Description

APPLICATION Fl SEPT- 13. 1918- 1,313,369. Patented Aug. 19, 1919. 9

SILO.
Application filed September 13, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR A. Coons, citizen of the United States, residing at Patterson, in the parish of St. Marys and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and groove 7 useful Improvements in Silos, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a silo and has particular relation to the form of joint whereby the staves of which the silo is formed are joined together.
The object of the invention is to provide a silo of the character described, which is formed of wooden staves held together by means of surrounding hoops, and whose joints between the staves are formed water tight.
Another object of the invention is to provide a silo of the character described, which may be easily and cheaply erected and whose staves may be readily joined together to form joints which will not leak.
Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which i given in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of the silo constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view, taken through two adjoining staves.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of a section of two staves.
Fig. 4, is a partial side elevation, showing the method of building the silo, waterproof ing' joints and hood construction.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures. the numeral 1, refers to a complete silo, whichis erected upon a suitable foundation 2. This silo is formed of wooden staves, which are set vertically and bound together by means of a plurality of hoops 4, spaced apart around from top to bottom, and a roof 5 completes the silo. Each stave is pro vided with a tongue 6, along one edge and a along the opposite edge, the tongue of each stave fitting in the groove of the ad- Specification of Letters Patent.

joining stave. The adjoining edges of the staves are also provided at their inner sides with triangular grooves 8, extending lengthwise from end to end of the staves, and when the staves are fitted together, these grooves aline, forming a dove-tailed groove which receives a dove-tailed calking strip 9, which, also preferably is formed of wood. This strip breaks the joint between the adjacent edges of the corresponding staves.
This form of silo may be constructed of comparatively short staves, or in other words, the staves may be formed of sections 10, the sections being placed end to end to form a complete stave, as shown in Fig. 4-, and a heavy asphalt paint is placed between the ends of the sections, forming a seal 11. lVhen the silo is set up, a coat 12, of this paint is put on the outside over which is placed a strip of one-ply composition of material 13, approximately four inches wide, around which the hoops 4 pass, thus sealing all joints.
These hoops are built up of a plurality of thin layers of wood nailed on one layer at a time. The first layer being nailed ontothe silo immediately over the material 13, and subsequent layers being nailed thereto until sufficient strength is required to carry the strain.
What I claim is:
A container formed of staves, fitted together, hoops surrounding said staves and securing them in position, each stave being provided with a groove in one edge, a tongue carried by the adjoining edge-of the adjacent st ave and fitted into said groove, the
groove and tongue extending from end to end of said staves, the adjoining edges of the staves being provided with lengthwise alined grooves, extending from end to end of the staves and calking strips fitted into said grooves and breaking the joints between the staves throughout their entire length.
In testimony whereof I have signed my of each joint and a name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
