and said injector having a flat turnable nozzle normally held horizontal for supplying a thin and powerful current of hot air uniformly to the flame ascending .from the flue, and adapted to clean the water tubes when turned in a vertical position.

A water-tube boiler comprising a furnace shell, a combustion chamber Within the boiler shell, a number of vertical water tubes extending through the upper and lower plates of the combustion chamber and arranged to leave a suitable space in the rear portion thereof, a pipe leading through the shell and into the rear space of the combustion chamber and ejecting hot air there in, said pipe having a flat turnable nozzle normall held horizontal for supplying, a thin and powerful current of hot air uniformly to the flame and adapted to clean the water tubes when turned in a vertical position. A water tube boiler, comprising a furnace shell, a boiler shell having an annular space adjacent the grate, a combustion chamber within. the boiler shell,a number of vertical water tubes extending through the upper and lower plates of the combustlon chamber and arranged to leave a space at the rear, a pipe leading from the amiular space and ejecting hot air into the rear space of the combustion chamber by an injector and said injector having a flat turnable nozzle normally held horizontal for supplying a thin and powerful current of hot air uniformly to the flame ascending from the flue, and adapted to clean the water tubes when turned in a vertical position.
